Description

IF. M. HEERWAGEN FLEXIBLE RELIEF DECORATION.

P TENT-i PAUL M. HEERWAGEN, 0F FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS.
FLEXIBLE RELIEF DECORATION.
Application filedSeptember 15, 1922. Serial No. 588,474.
To @ZZ whom t may concern." Y
Be it known that I, PAUL M. HEERWAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayetteville, in the county of Vfashington and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flexible Relief Decorations, of which the following is a specific-ation.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a flexible relief decoration to take the place of plaster ornamentation or wood moldings and ornaments.
In the practice of my present invention I use rubber or other similar and suitable material to form moldings and decorative ornaments tobe used for wall decorations. This material is pressed, cast, cut, stamped o r vulcanized into the decorative shapes desired. The character of the material used leaves this relief perfectly flexible, so that the decorator is enabled to form his own designs at will with perfect modeling and is only limited in execution by his own talents and ability.
As is well known, wood and plaster do not sufficiently-bend and twist to fit in all places, while my present flexible relief deco ration readily applies and .adjusts itself for all decorative purposes and the application of rubber and the like as a relief decoration is more simple than wood and plaster and enables the operator to form his own designs out of my flexible unit system, relief ornamentation and molding.
The material used never shrinks nor swells and therefore does not pull off where applied.
These materials mentioned above as a decorative relief are unbreakable, thereby facilitating the forming or modeling and enabling the same to be carried out quicker and with more ease than the old principle of wood and plaster.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a plan view showing one form of design that may be worked with my dexible relief decoration.
Figure 2 is a similar view of another form of design. l
Figure is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 one form of design that may be worked by my improved flexible relief decoration, and in Figure 2 I rhave shown another form. In Figure 3, which is a cross section on the line 3-8 of Figure 2, the portion l 0f the design which is between the marginal edges, is shown as raised, while the marginal edges 2 are downturned so that a paste or other adhesive substance may be applied to such marginal edge, in order that the design may be -applied to the wall or other support.
vIt is of the essence of my invention to make my improvement in the form of a relief decoration member of rubber the edge portions of which define a design and are risica..
disposed laterally to the major portion of the member for the purpose b efore described, the said major portion including depressions and projections asbest shown in Figure 3. Y
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiments of my invention with a view to imparting a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiments. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific constructionand relative arrangement of parts, inasmuch as in the future practice of my invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as defined by my appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
l. A new article of manufacture including a relief decoration member for application to a wall or the like, formed of flexible material having the edge portion disposed laterally to its major portion and defining an open work design composed of a plurality of interconnected design forming elements, said edge portion being continuous and forming a support for the relief portion extending fromthe central portion to the outer edges, said major relief portion including depressions and projections.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a resoV lief decoration member for application to a Wall or the like; the said member being formed of exible rubber with its edge portion deiining an openwork design having a plurality of interconnected design forming elements; and disposed laterally to its major portion' Vfor attachment purposes, said edge extending from the central portion outwardly subsequently return-A ing to the central portion in forming each design element and With its said major portion including depressions and projections.
In testimon whereof l affix my signature.
AUL M. HEERWAGEN.
