Oct.23,1923. I mm? H. C- THRIFT APPARATUS FOR SCREWING TOGETHER AND UNSCREWING PIPE JOINTS AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 9. 1922 ?atented Get. 23, 1923.
HOMER C. THRIFT, C'F BUBKBURNETT, TEXAS.
APPARATUS roe sonnwrrro TOGETHER AND UnsoREwInG PIPE JOINTS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed January 9, 1922. Serial No. 527,990.
T 0 all 10 71cm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER C. THRIFT, citizen of the United States, residing at Burkburnett, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Screwing Together and Unscrewing Pipe Joints and the-like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an apparatus for screwing together and unscrewing joints of pipe and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described formed to readily engage with a tubular 0r cylindrical body such as a joint of pipe or rod, whereby the same may be turned for the purpose of screwing said joints together or unscrewing and separating them.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be readily released from the pipe.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described which will readily receive pipes or rods of different diameters.
IVith the above and other objects in view the invention has particular. relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of the device partially broken away and,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, thenumeral 1 designates a ringlike member having peripheral sprocket teeth 2 by means of which it may be driven by a conventional sprocket chain. Detachaoly secured to the inside of this ring, at one side there is an arcuate toothed jaw 3. Opposite this fixed jaw there is the movable jaw 4 which is swung upon the outer end of the arm 5. This arm is formed integral with the post 6 which works in a bearing 7 in the ring 1. The pipe to be turned is indicated by the numeral 8. The post 6 has a square extension 9 formed to receive a wrench 10 by means of which it may be turned. In Figure 1 the movable jaw 4 is shown, in dotted lines, released from the pipe and in full lines, in engagement with the pipe. In operation the ring 1 may be rotated in either direction, as arm 5 is of sufficient length to prevent it from passing center so that the device may be used either for screwing or unscrewing pipe. When it IS desired t pass a collar through the jaws the wrench 10 is applied and the jaw 5 swung backwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1 so as to give room for the colla to pass through and said jaw may then be swung back into engagement with the pipe.
What I claim is;
1. A device of the character described including a ring-like rotary member having a fixed jaw within said member, a swinging jaw movable toward and from the fixed jaw, and peripheral teeth carried by the rotary member.
2. A device of the character described including a ring-like rotary member forming a casing and having peripheral sprocket teeth a detachable jaw fixed therein, an opposing movable jaw mounted therein and means for moving the latter jaw toward and from the former.
3. A device of the character described including a rotary ring provided to receive a pipe, an arcuate pipe engaging jaw fixed to one side thereof, a swinging arm mounted in the other side of the ring, a pipe engaging jaw carried by said arm, and means for manually swinging said arm.
4:. A device of the character-described in cluding an annular rotatable casing provided to receive a pipe, a pipe engaging member fixed to one side thereof within the casing, a swinging arm pivoted to the casing opposite said member, a pipe engaging member carried by the free end of said arm and means for manipulating the arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HOMER C. THRIFT.
