LENS-RIM REIVIOVING AND REPLACING DEVICE.
Application filed April 14, 1923. Serial No. 632,090.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED B. SEPPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Crystal, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lens- Rim- Removing and Replacing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- 1 ing.
This invention relates to lens rim removing and replacing devices and more particularly to a device for removing the lens rims of automobile headlights.
As is well-known to those familiar with the art, automobile headlights have the lenses thereof maintained in position upon the headlights by a bayonet slot engagement. These rims being subjected to the weather often become rusted and are extremely diiiicult to remove, necessitating the use of a screw driver or hammer or some similar expedient for forcing the rim circumferen tially to permit disengagement thereof from the headlight. The use of such devices injures the removable rim and in many cases breaks the lens.
An important object of this invention, accordingly, becomes to provide a device of this character constructed to clampingly engage the rim and having handles which may be grasped to rotate the rim, the grasping portions of the device being so constructed as to prevent destruction of the finish of the rim by their engagement.
These and other objects I accomplish by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with my invention; Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a view showing the same applied to a headlight to remove the lens rim thereof; and
Figures 4 and 5 are sections on the lines 44: and 55 of Figure 3.
In the construction of a tool I employ a straight piece of resilient material, such as fiat band spring steel, and form the ends thereof as at 5 toprovide rounded sections, the flat band being bent to ahalf round form, as more clearly shown in Figure 4. The center of the band is similarly formed as indicated at 4, this section being of approximately twice the length of the sections formed to provide end portions 5, the concave faces of the sections 4 and 5 being arranged at the same side of the strip. The intermediate portions 6 between the sections 4 and 5 are then longitudinally bent to a substantially semicircular form and these intermediate portions are faced by a strip of felt 6, secured in position by means of rivet 7. The strip is then bent centrally as at 4;, so as to bring the concave faces of the end portions 5 into opposition, the end sections normally diverging as illustrated and normally being spaced apart a sufiicient distance to permit the ready reception therebetween of a lens rim 8.
When the lens rim is positioned intermediate the sections the ends 5 are grasped with one hand and the portion 4 with the other hand, the rounded faces of these portions providing a smooth hand grip in each instance. The felt face is thus brought into clamping engagement with the lens rim and by applying pressure with one hand and pulling with the opposite hand the rim may be rotated to disengage the same. The felt faceswill prevent marring of the finish and will compensate for any inequalities upon the surface of the lens rim. It being wellknown to those familiar with the art that many rims have distributed about the surface thereof a plurality of rivets 8- maintaining the sections of the rim in assembled relation. By the use of this tool breakage of the lens 9 is prevented as well as the marring of the rim and the application and removal of the lens rim rendered a simple operation.
I claim 1. In a device for removing and replacing the lens rims of headlights, a pair of opposed semi-circular clamping portions, each provided at each end thereof with an outwardly directed arm, corresponding arms at one side of such portions having a connection therebetween tending to separate such semi-circular portions.

A tool for removing and replacing the lens rims of headlights, comprising a strip of fiat resilient material, formed concavo-con- Vex at its end portions andat its central. portion and intermediate such end and central 5 portions With substantially semi-circular bends, the strip being bent centrally to bring the concave faces of the end portions and the central portion into opposition to thereby form rounded handles whereby the tool may be grasped to compress the semi-circular portions against the rim of the headlight.
