W. HAMER STEAM GENERATOR Filed may 19. 191s Patented Mar. i8, 11924;,

WILL KAMER, 0F ELTON, BUBY, ENGLAND.
STEAM GENERATOR.
Application iled May 19, 1919. Serial No. 298,055.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAMER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Elton, Bury, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Connected with Steam Generators, of which the following is a specification.
VThis invention relates'to steam generators of the Lancashire, Cornish and like types, having external side iiues. Y y `The brickwork which closes the front ends of the side flues of steam generators of the types referred to is carried up beyond the transverse or horizontal centre line of the boiler or boilers, and the inability of the brickwork to follow the expansion and contraction of the boiler or boilers frequently leads to disturbance thereof with leakage of cold air into the flues and loss of heat, and, in many cases, to bulging vand eventual cracking of the brickwork. The object of the present invention is to provide a yielding joint between the shell of a boiler and the brickwork at the front end thereof which will readily give to and follow the expansion and contraction ofthe boiler and so prevent any disturb-ance of the b-rickwork, or leakage of cold air and loss of heat.
Accordin to this invention, I provide at each side of the front end of the boiler one or more joint-members shaped to lit the 'shell of the boiler and pressed thereagainst by a spring or springs against and under the action of which they are yfree to yield to,
and follow, the expansion and contractionl of the boiler shell. Asbestos rope or other appropriate incombustible packing may be arranged between the jointfmembers and the Vboiler shell and the former may be arched, grooved or similarly formed to receive the packing. Y
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. l is a transverse section of a` Lancashire boiler i1-` lustrating one embodiment of the invention,
the section of the left hand half of Figure.
l being ltaken through the side flue and the section of the right hand half being taken through the front wall of the setting, and
Fig. 2 is a part section to a larger scale on` the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevationv illustrating another embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a part section to a larger scale on the line 4 4: in Fig. 3. Fig. '5 is an elevation partly in vertical section of a modified form of joint-member. Referring first to Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing, a is the boiler shell and b the brickwork setting of same. c, 0 are the internal flues of the boiler, d, al the external bottom ues into which at the rear end of the boiler the internal iues c, c lead, e, e the external side lues into which the bottom flues d, d open by passages f, f at the front end of the boiler and which lead to the `chimney Hue at the rear end of the boiler in the usual way, and g, g are the blocks ting b, by the expansion and contraction of the shell, cold'air-leaks between the boiler shell and the front wall into the side flues e, e between the level of the supporting blocks g, g and the top of the side ues. v
In order to prevent the aforesaid leakage of cold air into the side iiues e, e, I provide at each side of the front end of the boiler shell a, a joint-member h having its face h1 next to the shell, shaped to the external contour thereof, and of sufEcient height to extend from below the bottom e of the side flue e to above the top e2 thereof. Preferably, thel joint members 7L extend to the cover-flags j of the setting b. The joint-members h are formed with tail portions h2 which are mounted to slide in one channel of double-channel guide-members 7c of -section in plan. rIhe joint membersl are pressed against the shell a by springs m which are' arranged between the tail portions h2 and the webs k1 of the guidemembersla. The springs m are positioned by. being mounted on set screws n the stems of which pass freely through the holes k2 in the webs 7x1' and are screwed into the tail portions h2. The faces tlof the joint-members 7L are preferably grooved or arched, as illustrated, orequivalently 4formed to receive asbestos rope or other appropriate incombustible packing o to make an air-tight joint between the'joint-members it and the shell a and thebrickwork behind the joint-members.
The j oint-members It and the guide memn lll ' yielding .packing q to prevent cold air Jfrom finding its way through the channels past the joint members and into the side llues.
The springs m while pressing the jointmembers k against the boiler shell allow the members to yield to and Jfollow the movements of the shell under expansion and contraction. As the joint members always maintain air-tight joints between the boiler shell and the -front wall of the setting, the front wall need not be in actual contact with the shell-between the top and bottom of the side lues, thusy avoiding any possibility of disturbance of the'wallb-y the expansion and contraction of the shell.
If desired, and as illustrated in Fig. 5, the joint members h may be made in a plurality of sections ha. l
Leakage of cold air into the upper part of the side lues between the top of the fines and the cover-flags j, may be prevented by the means described in my British Patent No. 10,5829.
- -What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is ,li In steam generators having external lues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the front of the setting to preventleakage of cold air therebetween into the side flues, comprising movable joint-members mounted between the front wall of the setting vand the shell and means for pressing said jointmembers against the shell so that they yield to and follow the movements thereof under expansion and contraction.
2. In steam generators having external lues in asetting, means Jfor maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the front of the setting to prevent leakage of cold air therebetween into thepside ues, comprising movablejoint-members mounted between the front wall ot the setting and the shell, and a :spring adapted to press said joint-members against the shell so that they yield to and follow the Amovements thereof under expansion and contraction.
3. In steam generators having external lues in a setting, means for maintainingan air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the front o'the setting tov prevent leakage of cold air therebetween into the'side flues,
comprising guiclemembersv of channel seetion mounted in the front wall of the setting at either side of the boiler, joint-members slidably mounted in said guide-members, springs mounted between said guide and joint members and adapted to press the joint members against the boiler shell so that they yield to and 'follow the movements thereof under expansion and contraction.
4. In steam generators having external flues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the setting, comprising a movable jointmember bearing against the shell and adapted to yield to and follow the movements thereof under expansion and contraction, and incombustible packing arranged between said joint-member and the shell.
5. In steam generators having external lues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the setting, comprising a movable jointmember, means for pressing said j oint-member against theshell so that it is free to yield to and ollowthe movements of the shell under expansion and contraction, and incombustible packing arranged between said joint-member and the shell.
6. In steam generators having external tlues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the front of the setting to prevent leakage of cold air therebetween into the side flues,
comprising movable joint-members mounted Y between the Jfront wall of the setting and the sides of the shell to bear against the latter and to yield to and follow the movements thereof under expansion and contraction, and incombustible packing arranged between said joint-members and the shell.
7. In steam generators having external flues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the front of the setting to prevent leakage of cold air therebetween into the side lues, comprising guide-members of channel seetion mounted in the Jfront wall ot the setting at either side of the boiler, joint-members slidably mounted in said guide-members, springs mounted between said guide and joint members and adapted to press the joint-members against the boiler shell so that they yield to and follow the movements thereof underY expansion and contraction, and incombustible packing arranged between said joint-members and the shell.
V8. In steam generators having external iues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the setting, comprising a movable segmental joint-member, means for pressing said jointmember against the shell so that it yields to and follows the Vmovements thereof under expansion and contraction, and incombustible, packing arranged between thel shell and the joint-member. i
9. In steam generators having external lues in a setting, means for maintaining an air-tight joint between the boiler shell and the setting, comprising movable segmen- 5 tal joint-members, means for pressing said joint-members against the shell so that they yield to and follow the movements thereof under expansion and contraction, inoombus tible packing arranged between said jointmembers and the shell, and means for guiding said joint-members in their movements.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM HAMER.
