GRATE HANGER FOR FURNACES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. WYMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate Hangers for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furnace construction, and especially to those parts of the furnace which have to do with supporting the grate or grates in position.
Furnaces as heretofore constructed have possessed many disadvantages, among which may be mentioned the disarrangement and trouble caused by such parts, in connection with the grate construction, as cogv Wheels, bolts, nuts and other parts, being easy to get out of order. In the present invention I have overcome such objections by eliminating such parts as cog Wheels, bolts, nuts, and the like, and have greatly simplified the grate construction, as will hereinafter be more fully appreciated.
Among the objects of my invention are to make possible the removal of any of the rate bars singly without disturbing the fire; to provide means for permitting quick and easy removal and replacementof any or all of the grate parts; to eliminate parts having a tendency to get out of order, such as cog wheels, bolts, nuts, and the like, in grate and grate hanger construction; to provide novel means for preventing accidental displacement of the grate bar supporting bearing, but at the same time permitting the ready removal of the same when desired; to so arrange the parts for locking the grate bar outer hearings in position as to permit removal of the same Without injury to the operator by burning or coming into contact with highly heated parts of the furnace; to provide more simple, economical, efficacious and accessible gratehanger parts than heretofore known; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear.
My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, I desire the same to be 1921. Serial No. 470,990.

In the drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the lower portionof a furnace and the base portion or ash pit thereof, showing a grate bar in side View.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly Fig. 1, the fire pot of the furnace is designated generally at 1, the base portion or ash pit member at 2, and the grate generally at 3. The bars of the grate 3 are mounted at their inner ends in bearings 4, suitably formed upon or secured to the base member 2, and at their opposite ends are provided with the extending shafts 5, formed at their ends 6, non-circular in cross section, to receive the shaking lever. Spaced from bearings 4 a distance slightly greater than the fire supporting length of the grate, is cross bar 7 provided with a series of openings 8 of such shape as to provide opposed. ledges 9 unobstructed at their front side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and provided at their rear side, with upstanding fianges 10, seen more clearly in Fig. 3. The openings 8 are thus of such shape as to receive bearing members 11 (see Fig. 8). The members 11 comprise projecting sides 12 resting upon ledges 9, cutaway portions 13 fitting over shoulders 14 of g. 8 is a perspective view of the removflanges 10, to permit the inner faces 15 of i these bearing members to come approximately flush with the inner face 15 of cross bar 7, and their outer faces 16 being substantially flush with the front face 17 of the cross bar.
The front portion of ash pit member 2, adjacent cross bar 7 is formed with a pair of longitudinally spaced depressions or channels 18, to receive locking plates 19 in such manner as to bring their tops substantially flush with the top of the ash pit member. These locking plates 19, as shown in Fig. 7, have depending fingers 20 passing downwardly through apertures 21 provided in ash pit member 2 so that when looking plates 19 are in place, fingers 20 will be positioned close to and in front of projecting sides 12 of bearing members 11, to prevent their displacement from openings 8, it being understood that the shaft extensions 5 of grate bars shall have been positioned in slots 22 of the bearing members, to be sup ported thereby. Suitable apertures are provided in looking plate 19 and the top of the ash pit member 2, to receive any suitable locking means, such as cotter keys, bolts or the like, as indicated at 23, in Fig. 2, for securing this plate in position, but permitting its removal when desired. The removal of locking plates 19 will withdraw fingers 20 from in front of projections 12 of bearings 11. This permits the removal of the grate Without danger of burning of ones self orcoming in contact with the highly heated parts, of the furnace.
Having now described my invention, I claim 1. In a furnace construction having a base and a gratemember, a support for each end of said grate member, the support at one end of the grate member having a removable supporting member for supporting said end of the grate member, a lock member located exteriorly of the base and having parts thereof extending within said base and cooperating with said supporting member for normally holding the same against displacement,

In a furnace construction having a base portion, grate members therein, bearings for the respective ends of the members, and means outside the base portion and e:-;t\,.nding therein, for holding the bearings at one end of the grate members in operative position, said means being removable from the exterior of the base portion for permitting removal of the bearings at the latter on d of the grate members and the dismounting of any one of the grate members.
3. In furnace construction having a base member, a bearing thereon for rotatably receiving one end of a grate member, a bearing support, asecond bearing for rotatably receiving the other end of the grate member and. being slidably mounted in the support, a keeper on said base member and having means guarding against displacement of the second bearing in the support, said keeper being removable from the exterior of the base member.

In furnace construction having a base member, a bearing thereon for rotatably receiving one end of a grate member, a bear ing support, a second bearing for rotatably receiving the other end of the grate member and being slidably mounted in the support, a keeper on said base member and having a projecting part extending through the upper portion of he base member to a position adjacent said second bearing for nor mally holding the second bearing against displacement and being removable for permitting the dismounting of the grate member. 5. In furnace construction having a base member, a bearing thereon for rotatably receiving one end of a grate member, a bearing support, a second bearing for rotatably receiving the other end of the grate member and being slidably mounted in the support, a keeper on said base member and having a projecting part extending through the upper portion of he base member to a position adjacent said secondbearing for normally holding the second bearing against displacement and being removable for the dismounting of the grate member, and means for normally securing the keeper in place on said base member. 7
6. In furnace construction, a base portion, a cross bar at the upper portion thereof, said bar being provided with an opening and a pair of opposed ledges at said opening, a bearing member having side portions removably seated on said ledges, a plate having fingers projecting through apertures in said base portion andv extending adjacent to the side portions of the bearing member to prevent displacement; thereof.
7. In furnace construction, a base portion having grate bar bearings at one side thereof, a cross bar carried by said base portion and being provided with openings respectively opposite said bearings, said bar having opposed ledges at said opening, bearing members removably seated on said ledges in said openings, a plate carried by said base portion and having laterally extending fingers adjacent said bearing memhere for preventing displacement thereof. 8. In furnace construction, a base portion having grate bar bearings at one side thereof, a cross bar carried by said base portion and being provided with openings respectively opposite said bearings, said bar having opposed ledges at said openings, remov able bearing members located in said openings and having projecting side portions "seated on said ledges, a plate carried by said Min base portion and having depending fingers adjacent said bearing members for preventing displacement thereof.
9. In furnace construction, a base portion having grate bar bearings at one side thereof and apertures in the top thereof, a cross bar carried by said top near said apertures and being provided with openings respectively opposite said bearings, said bar having opposed ledges at said openings, bearing members removably seated on said ledges and in said openings, a plate on said top and having projections extending through said apertures adjacent said bearing members for preventing displacement of said bearing members.
10. In furnace construction, a base portion having grate bar bearings at one side thereof and apertures in the top thereof, a cross bar carried by said top near said apertures and being provided with openings respectively opposite said bearings, said bar having opposed ledges at said openings, removable bearing members located in said openings and having projecting side portions seated on said ledges, a plate on said top and having projections extending through said apertures adjacent said bearing members for holding said bearing members in place on'said ledges.
11. In furnace construction, a base portion having grate bar bearings at one side thereof, a cross bar carried by said base portion and being provided with openings respectively opposite said bearings, said bar having opposed ledges and side lugs at said openings, bearing members removably, seated on said ledges and against said lugs,
a plate carried by said base portion and having fingers adjacent said bearing members opposite from said lugs and normally holding said bearing members in place on said ledges.
12. In furnace construction comprising a base portion having rear and top walls, a series of grate bar bearings on said rear wall, a cross bar carried by said top Wall and being provided with a series of openings alined with said bearings, removable bearing members connected to said bar in the openings thereof, and means for looking the bearing members in place and from displacement, said means being carried by said top Wall and being accessible from the exterior of said base member.
