of New York, have invented certain newy and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of whichJthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in typewriting ymachines and more particularly 15.0 means r effecting al quicker and more accurate centralization of lines for headings and the like. Usually this work is done by mentally7 deciding upon a center point. on the carriage scale as a center, say, the number 35 when the entire travel of the carriage is seventy spaces, then counting the number of letters and spaces in the line to be centered, halving the same, deducting the result from 35 and so obtaining on the scale the point where the line comprising the heading is to be started and so on with each subsequent line of the heading.
The main obj ect of my invention, generally stated, is to simplify-"this procedure, obviate the necessity of any appreciable mental calculation, provide a centering indicator and ythus minimize the risk of deviation from the center; relieving the mind ofthe operator of mental strain and facilitate the production of work of the character specified, whether the headinglis to be centered with reference to the work sheet or with reference to a previously written line or lines on the work` sheet and irrespective of the point where said line or lines terminate.
A further object of my invention is to provide simple and` eicient means for readily centering a work sheet 'with reference to the platen.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in lthe features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out. in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the various views, Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of the upper portion of one form of typewriting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail front view with parts in section of the auxiliary centering scale'at the front of the machine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail fragmentary perspective View showing the right-hand end of the centering scale illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail front view of the work sheet centering scale tof gether with the side edge gage carried thereby. F ig. 5 is an end viewof the parts shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a vertical, front to rear, sectional view of the upper portion of a machine with the devices of my invention embodied therein. Fig. 7 is a representat-ion of a work sheet with one form of. headlng inscribed with the aid of my invention. I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a No. 10 Remington .machina although it should be understood that the' invention ma be embodied in various styles of typewritmg machines.

openings in the platen frame l0, mounted for vertical case shifting movement on parallel links 11 and supported by a shift rail 12. Rearwardly extending arms 13 of the platen frame support a cross bar 14 on which a paper table 15 is supported in the usual manner. Some of the parts of the machine are omitted. It should be understood, however, that the paper is introduced into the machine in the usual manner from the rear of the platen into the bight or throat between the main paper feed rollers 16 (indicated in dotted lines vin Fig. 6) and the Patented Apr. 22, 1913.

This centering scale plate is supported inde'- pendently just below the lower end of the paper table and between the paper table and theplaten in Such position that the work sheet, as it is introduced into the machine, may coperate with the indices on the work sheet centering scale. From an inspection rof Fig. 4 it will be-seen that the scale plate 2C is provided with the usual index marks 21 arranged a letter space distanceapart and,
corresponding in this respect to the usual carriage scale. Numerical indices 22 are likewise provided upon the scale plate 2 0. These numerical indices, however, begin at the outer ends of the scale plate and progress to the center thereof. It will be 'observed that in the present instance the numerical indices extend from 0 at each end of the scale bar to the center thereof which is indicated at 45. This point 45 indicates the center of the platen and the scale marks extend on each side thereof throughout the length vof the platen in order that the side edges of the work sheet may coperate with the indices near each end of the scale plate, depending on the width of the work sheet. I preferably provide a sheet metalsupporting member 23 which partly surrounds the scale plate 20 and has projecting forwardly therefrom an extension or finger 24 which extends at right angles to the axis of the platen and constitutes a side edge gage for4 the paper. I have shown but one of these side edge gages but it will be understood that two of them may be employed, one near each end ofthe scale plate' 20. The support 23 for the side edge gage loosely surrounds thescale plate 20 so as to enable the support,
with the side edge gage 24 formed thereon, to be adjusted longitudinally of the scale plate; there being sufficient friction between the support or carrier 23 and the scale plate to maintain the support and side edge gage in the position to which they may be adjusted. It will be understood that the work sheet centering scale enables the operator to properly center the plate with reference to the platen as the work sheet is introduced into the machine. If, for instance, the width of the paper corresponds to sixty spaces on the scale plate 20, each side edge of the sheet shouid register with'the numerical index 15 at the associated end of the scale plate 20 and the sheet will be prop-y erly positioned centrally of the platen and the gage 24 may be set accordingly. If subsequent sheets are of, the same width the side edge gage will enable all of the sheets to be readily inserted and properly centered Without consulting the scale 20.
Upon referring to Fig. 6 it will be observed that a fixed pointer 25 is secured by a screw 26 to a bracket plate 27 which in turn is fixed to the forward fixed guide rod 3 by screws 2'?a (Fig. 1) the pointer being thus maintained fixed at the center ofthe machine and extending. upwardly and then forwardly to coperate with a carriage scale 28 secured to the front cross bar -5 of the carriage. The carriage scale 28 is of the usual character with letter space index marks 29 `and numerical indices 3() thereon.` In the present instance these numerical indices progress from left to right be ning at 0 and terminating at it llri-ningassumed that in the present instance the carriage has a complete travel of seventy-six letter spaces.

Upon referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the scale 33 on the opposite side of the multiplex scale-bearing plate has its indicating marks 35 arranged like the scale 32 and like the carriage scale 28|. The numerical indices 0 to 70, however, progress in the opposite direction `from the numerical indices on the scale 32 and in an opposite'direetion from those on the carriage'scale and are spaced apart like the numerical indices on the scale 32. Preferably the numericalindices on the scale 32 are in black whereas those on the scale 33 are preferably in a distinctive color, as red,for instance. It will be seen7 moreover, that the scales 32 and 33 correspond to about one-half of the length of the carriage scaleand the space between each 'adjacent set of index marks is therefore twice 'the value as will hereinafter more clearly appear. In short, a letter space movement of the carriage corresponding to a movnent of .the mrriage scale from one letterspa'ce index mark to the next will be represented as twice the value or two letter spaces on either of the scaies 32 and 33. The scale bearing plate 31 is mounted on the frame of the machine so that it may be turned to expose either .of the scales 32 or 33 to the operator, or to maintain the scale bearing plate presented edgewise to the operator, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, so as to throw the centering scale out of use in order to avoid confusion. Thus, it will be seen that the left-hand end of the scale beari plate 31.is provided. with a knurled he 36 by which the scale bearing plate may be turned. One end of the plate is apertured at 37 to receive a sup orting pivot pin 38 riveted to a supporting racket 39, secured to the forward fixed guide rod 3 of the machine. An expansion spring 40 is received in the aperture in the plate 31 and tends to force the plate longitudinallv to the right. The right-hand end of the plate 31 has shoulders 41 formed thereon to limit the movement of the plate to the right, said shoulders bearing against a bracket arm 42 carried by the bracket 27. A rectangular` engaging portion 43 is formed near the right-hand end .of the plate 31 and this rectangular bearing portion is adapted to be received in a corresponding bearing opening in the bracket arm 42, so as to hold the scale plate against rotative movement in any one of three different positions. In one of these positions the sca1et32 may be exposed to the operator, as ,shown in Fig. 1; in another position the scale 33, at the opposite side of the scale plate, may exposedto the operator as indicated in Fig. 2; or the. scale plate may be supported in a third'position, presenting it edgewise to the operator, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, so that neither of the scales 32 or 33 is presented to the View of the operator. Extending to the right of the rectangular bearing ortion 43 on the scale plate is a cylindrlca bearing or pivot portion 44 which supports the scale plate in the bearing opening in the bracket arm 42 when the scale plate is shifted longitudinally to the left againstthe pressure of the spring 40, to disen age the rectangular bearing portion from t e bearing opening in the bracket arm 42. When such longitudinal movement of the scale plate has been edected it is free to be rotated to bring either of the scales 32 or 33 to the view of the operator or to present it edgewiseto the operator as hereinbeore described.
A left-hand end plate 45 on the front cross bar 5 of the carriage is extended forwardly at 46 to form a pointer or indicator which Acoperates with either of the scales 32 or 33 on the multiple sca-le bearing plate 31. This point-er is indicated in Fig. 1 and is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6. The
pointer 46 being carried by the carriage at the f ront of the machine and the auxiliary multiplex-scale bearing-plate 31 being carried by the frame of the machine at the front Vtimes readily observed by the operator.
The devices are used somewhat differently, depending on the nature of the work to be produced or the character of the heading to be inscribed. Assuming that a heading such as that indicated at a in Fig. 7 is to be inscribed, so that it shall be properly centered wit-h reference to the sheet b, the work sheet is first inserted and centered with reference to the platen by the work sheet centering-scale 20 in the manner hereinbefore indicated. The scale bearing member 31 is then adjusted so as to present the black scale 32 to the operator, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The number of characters and spaces in the first line of the heading to be inscribed is then counted. Thus it will be found that the line containing the words John Does in the heading a contains ten characters and spaces. The carriage is then moved until the pointer 46 is at 10 on the auxiliary scale. The heading `may then be printed and it will be found to be properly centered on the sheet; the heading beginning at the index mark indicated at thirty-three in the carriage scale and ending at theindex mark indicating the point forty-three. Ten spaces occupied by the heading added to thirtythree spaces to the left of the heading and thirty-three spaces to the right of the heading makes a total of seventy-six spaces, corresponding to the entire travel of the carJ riage.
In the second line of the heading a which includes the words School of instruction there are twenty-two characters and spaces. The carriage is moved until the pointer 46 registers wlth the index mark indicating the osition twenty-two on the auxiliary centering-scale 32. The line is then written and will be commenced at the index on the carriage scale corresponding to the point twenty- It will be found that there will be twenty-seven spaces on either side of the written line and this added to twenty-two spaces occupied by the heading School ot often desirable to place a heading, or to add iid liti
a short line. either above or below a previously written line and to properly center the heading with reference to the previously written line, irrespective of the point where the latter terminates. An example of this is illustrated in Fig. 8. In Writing headings of this character, the Work sheet centering scale 20 may be ignored. In writing an offset. heading such as that shown in Fig. S the Work sheet is inserted in the machine with the left-hand margin thereof at the extreme left-hand of the platen. The auxiliary multiplex-scale bearing-member 3l is then rotatively adjusted to bring the red scale 33 to the view of the operator, as shown in Fig. 2. This scale is of less length than the carriage scale and its graduations have double the value of those of the carriage scale and said graduations diminish in numerical value as the carriage is moved toward the right, said scale indicating zero when the carriage is in its extreme riffhthand position and indicating its higliest number when the carriage is at the middle of its run. The previously Writ-ten line, `which may be assumed to be the line c in Fig. 8, begins at 0 on the carriage scale and terminates at 40 in the example shown. If the operator desires to place the words Experienced instructors beneath the line c and to properly center the added words with reference to the previously7 Written line,g
it is merely necessary to count the,number of characters and spaces for the added heading Experienced instructors. This will be found to occupy twenty-four spaces. `Deduct twenty-four from forty, which is the number of spaces required for the previous] y Written line, and this Will leave sixteen spaces. The carriage may then be moved until the indicator 46 registers with the index mark which indicates sixteen on the scale 33. The operator may then proceedto Write the line d Experienced instructors and it will be properly centered with reference to the previously Written line, although the latter is olf-set with reference to the sheet b, as indicated in Fig. 8. In short, it is merely necessary, in order to arrive at a proper centering of one line With reference to another, to deduct the number of spaces occupied by the added line from the number ofspaces contained in the previously Written line and then set the pointer 4:6 on an index mark on the scale 32 which corresponds to the remainder after the deduction referred to above has been made. This will afford a positioning of the carriage to properly center the added line.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have provided simple and etlicient devices for centering a heading with reference to a sheet or for centering a heading or added line with reference to a previously Written line irrespective of the point at which the previously Written line terminates.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
IVhat- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a. carriage, means for Vaiding in positioning the carriage to center the Work to be produced with reference to the sheet, and means for aiding in positioning the carriage to center the Work to be produced With reference to an off-set line Written on theV dices on different scales progressing in oppo-A site directions and each set of numerical indices having double the value of those .of the ordinary carriage scale, and means for enabling either one or another of the scales to be presented for use.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, an auxiliary multiplex centeringscale bearing member having corresponding scale marks and numerical indices on different sides thereof, the numerical indices on the different scales however progressing in opposite directions and each set of numerical indices having double the value of those of the ordinary carriage scale, an indicating device cooperative with said scales, means for effecting a relative movement between said indicating device andl the multiplex scale bearing member during the travel of the carriage, and means for bringing any scale of the scale bearing member into co` operation With said indicating device.
5. In a typevvriting machine, the/combination of a carriage, arotativeplaten carried thereby, an auxiliary multiplex centering-scale bearing member having corresponding scale marks and numerical indices on different sides thereof, the numerical indices on the different scales however progressing in opposite directions, an indicating device cooperative With said scales, means for effecting a relative movement between said indicating device and the scale bearing member during the travel of the carriage, means for bringing any scale of the A ing any scale of the scale n machine and mounted for pof the platen,

In a typewriting machine, thecombination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, an auxiliary multiplex centeringscale bearing member having corresponding scale marks and numerical indices on different sides thereof, the numerical indices on the different scales progressing in opposite directions, an indicating device coperat-ive with said scales, means for eecting a relative movement between said indicating device and the scale bearing member during the travel of the carriage, means for bringbearing member into coperation with said indicating device, and an additional centering scale coperative with the .work sheet for centering the work sheet with reference to the platen, said last mentioned scale having corresponding numerical indices at opposite sides thereof, said indices progressing from the ends toward the center of the scale.' i
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, a paper table arranged in the rear of the platen, and a centering-scale supported between the paper table and the platen and cooperative with a work sheet as 1t is introduced intoy the machine, said centering scale having the numerals applied thereto progressing in opposite directions in the halves of said sca-1e.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, and a centering-scale carried by the carriage and coperative'with the work sheet as it is introduced intothe machine, said centering scale having correspondin numerical indices at opposite ends thereo said indices progressing in opposite directions in the halves of the scale. i

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, a paper table arranged in the rear and a centering-scale interposed between the paper table and the platen and'coperative with a work sheet as it is introduced into the machine, said centering scale having corresponding numerical indices at opposite ends thereof, said indices progressing in' opposite directions in the halves of the scale. v
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carria e, a :trame of the machine, an auxiliary multiplex centering-scale bearing member carried by the frame of the turning move` ment thereon, duplicate scale marks and numei-ical indices on opposite sides of said scale, the numerical indices progressing in .nation of ay carriage,
opposite directions, and an indicator carried by the carriage.and coperative with the indices on one side or another of the scale bearing member according to the rotative adjustment of the latter.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a carriage scale having letter spacescale marks and numerical indices, two auxiliary centering scales each substantially half the length of the carriage scale and the numerical indices on said auxiliary scales progressing in opposite directions, an indicator for coperation with the auxiliary scales, and means for bringing either one of said auxiliary scales into cooperation with said indicator.
12. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, an auxiliary scale plate having centering-scales on opposite sides thereof, means whereby said plate ma be rotatively adjusted to present either ofy the scales von opposite sides thereof to the operator, or the edge of the scale plate may be presented'to the operator to throw the auxiliaryscales out of use, and an indicator cooperative with either of the scales on opposite sides of the scale plate.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combia carriage scale, an auxiliary scale bar or plate having corresponding scales on oppositel sides thereof each of double the letter space value of the carriage scale and substantially one half4 the length of the carriage scale, means whereby the scale plate or bar may be rotatively adjusted to present thescale thereof to the operator, operative with the scale on either side of the auxiliary scale plate or bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, a paper table arranged in the rear of the platen, `a centering-scale'supported between the paper table and the platen and coperative with a work sheet as it is introduced into the machine, and a side edge gage adjustable relatively to said scale and with which a side edge of a work sheet is adapted to coperate.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a centering-scale carried by the carriage and coperative with the work sheet as it is introduced into the machine, said centering-scale having corresponding numerical indices at opposite ends thereof, said in.-A
