Description

t NITED STATES HORACE HARRIS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-FANS.
Specification forming part of Let ers Patent No. 148,294, dated March 10, 1874; application filed November 26, 1873.
To all whom "it may concern:
Y Be it known that I, HORACE HARRIS, of Newark, in the county of Essexand State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification: a
The object of my invention is to provide for holding a dustpan, and for moving the same when in use-receiving the dust from the broom-by the foot instead of the hand, and thus avoid a very perplexing part of house keeping.
To accomplish this, I construct a flat handle, D, with the edges strengthened with steel wire, in place of iron, commonly used.' The upper end of said handle is attached to the back part of a dust-pan, B. It is then bent over untilif the pan were lying on the floorit would strike the floor three or'four inches in the rear of the back, and an inch, more or less, below Then the dust is ready to be taken up, the toe of the foot is put in the loop made by the shape of the handle, and is pressed upon the part of it running from the floor to the bottom of the pan. This action of the toe presses the front edge of the pan down closely upon the floor and holds it there while the dust is being swept over it. The steel wire in the handle keeps this part of itin form. The sweeper can also with the foot move the dust-pan about as is required until all the dust is taken up.
I claim The dust-pan B, provided with the curved handle D, one end of which is attached to the back of the pan near its top, and the other end to the lower side of the pan near its center, thus forming a loop which will rest on the floor at a point in the rear of the pan, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
HORACE HARRIS.
