C. R. STEELY ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed Oct. 2. 1922 Patented 0st. 23, 1923.

CHARLES R. STEELY, OF CORSICANA, TEXAS.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed October 2, 1922. Serial No. 591,870.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. STEELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1208 WV. Park Ave, Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to advertising devices, and more particularly to an advertising support adapted for attachment to a telephone.
A more specific object of the invention 15 to provide a device of this character which engages the opening commonly formed 1n the receiver hook of the telephone.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is attachable to the receiver hook at the opening thereof by simply applying pressure, forcing a portion of the advertising support into the opening where it is frictionally held.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be Very inexpensively produced, readily applied and which when in position will not in any manner interfere with the application to or removal from the hook of the receiver which is normally carried thereby.
These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanving drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred em bodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
ln the drawings Figure l is a side elevation showing an advertising device constru ted in accordance with my invention applied to the recci cr hook of a telephone;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view howing the advertising device and hook before the attachment of the advertising device; and
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the advertising device applied.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the hook of a receiver and 11 the opening usually formed at the extremitv of the arms of the hook. The walls of these openings are usually curved in such manner that the smallest diameter of the opening occurs at the center of thickness of the book. The character 12 designates a member preferably circular in cross section and of greater diameter than the opening of the hook, the member being reduced, as indicated at 13, to form a shank slightly greater in diameter than the mean diameter of this opening.
The member 12 is formed of some elastic substance, preferably cork, though rubber or similar material may be employed if so desired. Accordingly, when the shank 13 is forced into the opening 11, the shank being of greater diameter than the mean diameter of the opening, will expand at oppositesides of the central portion of the opening as respects the thickness of the hook arm in which the opening is formed and will retain the member 12 firmly in posit-ion upon the hook. To that face of the member 12 remote from the face bearing the shank 13 may be applied advertising matter either directly to the face or upon a tab 1 glued or otherwise secured thereto. h
It will be obvious that an advertising device constructed in accordance with my invention may be readily applied to a telephone and since the shank 13 is of less length than the width of the arm of the hook in which the opening is formed, it will not in any way interfere with the placement or removal of the receiver from the hook. It will furthermore be obvious that the general form of the device as hereinbefore set forth may be in some manner modified without departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself thereto except as hereinafter claimed. I
I claim The combination with a. telephone receiver hook having an opening formed therein, of a member having an elastic shank of slightl v greater diameter than the opening at one side thereof and provided upon the opposite side with advertising matter. said shank being of less length than the thickness of that portion of the hook in which the opening is formed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature.
