ronaisrs GUIDE.
Application filed April 21,1921. S'eria1 No. 463,313;
To whom it may concern: i
Be it known that-l, Pn'rnn P. Goncrm- DIEL. a citizenof the United States, and residiug'at Decatur, county of Macon, Illinois,
v have invented-the new and useful Improve meut in Tourists Guides, of whichithe following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tourists guide whichis adapted for mounting by the road side or in any other public place so as to be accessible for reference bypassing tourists and others.
" One of the objects of this invention is to provide means easily accessible to tourists passing along the highways, such as auto-- mobile tourists, whereby information con, cerning the roads, cities and towns and such other data as maybe desirable canbe pre-' sented in a simple and economical manner,
Another object of this invention is to provide such means for dispensing information which may also be used for displaying advertising matter and the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide such an information dispensing device which shall be simple and cheap to construct. and which shall be durable and reliable in operation. 7
Further objects will appear from the detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in'which:
Figure 1 is a, front elevation of a device embodying this invention with the front lowered so as to gain access to the information;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2'2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the device shown with the front closed;
Figure 4 is a section on line 44, Figure 3; and V Figure 5 is perspective view shown with the front down 'Referring to the accompanying drawing, 1 designates the casing which may be constructed of galvinized iron or similar ma terial so as to be weather-proof. 2 is the front which is hinged at 3 to the casing. Attached to the front near the bottom is a pair of brackets 4 upon which are pivotally mounted a series of leaves 5 adapted for receiving cards or'sheets containing the desired information or advertising matter, or both.
The leaves 5 are constructed as hollowframes mto which the information bearmg cards may be inserted. Sheets of mica or similar transparent material may alsobeiuserted to cover the lnformation andadvertising sheets so as to afiordf'protection thereto. The insideof the front may also be similarly provided with means for holding a map or other information sheet and a similar mica covering 12. The bottom eorners of each leaf 5] are provided with pivot-- pins 6 adapted to engage holes in, the brackets 4: to provide a pivotal mounting.
Attached to the outside ofth'e front 2 is a strip 7 extending some distance below the hinge?) and adapted to form a lever; At the lower extremity of the lever 7 is a weight 8. The weight 8 is heavy enough to over-balance the front 2 so that when-the said front is relcased','the weight8- will fall and by means o f-the lever 'iwill raise the front to closed position, as shown in F igures 3 and 4:. As shown in Figure 4: the bulk of the weight 8 is placed in the rear of the lever 7 so that even with the front 2 in closed position, the center of gravity of said weight will be inthe rear of the pivot 3 so that a closing force will still be effective to keep the front 2 closed against the casing. The sides of the front 2 may be provided with flanges 9 adapted to engage corresponding flanges 10 on the sides of the easing to make thesame weather-proof.
For the same reason the top 11 should extend some distance over the front so as to prevent access of rain and snow into the interior of the casing. 7
It will be seen that this device provides a cheap and simple means for dispensing information to tourists along the roads or any other public places and at the same time of displaying advertising matter.
The device may be mounted on a post or wall in such a location as to be accessible either from the road or from an automobile or other conveyance. By simply lowering the front, the information relative tothe roads and places in the immediate neighborhood may be gained and at the same time attention will be directed to advertisformation sheets the downward movement of the back and the bracket thereon is limited by the engagement ofthe'lever 7 with the bottom of the case accordingly it is not necessary to provide auxiliary supporting means. Upon releasing the front 2 after the desired information has been obtained, the weight 8 will raise said front to closed position. During such movement, the bracket a moving with the front will carry the leaves 5 into the casing 1 by a simple move-- it is, therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific details shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An outdoor tourists guide, comprising, a weather proof protecting casing adapted for mounting on a highway, a front mounted on and movable forwardly from said casing, a series of information leaves mounted within and protected by said casing and adapted for movement out of said casing when said front is opened,
said leaves being movable into said casing with said front when closed, and means for sustaining said casing front when open.
An outdoor tourists guide, comprising, ,a weather proof protecting casing adapted for mounting on a highway, a front mounted on and movable forwardly from said casing, a series of information leaves mounted for movement out of said casing when said front is opened, said leaves being movable into said casing with said front when closed, and means for automatically closing said front when released.
3. An outdoor tourists guide, comprising, a weather proof protecting casing adapted for mounting on a public highway, a front mounted on and movable forwardly from said casing, a series of open frames adapted to receive cards containing touring information, means for mounting said frames for movement out of said casing when said front is opened and for movement into said casing when said front is closed, said frames being constructed and arranged so that both sides thereof may be displayed when the front is open, and means for sustaining said front when open.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature this 12th day of April, 1921.
PETER P. GOBBERDIEL.
