Description

Feb. 26, 1929.
w. A. STUART 'ERASER HOLDER.
Flled July 19, 192" Patented Feb. 26, 1929.
PATENT. OFFICE.
- WILLIAM A.S'I"UAR"1,0F OSWEGQ'NEW YORK.
ERAsRR HOLDER.
Application filed July 19,
The object of my present invention is the provision of a peculiar and advantageous holder, designed primarily for holding erasers in such manner that the same may be conveniently manipulated, though it may be used to advantage for holding in removable manner elements other than erasers of the rubber block type.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement'hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section i of the holder, the section being taken in aplane parallel to Figure 1'. 1
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross sectiontaken. on the line 33 of Figure 2. i
Figure 4 is a plan view of the strip from which the spring of the holder is fabricated.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
I show in Figure 1 two erasers 1 of rubber block type as properly secured'in my novel holder, and by particular reference to Figure 1 it will be noted that portions of the rubber block erasers are housed and strongly clamped in the end portions of the holder.
My novel holder is made up of a body '2, clamping members 3, preferably two in num ber, and a spring 4. The body 2 is preferably formed of sheet steel and is of channel cross section with transverse apertures '5 in its side walls and with jaw portions'6 at its ends. The clamping members 3 are of channel cross section and are nested between the side walls of the body 2 and are provided at their outer ends with jaw portions 7 in opposed relation to the jaw portions 6 of the body 2 so as toclamp and hold the erase-rs 1, after the manner shown in Figure 1. The side walls of the clamping members 3 are provided with protuberances8 whichare preferably pressed from the said side walls and are disposed in the apertures 5 so as to constitute trunnions for the clamping members 3.
As will'be understood by comparison of Figures 2, 3 and d, the spring .4 is in the form of a strip fabricated from a blank such as shown in Figure 4. The said blank has a central protuberance "9 adapted to be seated and held in an aperture 10 in the bottom wall 1927. Serial No. 206,933.
of the body 2, and in' addition to its shallow bight portion being provided with the said protuberance 9, the spring isshaped as shown 7 in Figure 2 so as to provide the bights 11 andthe arms 12, the latter being arranged to bear against the transverse walls of the clamping members 3- at points between the'transverse planes of the pivot points of the jaw'members 3. The spring 4 is preferably made of spring steel appropriately hardened so as to contribute to the efiiciency and durability of the device. i
Manifestly when the clamping members 3 are maintained in the positions shown in Figures l and 2by the action of the spring 4, the rubber erasers 1 or other devices interposed between the jaw portions 6 and 7 will be strongly held, and it will be manifest that through the medium of the holder the said rubber erasers or other devices may beconveniently and efliciently wielded or moved. It will also be apparent that when it is desired to remove the rubber erasers 1 or other held devices, the same may bereadily ac-- complished after the inner arm portions of the clamping members 3 are depressed by pressure applied to the contiguous or inner end portions of the clamping members 3, and
when this is done the erasers 1 or other held devices may be expeditiously and easily rev moved from between the jaw portions 6 and 7 and may as readily be replaced by fresh erasers 101- other devices to be held in the holder. 1 i
It Willbe apparent from the foregoing that my novel device is susceptible of-being expeditiously and easily produced withoutthe employment of expensivemachinery and that the device as a whole is strong and durable and furthermore well adaptedto withstand the usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected.
I would also have it understood that within the discretion of the manufacture, the body 2 and the clamping members 3 may be embellished in any desired manner so as to enhance the ornamental character of the device.
I have entered into a detailed description of the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, andexact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not Within the scope of Which modifications may be made Without departure from my invention.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A holder comprising a channel-like body with jaw portions at its ends and also With a central aperture inits transverse \vall, channel-like clamping men'ibers nested between and pivoted to the side Walls of the body at opposite sides of the transverse center thereof and having jaw portions opposed to the jaw portions of the body, and a spring strip arranged alsoin the body and in the clamping members and having a protuberance disposed in the aperture in the transverse Wall of the body and also having bights and inwardly directed arms bearing against the transverse Walls of the clamping members at points between the transverse planes of the pivot points of the clamping members.
' 2. In a holder and in combination a channel-like body having an aperture in its transverse Wall, a channel-like clamping member nested between and pivoted to the side Walls of the body, and a spring strip having a protuberance disposed in the aperture in the body bottom Wall and also having a bight and an inwardly directed arm bearing against the transverse Wallof the clamping member at a point spaced inwardly from the transverse plane of the pivotal connection of the clamp ing member to the body. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
