E. c. SEARLE HEADLIGHT Filed Aug. 22 1922 WITNESSES l/VVE/VTOR d EC Seark 6M4 ATTORNEYS Patented Feh. 19, 192%.
UNITED STATEfi WATENT @FFHCCEO HEADLIGHT.
Application filed August 22, 1922. Serial No. 583,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. SEARLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hilo, in the Territory of Hawaii, have invented a new and Improved Headlight, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex I act description.
This invention relates to improvements in headlights, and more particularly to a headlight or attachment for headlights, designed.
to prevent glare, an object of the invention being to provide a conical or tapering ligh directing shield which will direct a bolt of light to illuminate the road ahead and defleet light on the ground, but which will prevent a spread of light or rather prevent the divergence of rays of light to an extent to cause glare to an approaching car.
A further object is to provide a headlight of the character described which can be used in connection with headlight mounts in ordinary use, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price.
With these and other objects in view, the
2a invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings,
- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improved headlight.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of Figure 1.
i 1 represents a lamp shell having a stationary lamp socket 2 therein, and 3 represents a. reflector spaced from the shell and having an annular flange 4 at its outer edge secured to the annular flange 5 of the shell, as will 1 more fully hereinafter appear. A disk or plate of glass 6 is located against the. flange 4 of reflector 3, and my improved conical shield 7 is positioned in front of the glass 6 and has an annular flange 8 located against the glass 6. The flanges 4, 5 and 8 are all perforated to receive clamping bolts, or screws 9, which are secured by nuts 10 to clamp the parts together.
11 represents a lamp preferalbly of the electric incandescent type having a lug 12 vided with an opening 17, or transparent portion, or any suitable form of lens to permit a bolt of light to be thrown forwardly to illuminate the road, but confined in diameter so as to prevent glare to those in the drivers seat of approaching vehicle.
The shield 7 is provided in the lower portion of its sides with elongated triangular openings 18, although of course, it is to be understood that these openings may have transparent portions therein if desired. The openings 18 are formed by stamping sections 19 therefrom which are bent outwardly and form outwardly and downwardly deflecting plates to direct the light along ,the road, ahead of the headlight, but prevent upward reflection.
It will be noted that my improved shield may be attached to ordinary headlights, but is preferably adapted for use in connection with the structure illustrated where the lamp 11 is capable of longitudinal adjustment for necessary focusing.
The interior of the shield 7 serves as a reflector, which co-operates with the reflector 3 to direct the rays of light in a small bolt forwardly and in a large lateral direction. This latter direction being downwardly as well as forwardly to 've the proper road illumination in front 0 the car.
The shield 7 is preferably of metal and opaque although it may be made of any suitable material, and l[ do not wish to be limited in this respect.
Various slight changes might he made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without de arting from my invention, and hence it c not limit myself to ,toward its forward end, where it is prothe precise details set forth, but consider myin its smaller end, having light passages in self'at liberty to make such changes and its sides, and fixed lates constituting realterations as fairly fall within the spirit flectors and located a ave the side light pas- 1 and scope of the appended claim. sages and inclined downwardly and out- I claim: wardly from.
A shield of the character described of general tapering form, having a light passage EDWARD COOPER SEARLE.
