Be it known that I, ARTHUR SoHonNnRUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York a and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in 10 receptacles of the type embodying a stoppered vessel, particularly applicable for use as a perfume container.

Receptacles of this kind are usually ornamental in appearance and comprise a con- Ila tainer for the perfume and a stopper which when the articleis originally sold is secured in position in the neck of the container. After the article has been purchased and is in use, the stopper is frequently removed and reinserted and considerable difiiculty has heretofore been found in satisfactorily retaining the stopper in position before the sale of the article, to prevent loss of contents thereof, actual leakage or by evaporation.

The principle object of my invention is to provide a simple construction of bottle and stopper to permit the use of means, such as a cord or ribbon for securely retaining the stopper in position;

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view thereof and Figure 2 is an edge elevational view.

My improvements are applied both to the bottle or container and to the stopper. one being complemental to the other, and. in that sense constituting an entity.

Referring to the drawing. 1() denotes the receptacle or bottle proper-which may be in the form of a rather flat elongated figure. having a curved breast portion 11 which is continued toward the lower end of the receptacle to form hook members 12 which overhang the side edges of the bottle 10. Below the hook members 12 are reinforcing shoulders 13, the construction being such that between the shoulder 13 and the underside of the hook 12 a fairly deep recess 14 is provided. The bottle body is provided with an elongated neck member 15 having a tapered bore 15.

Insertible into the neck 15 is a stopper which comprises a head 16, an intermediate plug member 17 which is shaped to conform to the bore 15, and an extended applicator member 18 which dips into the contents of the bottle 10 and is used to apply such contents to the person.

The entire construction is preferably one of glass, the inner neck portion 15, or more particularly speaking the bore 15 being of ground glass and the plug 17 of the stopper also being of ground glass so that when these two parts are in engagement they grip one another fairly closely. For ordinary purposes a substantially effective closure is obtained by the intcrengagement of the ground glass plug 17 with the ground glass bore 15, but as is well known, these parts may be quite readily separated and consequently a more effective means must be provided by the manufacturer for initially retaining the stopper in position. With this object in view, 1 form practically centrally about the entire head 16 of the stopper a groove 19 to receive a cord or ribbon such as 20, this cord being laid in the groove 19, then passed under the hooks 12 and into the grooves 14 and finally tied in a knot 21 whereby the stopper is firmly retained in position and the ribbon 20 adds to the otherwise ornamental appearance of the device as a whole.

The form selected by me for illustrative purposes is purely arbitrary and has been chosen because it is substantially the same as that now placed on the market by me. It will be understood however that the shape of both the bottle proper and the stopper may be very greatly varied, provided the stopper has a groove substantially like the groove 19 and the bottle has overhung hooks substantially like the books 12 shown in the accompanying drawing.
