units 1 ENRIQUE SALAS GONZALES, OF SANTIAGO, CHILE.
TYPEWRITEB. DEVICE.
Application filed April 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENRIQUE SALAS GON- ZALES, a citizen of the Republic of Chile, residing at Santiago, Chile, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for typewriting machines, and more particularly to devices whereby uniform top margins, uniform bottom margins, and substantially uniform right-hand margins may be obtained in addition to the usual left-hand margin on a plurality of similar sheets. Uniform margins are highly desirable since they add greatly to the appearance of the sheet and permit more rapid work by the operator with fewer mistakes and less care and attention.
A feature of this invention is the means for obtaining a uniform bottom margin, said means being also an indicator to enable the operator to tell when the bottom of a sheet is being approached.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device for the above purposes which is simple and easy to construct, which may be readily applied to any ordinary typewriting machine, which is easily detachable, and which is collapsible without detaching it from the machine so as not to interfere with the closing of the typewriter cover.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device having the necessary means for obtaining the uniform margins, and which when once set does not require further adjustment while similar sheets are employed and similar margins are to be obtained.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a typewriting machine.
Fig. 2 is a'side View thereof.
Figs. 3 and 4 are a plan view and side view, respectively, of a modified form.
Figs. 5 and 6 are a plan view and a side view, respectively of a second modified form.
Figs. 7 and 8 are a plan view and a side view, respectively of athird modified form.
Figs. 9 and 10 are a plan view and a side view, respectively of a fourth modified form.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a portion of a typewriting machine having a- Serial No. 460,825.
rear paper-table a, to which is attached a bar 4 by suitable supports or clamps such as 7 which may be spring members catching upon the upper edge of table a, or which may be ordinary catches held to said table by screws. The lower edge of bar 4 is provided with rolled fingers in which is supported a rod 3. A frame 1 is hinged upon said rod 3 by rolled fingers 2 extending downwardly in front of bar 4, so that said frame is free to swing forwardly and rearwardly about rod 3, its rearward movement being limited by said bar 4. The position of the frame 1 may be adjusted by a screw 8 passing through said bar and engaging said frame, whereby rotation of the screw will rotate the frame forwardly or rear- Wardly.
The frame 1 is provided with vertical guides 11 in which operate scales 9 and 10, said scales being held in adjusted position preferably by leaf-springs 11'. The scale 9 may be numbered successively downwardly corresponding to the line spaces in typewriting, while scale 10 is numbered upwardly. When a sheet is inserted around the typewriter platen the bottom edge of the sheet extends upwardly to the rear, and by means of the scale 9 the starting position of the typing may be determined. Thus it may be determined that a suitable top margin can be obtained when the bottom edge of the sheet registers 11 on the scale 9. If the bottom edge of each sheet is brought into register with the number 11 on scaled), then each sheet will have the same top margin. If the bottom of the sheet registers O on scale 9 when the top edge of the sheet is at the printing point, then there will be a top margin of 11 line-spaces if the bottom edge of each new sheet registers 11 on scale 9 for the first line of typing. The scale 9 may be adjusted so that the bottom of the sheet does register 0 when the to edge of the sheet is at the printing point. f a top margin of 11 spaces is decided upon, a stop 12, sliding in a vertical guide 12' similar to guides 11, may be slid to the numeral 11 on scale 9 to indicate the starting position, thus insuring the same top margin on each sheet.
As the typing proceeds the upper edge of the sheet travels upwardly, and by watching scale 10 the number of typed lines may be determined at a glance. If the sheets are similar, and the top margins are the same.
' then the bottom margins will be the same provided the same number of lines are typed on each sheet. To fix the last line of typing, there may be provided a slide 13 operating in vertical guide 12 and which may be set at the desired number of lines to fix the position of the last line and hence of the bottom margin. In this manner uniform top and bottom margins may be obtained.on all the sheets.
To insure uniform. left-hand margins it is essential that the left edge of each sheet be similarly aligned around the platen. For this purpose there are provided left-hand stops 14 adjust-ably slidable in horizontal guides 14' on the frame 1. A similar righthand guide may be provided so that the distance between the guides is the exact width of the sheets. To insure a substantially uniform right-hand margin, there is provided an indicator GeXtending downwardly to the printing line and slidable in the overturned upper end of bar 4. The scales 9 and 10 are calibrated for single line-spacing on one face and for double line-spacing on the other face, said scales being reversible in their guides to bring either face into ef fective position. It is thus possible by the herein-described device to obtain uniform top, bottom, and left margins, and substantially uniform right-hand margins on a plurality of sheets, adding greatly to the appearane of the lat ter and to the speed of the operator. The device when once adjusted for a set of sheets needs no further manipulation. When not in use the frame 1 may be swung forwardly and downwardly on the typewritin machine.
In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, two scales 25 and 26 (similar to 9 in Fig. 1) are provided, one at each side of frame 20, and are joined in the form of a U-member 21. One of said scales (25) indicates single line-spaces while the other (26) indicates double line-s aces, thus avoiding the necessity of reversing the scale. A central scale 27, correspondin to scale 10 in Fig. 1, is provided with sing e line-spaces on one side and double line-spaces on the other. The device is used like that of Fig. 1, only a bottom-margin stop (similar to stop 13 in Fig. 1) being shown. Stop 28 is in the form of a U-member slidable in vertical guides in the frame 20.
The modification in Figs. 5 and 6 provides for a top margin stop or indicator31 (similar to indicator 12 in Fig. 1) and a bottom margin stop or indicator 32 (similar to stop 13 in Fig.1) mounted in a frame 30. Indicator 32 is preferably U-shaped while indicator 31 is a single bar, both operating in vertical guides in frame 30.
The modification in Figs. 7 and 8 shows a top margin indicator 41 and a bottom margin indicator 42, both U-shaped and operating in frame 40. They may be fastened in adjusted position by screws 43.
The modification shown in Figs. 9 and 10 shows instead of frames similar to 1, 20, 30, and 40, a frame in the form of a lazytongs 50 the upper end of which carries an indicator 51 sliding upon a scale 52 which is mounted on a clamp 53 made fast to the paper-table a. The top margin is set by having the bottom edge of the sheet coincide with a definite numeral of the scale at the start, and the indicator 51 may be set to determine the bottom margin by having the top edge of the sheet contact therewith. In this modification the frame 50 may be hingedly connected to the spring clamp as in the other modifications or it may be integral therewith as shown.
