Description

V. A. BREY COMBINED CONTAINER AD MATCH CARR-IER Filed May 15. 1922 idw Patented Feb. 19, 1924. i
UNITED SITES PATENT orrlcs.
vrcroa A. naar, or MINNEAPOLIS, ninnnsorii. .y
17 0 all whom t 'may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, VICTOR A. BREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain ber at one end adapted 'to receive articles,
such as cigarettes or a package of cigarettes and having a chamber at its `other end adapted to receive a sliding match box or match container. The consumption of cigarettes in this country has now reached large proportions As is well known it is particularly necessary for the cigarette user to carry a. box of matches with him. In lighting the cigarettes and lre-lighting the same it is frequently necessary for the user to Search in several pockets for matches after having gotten the cigarette ready for lighting.
It is an object of this invention to provide a container adapted to receive cigarettes or other articles, which container is also provided with means for carrying a match box comprising a sliding drawer.
It is another object of the invention to provide such a combined container and match box holder which can be easily and inexpensively made, preferably from a single blank of material.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section of the container;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 thereof, as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a View in side elevation partly in section of a modified form of container;
Fig. 4 is a vertical section thereof taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the conshown .in Fig. 3.:
COMBINED CONTAINER AND MATCH CARRIR.
Appiication med May 15, 1922. serai No. 560,965.
In Figs. 1 and 2, a container is shown .made of sheet metal vand fromv a single" blank. The blank is -folded into rectangular form'with the edges overlapping at one edge i or short side of the container, as clearly shown at 12 in Fig. 2, and the lower portions of the short sides or edges of the con tainer are folded inwardly at right angles in overlapping relation vto vform a partition 14a. The lower portions 22 of thevv wide r.sides of thecontainer extend inwardly a short distance at their bottom portions`,fasy
shown in Fig. 2, to form `the bottom .of
the container, a slot 23 thusbeing formed extending transversely across said bottom. A container is thus `formed havinga main compartment 24 with'` an open upper end, the bottom of which is formed by partition 14%1L and said container'hasV a transversely extendingsleeve formed bythe portions 13 Aof its flat sides and-the portions v22, the ends of'which sleeve, however, are
article to be carried in the pocket for carry.-
ing the cigarette or lcigar package and the match box.
In Figs. 3 and 4, another modified form of container is shown which also preferably will be made of sheet material. This container comprises a main portion 15 of elongated formation substantially rectangular in. cross section, which will be folded from a single blank and the overlapping portions secured together preferably by soldering.
The side portionsof this container also have lower ends of which are bent slightly toward each other. A slot is thus formed extending along the lower end of the device. The main portion of the container 15 has the upper portion of one of its sides formed as a hinge cover 17, the same being hinged along a transverse intermediate line by spaced lugs thereony interengaging with .spaced lugs formed an the .eide portion., all of downwardlyr projecting extensions 16, the
the said lugs receiving a pintle member' 18. The cover 17 is formed with a projection 19 of semi-circular forni extending at right angles to the main portion thereof and adapted to fit over the top of the main chamber 15. The portion 19 is slightly upturned at its edge to form a convenient means for opening the cover and is also formed with an indentation 2O adapted to spring into engagement with a similar indentation formed on the top of the chamber 15 and hold the cover in closed position. The match box 21 is adapted to be rictionally held between the projecting portion 16 of the sides.
The container shown in' Figs. 3 and l is' adapted to form a cigarette and match holder case and the cigarettes or cigars will preferably be removed from the commercial package and placed in the main chamber 15. The same will thus always be carried in convenient relation to the matches in the box 21. The container will form a pocket casehaving great utility and can be made as 'an ornamental casing. The casing or container shown in Figs. 1 to 5 may, of course be plated and decorated as desired.
From theabove description it is seen that applicant hasprovided a form of container Whiclrwill be of lgreat service for carrying both cigarettes and matches. While the containers are preferably designed for such articles, it is apparent that the same might be used for carrying other articles. i For in stance, the main chamber' in thedevice, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, might carry a pack of cards, while the small chamber might be used to carry a box of chips, or dice.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claim.
That is claimed is: l
A combined container. Yfor a standard carton of cigarettes and; a standard box of matches7 comprising an elongated substantially rectangular casing formed from a single blank of material having an open end and a partition extending 'th'ereacross adjacent its other end, said casing having its sides open beyond said partition yandhaving a slot formed in its' other end7 whereby a passage open at both ends is formed beyond said partition, thesides of which are movable toward each other and adapted frictionally to engage a standard box of matchesldisp'osed therein. f
1n testimony whereof I aiiix inysignature.
