Abstract
233,568. Smith, A. R. July 25, 1924. Shafts. - In the manufacture of motor-car front axles &c. by upsetting bars at both ends and also at intermediate points, each bar is heated, received successively by a series of dies in which it is upset by punches acting at both ends, then reheated and finished by forging and trimming. The bars o from a supply e are placed in a furnace a with sloping bottom b and hot bars taken from the lower end are fed to the upsetting machine. f, then through a second furnace g and to a forging, trimming, and, if necessary, a final forging press h, i, k. The upsetting machine has three, fixed dies 31, 31<a>, 31<b>, Fig. 4, and three dies 30, 30<a>, 30b carried by slides 28, 29 which are operated by cams 26, 27 on the punch heads S, S<1> so that the dies close as the punches 22, 23, 22<a>, 23<a>, 22<b>, 23<b> advance. The heads are operated by crank discs 8, 18 driven through spur and worm gearing 4, 14 and a clutch 12 from a loose pulley 10. The die-halves have aligning pins 38, Fig. 13, which serve as supports for the bars. The first die has sliding blocks 39 pressed outwardly by spring 41 and provided with recesses 43, 45 so that when acted on by the punches 22, Fig. 14, four enlargements are formed on the bar. The second die has cutters 50, Figs. 16 and 17, which split the enlarged ends, the second punches 22<a>, 23<a> having a wedge shape so that one part 52 of each end is forced aside. The third die and punches 30<b>, 22<b>, Fig. 19, are shaped to produce the rough form 54.
