COMPOUND TOOL.
Application led December 14, 1922. Serial No. 606,831.
To all whomz't may concer/n.:
Be it kno-wn that I, HENRY BAUM, citi-v zen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compound tools of the pocket. knife type, andit provides a tool which can be used as a pen knife or the like, as a. scraper, or as a cigar cutter, and the feature of the tool is that use may be niadeof old razor blades, one of which can' be set into a holder provided for the purpose, and which can be renewed from time to time by inserting other old or discarded blades.
The device will be more -fully understood from the following description and the ac' companying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan of the tool in folded position. Fig. 2 is a plan with the handle unfolded for use as a knife. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig 1. Fig. 4 is a plan ofthe tool with the handle partly closed. Fig 5 is a plan showing the blade holder swung out and the parts engaged for use as a scraper. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The handle consists of two parts 6 and 7 pivoted together at 8 with a knuckle joint so that the ends 9 of the section stop against each other. when the handle "is unfolded, shown in Fig. 2. This affords a good grip for the hand when the device is used as a lmife.
Each section of the handle is made of a piece of folded sheet metal, the foldI extending lengthwise with the handle. The section 6 is cut away as indicated at 10 to form a rectangular recess extending along the inner part of the free end. The blade holder is indicated'at 11, and consists of a piece of sheet metal folded upon itself, the outerl edges 12 being spaced apart to receive a blade 13 therebetween, and the inner edge being flattened or de ressed as indicated at 14, to enter between tile opposite sides ofthe handle section 6 a shoulder being produced at 15, on each si e. The holder 11 is ivoted at 16 between the folds of sides of t e handle section 6 at the end thereof, andthe end of the handle is slitted at 17 t0 ermit the blade holder to be swungaroun on its pivot to a y osition at a rig t angle to the length of t e handle, shown in Fig. 5, the edge of the rib 14 stopping against the and the device used as a scraper.
end ofthe slit 17, as shown at 18, when the blade holder is fully swung out. Y
The section 7 of the handle has a hole 19 through the same, and the edgespof the fold are spread apart, as indicated at 20,l so that the edge of the blade 13 may enter between the folds, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
By inserting a cigar tip through the holes 19 the blade will clip the same in an obvious manner. Theends of the folds of the section 7 are also spread or separated, as indicated at 21 so that when the blade holder is swung out to right angle position, as shown in Fig. 5, the handle section 7 may be swung in behind the same,.as shown, a slit 22 'at the fold of the handle section permitting the blade holder to enter between the lips 21 and stop against the shoulder 28 at the end of the slit. The edge of the blade is then presented outwardly inline with the handle,
and the device ma be used as a scraper, putty knife, or the li e.
Vhenthe handle is folded as shown in Fig. 1, the edge of the blade is` covered and protected. The handle may be swung open as shown in Fig 2, and the blade used as a knife. Or the parts may `be' swung to a position shown in Fig. 5 as above4 described The blade 13 is inserted in the by sliding the samein endwise. the blade being preferably of a typev having a folded clip 23 secured to its rear edge, and when the blade is slid in, this clip is engaged behind lips 24 extending along the outer edge holder 11` I of the holder, and, furthermore, the holder has a lip 25 struck in at one end of the chann l.
nel formed b the two sides,'which prevents the blade bein slid out of that end. Ac# cordingly the lade can only be removed by swinging the holder to the position shown in Fi 5 .which uncovers the open end of the ho der andpermits the blade to be pulled out.
I claim:
maI4 1. A compound tool comprising a handle its shoulders with the edges of said handle and'erranged to swing out of said recess, and a blade slidable endwise into and out of the holder, said holder having means to prevent the blade sliding-out of the holder except when swung out of said recess.
3. A compound tool comprising a. handle consisting of pivoted sections, a blade holder with. ,a blade therein, said blade holder being pivoted to the free end of one section and adapted to swing into rigid position in` a recess of said seelsion with its edges parallel w1t h said sectlon, or to be swung out perpendicular to sald section and into engagement with the free end of the other secvtion.
In testimon whereof, I aflix my signature in presence o two witnesses.
