SKIN-MARKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 18. 1920. Serial No. 367,024.

Be it known that I, OLAF H. Foss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Maddock, in the county of Benson and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Skin-Marking Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in skin marking devices, an object of the invention being to provide an improved device for puncturing a skin, and clenching an eyelet marker in the skin.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated, which will be comparatively simple in construlction, which can; be easily and quickly operated, and which will be strong and durable in use.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 6 is an enlarged view in section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
1 represents the base of my improved device, having a bracket 2 thereon, the latter made with an arm 2 providing longitudinal and rotary mounting for a plunger 3. A spring 4 is positioned on the upper portion of the plunger 2 between the bracket arm 2 and a cross pin 5 in the plunger, exerting upward pressure on the plunger and holding the same in normal elevated position.
A lever 6 is pivotally connected at one end to the bracket 2 as shown at 12, and projects over the upper end of plunger 3.
A cylindrical post 7 is provided on the base 1 and has an annular groove 8 around the upper end and is made with a center opening 9 and an outlet passage 10 communicating therewith.
A head 13 is provided on the lower end of the plunger 3, and this head 13 is made the grooved upper end of the post 7 while the recess let is of appreciably larger diameter and is provided centrally with a cylindrical punch 16 fitting the opening 9 in the post.
A weighted catch 17 is pivotally connected to the upper portion of plunger 3 and is adapted to enter either of a pair of grooves 18 in opposite sides of the bracket arm 2' to hold the head 13 in position to register either of-the recesses 14 or with the post 7.
I employ an identification eyelet consisting of upper and lower ring members 19 and 20 respectively.
The upper member 19 contains identification characters 21 and is formed with an annular flange 22 normally depending from its outer edge.
The lower member 20 is provided with an annular upwardly projecting flange 23 at its inner edge and both members have substantially the same internal diameter as the grooved upper end of the post 7.
In operation the lower member 20 is positioned in the groove 8 of the post 7 and the upper member 19 in the recess 14 around the punch 16. The skin 24 is then positioned over the upper end of the post, and when the head 13 is adjusted to register the punch 16 with the post 7 and the plunger forced downwardly by the lever 6 the parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 3.
This movement of the plunger will cause the punch 16 to cut out a circular portion 25 of the skin which will fall through the out-let 10 and may be filed away to protect against substitution of the skin. The head 13 is then permitted to elevate and is turned to register the recess 15 with the post, the catch 17 being operated to permit this movement, and then look the plunger against turning movement.
'When the plunger 3 is again depressed the wall of recess 15 and the grooved upper end of the post 7 will force the eyelet members 19 andQO into coupled clenching engagement with the skin as shown in Fig. 4.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base, a hollow post on the base, a bracket, a plunger having rotary mounting in the bracket, a head on the end of the plunger having a pair of recesses at opposite sides thereof adapted to register with the post, a punch in one of said recesses, a setting shoulder associated with the other of said recesses, a pair of levers carried by the plunger, said bracket having a pair of grooves in its outer face, and said levers adapted to be positioned in said grooves to lock the plunger against rotary movement.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a hollow post on the base, an annular shoulder around the post, a bracket, a plunger having rotary mounting in the bracket, a plunger head carried by the plunger, a punch carried by the plunger head and adapted to fit Within said hollow post, said plunger head having an annular recess therein around the base of the punch, said shoulder and said annular recess adapted to receive eyelet members, and means for clamping said eyelet members together.
8. A device of the character stated comprising a base, a hollow post on the base, adapted to support a skin an annular shoulder around said post adapted to receive an eyelet member, a bracket, a plunger carried by the bracket, a plunger head on the plunger, a punch on the plunger head adapted to fit within said hollow post and perforate said skin, said plunger head having an annular recess therein around said punch adapted to carry another eyelet member, and said plunger head having a circular recess therein, the walls of said recess adapted to fit over the end of said hollow post whereby the eyelet members may be clamped together between said shoulder and plunger head after the skin has been perforated.
