WILLIAM E. KING, or SPRINGFIELD, iuessecnusnr'rs, nssrenonro MILTON-BRADLEY COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, AGORPOBATION OF MASSACHU rAIn'rrNe OUTFIT.
Application filed March as, 1923. Serial 627.044.
To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. K1Ne, citizen of the United States. residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements-in Painting Outfits, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to painting outfits such as are particularly adapted for use by children and the object of the inven tion is to improve and simplify the construction of such outfits from a commercial Referring to the drawings, the painting.
outfit therein shown comprises a box 5 and a plurality of Paint cups 6 which are mounted in the box in a novel and improved manner. The box 5 is of shallow'rectangular form and is provided with a. suitable hinged-cover 7. The paint cups 6, which may be filled with the usual water cOlOr paints. are shaped in cross-section as clearly shown in Fig. 2, having their lower portions formed with a substantially frusto conical exterior. The paint cups 6 rest upon a platform 8 which is spaced above the bottom wall of the box 5 and is supported by downturned marginal flanges 9. superposed above the platform 8 and spaced therefrom is aplatc 10 which is provided with a plurality of apertures 11 for receiving and relatively locating thepaint cups. The plate 10 is provided with downturned marginal flanges 12 which fit closelv against the side walls of the box. The diameter of the apertures 11 is such as to receive the upper or narrow extremities of the frusto conical. portions of the paint cups but said diameter is less than that of the lower faces of the cups so that said cups cannot be removed from the apertures 11 without first removing the plate 10 from the boar. Thus the paint cups are positively retained their respective places so as to avoid any possibility of accidental displacement; By means of the platform 8 the paint cupsare supported at' 'a" convenient height for use. the upper portions of the cups protruding above the retaining plate nearly to the plane of the top of the box.
The plate 10, by fitting tightly within the side walls of the box, serves as a brace to reinforce these walls and thereb to strengthen the. box. The box," theplat orm and the retaining plate may "advantageously be madeof cardboard. o I g I The cupretaining plate 10 is further provided with an'elongated' rectangular aperture l l for receiving a mixing slab 1 5 and loeating the's'ame relatively to the paint cups. The mixing slab 15 rests upon the platform 8 whereby it is supported'at a convenient height for use. I a f It has not been found necessary to glue the flanges 12 of the plate 10 to the side walls of the box 5 in order to securely hold said plate together with the paint cups in place. The flanges 12 fit tightly enough within the box after having been properly assembled thereineto frictionallyresist dis placement thereof. These flanges may,
however. be glued to the'side walls of thebox, if desired. In a like manner it is unnecessary to glue or otherwise secure the lower edges of the flanges of thesupporting Platform to the bottom of the box. Inas- V i I i much. therefore, as no gluing or other fastening operations are necessary in the process of assembling the parts of the outfit, the same may be accomplished with a mini-- mum expenditure of time and effort. Fur
thermore, the retaining plate, not being permanentlysecured in place may at any time be removed to permit the renewal of the paint cups. i
A block of sheets 16 having printed thereupon pictures to be colored may convene iently be detachably secured by suitable means to the inside of the cover 7 and suitable brushes or crayons 17 may be included with in the box to complete the outfit. j
It will be readily appreciated that the improved outfit above described is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, The paint cups are .retainedin place by means ofthe apertured plate 10, it not being neces:
sary to glue or otherwise, pemnanentlysa i-w cure" them in. place. In assembling the parts the paint cups may be inserterhupper,ends lowermost in the retaining plate 10, the latter being inverted to receive them. The platform 8 may then be laid in inverted position upo'n'uie upwardly directed bottom faces of the-cups to support thesame and retain them in their respective apertures while the whole assembly is being inverted and placed right side up in the box 7 By thus assembling the parts a substantial savingof time may be eifected. their assembled the outfit presents thoappearance of an article which has.beennianufactured with a considerable. amount of care and it is capable of being sold for a higher price than ordinary outfits oft-his sort.
The invention having been described, what is claimed anddesired to be secured by Letters Patent is i 1. A holder for paint cups or the like com-. prising a box, a platespaced above the bot.-
tom wall, of the box, andapertured to. receive and relatively'locate a plurality of said cups,
and a platform intenpo se d between said plate and bottomiwallland spaced tromsaid parts for supporting said cups with their upper' ortionsv ro'ectin thro'u 'hfsaid-apertures,
. a b a 2. A holder for paint cups or the like comprising a ,box,a plate spaced above the bottom wall of the box and apertured to receive and relatively locate saidcups, downturned marginal flanges on said plate torsupport;
ing the same alplatform iiite'rposed between said plateiand bottom wall and spaced from said parts for supporting said cups, and
downturnedj marginal flangesv on said platform for supporting the same, I v a 3. A holder for paint cupsor the like com.-
prising a box, a plate spaced abovethe bottom wall of the box and apertur'ed to receive and relatively locate said cups; downturned marginal fiangeson said plate t'or supportingthe latter-by engageine1itwith said botof said cups to prevent upward displacement of the cups.
5. A painting outfit: comprising a box havingaremovable cover; a plate within the box arranged parallel to the bottom wall thereofl said plate being; of the same: area assaid bottom wall. and having; a plurality of apertures extending therethr'oupln; downturned.
marginal, flanges on said plate, theouter .65 sides of said flanges fitting tightlvjagainst i the side walls of the box and the lower edges 01"" the box, afplatform -.interpose.d between sa d plate and said bottom wall downturned -marginal flanges on said platform supporting said platform by engagement withsaid;
bottom wall, a mixing slab resting uponsaid V platform and PI'OJQCtlIlg through one of said1 apertures, and a plurality of paint cups resting upon said platform and having their upper portions projecting through the othen apertures in said plate said cups having their lower portions of greater dian ieter and their upper portions of less diameter than the apertures through which they project of said flanges resting upon the; bottom wall iiithereby causing them to be retained in their respective relative positions.
In testimony whereof I have ailixed my signature.
WILLIAM E. KING.
