Be it known that l, FRITZ l/Lii'fnu, citizen of Germany, residing` at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Continuous Kilns (for whichl have tiled applications in Germany filed September 7, 1915, Patent No. 328,985, and France tiled July 20, 1920), ot which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates toV improvements in continuous kilns for burning tile, brick and other earthenware articles, and has tor its object to provide means for utilizing the heat of the burning chambers oi:l such kilns for heating the drying chambers ordinarily employed in connection therewith.
lith this object in view there are formed in the upper wall ot the kiln passages connected by suitable openings with the burning chambers of the kiln and in which are located water pipes adapted to be connected to the piping in the drying chambers employed in connection with such kilns, so that a circulation ci water is maintained therethrough and the necessary heat supplied to these chambers.
In order to prevent the hot gases passing through the passages from a chamber of the kiln which is at a high temperature to a chamber of a lower temperature, the pase sages are divided by partitions into compartments corresponding in length with the burning chambers ot' the kiln.
It has heretofore been proposed to embed such water pipes in the upper walls of the kiln, but in such a construction there is utilized only the heat radiated from the brick work and the entire available heat ot' the hot gases of the burning chambers is not utilized.

Yconnected to a central smoke flue which leads to a discharge stack, (not shown). The tunnel is divided into burning chambers by temporary partitions, which may be ol paper which is burned away as the .tiring progresses. Charging ducts, z', extend through the upper wall ot the kiln, through which the Jfuel is introduced into the kiln tunnel, and are provided with the customary closures.
In the upper wall of the kiln are located passages, d, extending throughout the length of the kiln and in open communication with the burning chambers thereof. These passages are divided by partitions, 7L, into compartments corresponding in length with the burning chambers. In these passages, ci, are placed water pipes, a, which are so connected to the piping of the drying chambers as to provide for a circulation or" water therethrough` the pipes, a, in connection with the piping with the drying chambers forming a hot water heating system for these chambers.
In the form shown in Figures 1,' 2 and 3, the passages, (Z, are located directly over the kiln tunnel and are in open communication therewith through openings e, formed in the roof of the tunnel.
In the form shown in Figures 4, 5 and G, the passages, CZ, are located directly over the kiln tunnel and the charging ducts, z', are utilized to connect these passages to the burning chambers, openings, c', being -formed in the side walls of the passages and connecting the ducts, c', thereto.
In the form shown in Figures 7, S and 9, the passages, al, are located centrally ot the kiln directly over the smoke iiue. These passages are separated by a partition wall, 7c, and each passage is connected to the burning chambers of the kiln byl cross passages, f, extending from each passage over the kiln tunnel and connected to the charging ducts, z', by passages e.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is: Y

A continuous kiln having a passage located in the upper wall thereof, openings in said wall lconnecting said passage with the burning chambers oi' the kiln, partitions in said passage dividing it into compartments corresponding in length Ato the length of the burning chambers ot' the kiln and water pipes in said passage adapted to be connected to the piping in a drying chamber.
2. A continuous kiln having passages in the upper wall thereof, openings in said wall connecting the said passages with the burning chambers of the kiln, partitions in said passages dividing them into compartments corresponding in length to the length of the burning chambers of the kiln Vand water pipes in said passages adapted to be connected to the piping in a .drying chamber.
3. A continuousv kiln having a passage formed in the upper wall thereof7 charging ducts passing through said wall and into the burning chambers of' the kiln, connections between said charging ducts and said passage, partitions in said passage dividing it into compartments corresponding in length to the length of the burning chambers oiipsaid kiln and water pipes in said passage adapted to be connected to the piping in a drying chamber. v
