W. KLOCKE DRAWING PRESS wumtoz Patented Sept. 18, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KLOCZE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO E. W. BLISS COMPANY, 01'
nzaooxmm, NEW YORK,
A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
DRAWING PRESS.
Application filed June 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I WILLIAM KIDCKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York city, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawing presses, and aims to provide improvements therein.
The invention provides a novel blankholder or die-carrying slide operating mechanism, of simple, durable and eflicient construction, and well adapted to transmit symmetrical pressure to such a slide.
The invention further provides a construction wherein the arts of the blankholder or die-carrying s ide operating mechanism may be arranged in close proximitv on the frame of the press, and also preferably in close association and proximity to the punch slide operating mec anism.
The invention further comprises a novel combination, and sub-combinations, hereinafter more fully set forth, of parts constituting a drawing press.
Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front or rear view, in elevation, of a drawing press according to one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the press shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, of a second embodiment of the invention.
Figure 4 is a view, in side elevation, of the parts shown in Figure 3.
Referring to said drawings, numeral 1 designates a slide adapted to reciprocate to and from a bed 3, one of these parts being adapted to carry a blank-holder and the otherpart being adapted to carry a die. Numeral 5 designates a punch slide, which may work either toward the bed or the blank-holder, depending upon the position of the die, but, as here shown, is referably arranged to work through the sli e 1.
The slide 1 convenientl reciprocates upon slideways or gibs 7, on t e si e pieces 9 of the press frame, these side pieces being conveniently connected by an overhead intermediate piece 10.
5 Numeral designates the mechanism for 1920. Serial No. 388,839.
operating the punch slide and numeral 17 designates the means for operating the blank holder slide.
The means for operating the punch slide conveniently comprises a crank shaft 18, connected to the slide 5 through suitable connecting rods 19, and the crank shaft 18 preferably extends through the side pieces 9 of the press frame, and conveniently has, on its outer end or ends, rotary driving part, as, for exam 1e, a wheel or gear 20. In the case of wid presses or heav duty presses, it is preferable to provide driving parts 20 at each end of the crank shaft 18.
The blank-holder slide operating mechanism 17 conveniently comprises a rocking part or parts 22, conveniently in the form of rock shaft 23, and in wide presses, or heavy duty presses, these rocking parts, or the rock shaft 23, are preferabl arranged on two sides of a mid-plane o the press, in such manner as to transmit a symmetrical pressure to four or more points of connection to the blank holder slide 1. The connection between the rocking parts or rock shafts and blank holder slide are conveniently in the form of toggles 25.
The rocking parts or rock shaft or shafts are preferably connected to a slide 27 which slide is conveniently operated by a lever 30 fulcrumed upon the frame of the press, turning through a relatively short arc, for example, and having a link connection 31, Figures 1 and 2, or 31, Figures 3 and 4, with said slide,'and also conveniently havin a link 35 connected to a reciprocatory driving part, which driving part is preferably an eccentric part or pin 37, upon the drivin part or gear 20 on the crank shaft 18 (w ich crank shaft operates the punch slide In the embodiment of the Figures 1 and 2, the slide 27 is mounted upon the intermediate portion 10 of the frame, and preferabl in the mid-plane of the press. The rocking parts 22, in this embodiment, are most conveniently in the form of a rock shaft or shafts 23, symmetricall disposed with relation to the slide 27, an the slide is convenientl connected to an arm or arms '40 on the roc shaft through a link 41, the
slide being thus connected to the rock shaft intermediate the ends thereof, and the connections with the slide 1. This arrangement eliminates considerable torsion in the rock shafts, and also provides a uniform torsion between the point of application of the driving force to the rock shaft and the points of connection of the rock shaft to the blank holder slide 1.
The lever 30 is preferably arranged substantially parallel to the blank holder or horizontal plane of the press, and conveniently extends to a point above the upper face of the driving part or gear 20, thus providing for a transmission of the driving force from the outer side of the driving part or gear 20 over its periphery to the parts of the blank holder operating mechanism on the press frame. Ball and socket connections 44, 45, are preferably provided between the link 35 and the lever 30, and the link 35 and the eccentric part or pin 37, in order to allow for the turning of the link 35 in two planes,
The arrangement of the actuating slide 27 is preferably such that the link 41 is substantially at right angles with the line of the toggles 25, when the said toggles are extended, and the arrangement furthermore is such that, with the parts in the position just described, the eccentric part is passing through the angular positions of its movement in the vicinity of 270 degrees.
In Figures 3 and 4, the slide 27 is arranged upon the side piece 9 of the frame, preferably between or in a plane between the driving part or gear 20 and the said side piece 9, the side piece being provided with gibs 50 for the slide 27, and the slide being conveniently cut out or slotted in its portion which is in line with the crank shaft, as indicated at 52.
The lever 30 is preferably connected to its drivin part, which is preferably the gear or driving part 20, in the same manner as the lever 30 in Figures 1 and 2, viz, through a link 35 connected to an eccentric pin or part 37 along the outer side of the said driving part 20. Ball and socket joints 44, 45 at the ends of the lever 35 are also provided.
The rocking parts or rock shaft or shafts 22, 23 are preferably connected at an end orends to the slide 27, the rock shaft or shafts 23, for example, conveniently extending beyond the side frame 9 of the press and being connected to the slide through an arm 54 and a link 55, pivoted on the slide 27. In the case of wideor heavy duty presses, the rocking parts at each side of the press, or the two ends of a rock shaft, may be each driven by a slide 27 and operating mechanism similar to that shown in the present embodiment, viz, the embodiment illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. In li ht duty presses, the rock shaft or shafts 2% may be driven from one end onl without objectionable torsions or strains lieing developed.
The inventive ideas herein set forth may receive other embodiment than those herein specifically illustrated and described.
