Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Mar. 7,1916.
Application filed. April 24, 1914. Serial No. 834,153.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Match-Safes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. I r
This invention relates to a class of devices for holding matches.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a match safe designed to be hung upon a wall or placed upon a table or any suitable support for keeping matches so as to be convenient for use and wherein is employed a slidably held secondary tray or receptacle for receiving burned matches, ashes or the like so as to prevent the accumulation of litter or damage resulting from accidental fires.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a holder for conveniently supporting a lighted cigar; to provide a scratch plate or member adapted for use in lighting the matches and which is removably held upon the device so as to be readily replaced when worn-out by a new plate, and to provide a match safe of very simple and inexpensive construction.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of match safe embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device.
The match safe or device 10 has a casing 11 composed of a front wall 12 a rear wall 13, side walls 14 and 15, and a bottom-plate 16. The casing 11 is substantially rectangular in form, or may be of any other preferred shape, and upon the upper part of the rear wall 13 is an extension 17 having an opening 18 therein so as to permit said casing to be suspended from a pin driven into a support if desired.
The casing 11 has an open top and intermediate of said open top and the bottom plate 16 is a divisional plate 19 whereby an upper pocket or. receptacle 20 is provided for. holding'unburned matches. The top of the receptacle 20 is adapted to be closed by a lid 21 which ishinged, as at 22, to the rearwall 13 at its juncture with the extension 17 and upon the opposed lateral edges of said lid are provided depending flanges 23 and.
24 which are'adapted to engage the outer surfaces of the side walls 14 and 15 when the lid is closed upon the receptacle 20.
Upon the opposed side edges and the lower edge of the front wall 12 of the casing 11 are strips or flanges 25, 26, 27, and said strips are spaced a slight distance from the front wall so as to provide grooves 28, 29, 30 therebetween. In the grooves 28, 29, 30 between the front wall12' and the strips 25, 26, 27 is a removably held scratch plate 31. The scratch plate 31 may be of metal providedwith a corrugated or roughened exposed surface whereby a match will be ignited by frictional contact therewith, or said scratch plate may be of sand paper so as to be conveniently replaced when worn-out by usage. V
A compartment 32 is provided in the lower part of the casing 11 between the divlsional plate 19 and the bottom-plate 16, and access to said compartment is gained by forming the front wall 12 of less length than said casing, as shown in the drawing, whereby an opening is provided between the lower edge of the front plate and the bottom plate 16. Slidably held in the compartment 32 is a secondary receptacle or tray 33 for reception of burned matches, ashes, or the like so as to be safely retained therein for subsequent removal therefrom at desired times The tray 33 may be of a form to comply with the shape of the lower part of the casing 11, and upon the front wall thereof is a curved projecting shelf or flange 3a which 7 is adapted to support lighted cigars and may also be used as a handle for guiding the tray inwardly and outwardly of the com- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent p l. A match safe comprising a substantially rectangular casing having a division Wall providing upper and lower compartments, flanges at the sides and bottom edges of the front of the casing, a scratch-plate, and a cover for the upper compartment overlying a portion of the flanges and scratch-plate to prevent displacement of the latter when the cover is closed, but to permit removal thereof when the cover is opened. f
2. A match safe comprising a casing havinga division Wall providing upper and lower compartments, flanges at the sides and bottom edges of the front of the casing, a scratch-plate, and a cover for the upper compartment overlying a portion of the flanges and scratch-plate, and a tray for the lower compartment, said tray normally projecting and having a flange serving as a rest and handle.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty-third day of April, A. D. 1914.
