PANTRY RECEPTACLE.
Application led November 13', 1922. 'Seria1No- @00,6%2.
To all whom t may-concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada,res1d1ng at North Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantry Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to a pantryv receptacle of that class used for the reception of articles which it .mayl be necessary to have easy of access without the container forming an obstruction to the ready use of a; shelf orV table.
The device comprises lthe manner .ofsup-r porting the box beneath the shelf ortable to maintain thesame closed whennotA required, and to be movable outward therefrom to a sufficientV extent to afford access.Y
. tion.
Fig. 2 is a similar viewy showing one of the receptacles as opened for use.
Fig. 3, a similar view showing the other receptacle as opened, and
Fig. L1 shows the removable hinge connection of the receptacle. Y
In these drawings 2 represents the wall, and 3' a shelf supported thereagainst. A rectangular box 4 is hinged at 7 alongv the back edge of the bottom to therwall 2Y immediately below the shelf' 3; Along the edge of the open end of the box t a cover 5 is hinged at 6' to the same side. v
Angular movement outward of this-box 4; from the wall is limited by a chain 8 connected between the back of thel box andthe wall, and the cover 5 is connected by a light chain 9 to the underside'ofthe shelf 3;
The box 4 is retained in its upright position beneath the shelf 3 by a latch member 10 of' thin resilient metal secured to theV front face of the box and projecting outf ward therefrom, thc outerV endv of which member is turned down, as at 11, to' engage a bead 12A downwardly projecting from the outer edge of the shelf 2 and a short distance beneath that bead is outwardly produced, asi at 13, to form a-inger engagement byV which it: may be raisedr or lowered.
The box 4L: will thus be allowed to tilt forward to the limit of the chain 8, yas shown in Fig. 3, by pushing down the linger engagement V13 of the latch to release it'from its engagement with the bead'V 12, and simultaneously thecover or lid 5 of the box -will be openedfby the check imposed by the chain 9.k Thereafter the box may be moved to its upright position when the cover 5 will close' and the latch 10 will spring upward behind the bead 12 and retain the box i in the up-r right position.
A relatively smaller similarbox 15-` is hinged at 16 along its lower edge to the lower edge of the front face *ofy the box 1. This box is also provided with a chain 17 checkingr its outward movement atl the required limit clear of the shelf, (see Fig. 2), and is provided with a cover 18 hinged at 19 to the back edge of the box with a chain 20 from the cover to the latch member r10.
This box 15 is retained in its upright position against the box t, as shown in- Fig, 1, by the downwardly turned portion 11 of the latch member 10, and; may be released'` from suoliy engagement; lay-lifting the front end 13 of the member 10.l The box will then fall outward to the limit imposed: by the chain 17 and its cover 18 is simultaneously opened-by the chain 20.
As before, the Vbox ymay be moved back to its upright position andV the spring latch member 10 will retain it in that position, see Fig. 1. ,Y
Either singly or doubly, as shown in the drawings, the device forms-'a convenient receptacle in relation to a shelf' or table oc'- cupying space otherwise not usable and leavingy the shelf or table unencumberedfor other purposes, while the receptacles are dust-proof andv readilyY accessible.
' To'enable the boxes 4 or 15l to be readily removable forpurposes of cleansing, the hinges 7 and 16 are preferably made as shownin Fig. 1l, the pin of the hinge fitting M an` openf bearing secured to thewall 3' or thefo'uterface ofthe other boxfi. y v
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what' IV claim as new and desire to Vbe protectedin hy'ILetl ters Patent, is i side of the shelf, a cover hinged to the open Yedge of the box along the same side as the hinge, means for retaining the box in its upright position beneath the shelf, and means limiting outward movement of the box on its hinge.
2. A pantry receptacle of the class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinged along its lower edge with its open end in proximity to the underside of the shelf, a cover hinged to the open edge of the box along the same side as the hinge, means for retaining the box in its upright position beneath the shelf, means limiting outward movement of the box on its hinge, andV means for connecting the hinge cover intermediate its hinge and its free edge to the underside of the shelf whereby when the box is tilted outward from beneath the shelf the cover is lifted.
3. A pantry receptacle of the class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinged along its lower edge with its open end in proximity to the underside of the shelf, a cover hinged along the open edge of the box on the same side as the hinge, a resilient member secured to the front side of the box adjacent its upper end and adapted to engage a bead downwardly projecting from the front edge of the shelf to retain the box in the upright position, means limiting angular movement of the box outward on its hinge, and means connecting the cover of the box to the underside of the shelf whereby when the box isV angularly tilted forward beyond the front edge of the shelf the cover will be lifted to afford access to the box.
Il. A device of the class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinge-connected along its lower edge to a support, a cover hinged along the open end of the same side, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edge ofthe aforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, releasable means for retaining the boxes in a substantially upright position, and means for limitn ing angular movement of the boxes outward on their hinges from the upright position.
5. A device of the class described, coinprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinge-connected along its lower edge to a support, a cover hinged along the open end of the same side, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edge of tne aforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, releasable means for retaining the bexes in a substantially upright position, means for limiting angular movement of the boxes outward on their hinges from the upright position, and means whereby the covers will be automatically opened on said angular' movement of the boxes outward on theirhinge.
6. A device of the' class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally Vdisposed shelf or the like, of: an open ended box hinge-connected along its lowerY edge to a support, a cover hinged along the open end of the same side, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edgev of the aforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, releasable means for retaining the boxes in a substantially upright position and in adjacent parallel relation one with the other, and means for limiting angular movement of the boxes Voutward on their hinges from the upright position.
7. A device of the class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinge-connected along its lower edge to a support, a cover hinged along the open end of the same side, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edge of the aforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, releasable means for individually or collectively retaining the boxes in a substantially upright position, and means for limiting angular movement of the boxes outward on their hinges from the upright position.
8. A pantry receptacle of the class described, comprising the combination with a. horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinged along its lower edge with its open end in proximity to the underside of the shelf, a cover hinged along the open edge of the box on the same side as the hinge, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edge of theaforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, a resilient latch member secured to the front face of the first mentioned box, the free end of which mem? ber is turned down to engage a bead projecting downward from the front edge ofthe shelf and the outer edge of the second box and then turned outward to forni a finger engagement, means limiting outward movement of the first mentioned box from the wall, and means limiting outward movement of the second box from the front face of the first box.
9. A pantry receptacle of the class described, comprising the combination with a horizontally disposed shelf or the like, of an open ended box hinged along its lower edge with its open end in proximity to the underside of the shelf, a cover hinged along the open edge of the box on the same side as the hinge, a second box hinged along its lower edge to the front lower edge of thel aforementioned box, a cover for the same hinged to its back edge, a resilient latch member secured to the front face of the irst mentioned box the free end of which member is turned down to engage a bead projecting downward from the front edge of the shelf and the outer edge of the second box and then turned outward to form a finger engagement, means limiting outward movement of the first mentioned box from the 15 means connecting the cover of the secondv 20 box to an attachment of the irst box.
