nire stares JOHNJ. MCGUCYKIN, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB. TO LOUISk SCHWAB, 0F
YORK, N. Y., Derive Busrivn i VALVE-STEM Application me@ May e,
To NZZ whom #may concern Be it known that l, JOHN J. MGGUCKIN, a citizen of the United VvStates, residing at Brooklyn, Kings Countyr` New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve-l ments in TValve-Stem Lengtheners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for stretching and thereby lengthening the valve stems of internal combustion engines, which valve stems have, Yfor instance, become shortened by wear so as not to cooperate properly with the actuating cams; and my improvements are directed particularly to means whereby the stein may be swaged at 'one or more points so as to stretch the stem lengthways to the desired extent and withoutbending or distorting t-he stemfrom its proper alignnient.
in the drawings Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view ot my improved tool showing y a valve stemin place therein; and Fig. 2 is an end view oi" the same lookingto the left on Fig. 1.
Similar parts are designated by similar reference numerals in all the figures.
The body 1 of the tool has a central longitudinal bore 2 adapted to receivea valve stem 3 so as to bring it directly between the swaging pistons -l1 5, which slide in boresG and 7 in hubs S and 9` 'formed integral with the body 1. rlhe pistons are, preferably, prevented 'from rotating in their sockets'by suitable means, such, for instance, as p-ins 10, 11 projecting from the pistons and traveling in slots 12, 13 in the hubs` 8 and 9 respec-V tively. The piston 5 is preferably provided with a flange 14 and with a base 15 by which it may be held in suitable supporting means, such as a vise, the jaws of which are indicated by 16, 17 in Fig. 1.
In one end of the body 1 is mounted a gage screw 20, which is threaded through one end of the body 1, and which may be screwed out or in to the body as desired, the gage screw being provided with a suitable milled head .21 by which it may be conven iently turned. `Y
Between the head 21 and the body-1 l prefer to insert, around the gage screw 20, a coiled spring Q2 which offers resistance to the turning of the head so as to prevent its jarring out of position during the use ofthe tool.
In practice the correct length of the valve SS S vSTEVENS & COMITANY. Lnnecrnnnnn.
1522i..v Serial No. i,031. Y
stem ishirst ascertained-by the use otra thi'clmessgage or the like, and the gage screw 2O is set to mark that length. And the valve stem to be lengthened is inserted in the gage and swaged or stretched lengthways between the pistonsf and 5, by striking piston l with a hammer, so as to drive it down toward 5. It the -swaging is done without adjusting the stem lengthwise, agro'ove or indentation will be formed around the stem, if it is turned slightly vbetween the Yblows on the piston t, such a groove being shown in Fig. 1.
The piston may be stretched at more than one point, by varying the distance to which it is inserted in the bore of the body. When the stem has been stretched to the desired eX- tent its end will meet the end of `the gage screw 20, when the head of the stem is against the opposite end of the body 1. The opening 30 through the body 1 permits the relation of the valve stem and gage screw to be observed.
It will be understood that details ot constructionmaybe modified, by the use of mechanical equivalents and the like, without departing from the spirit of as claimed. Y
Having thus described my invention, what claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a valve stem lengthener, the combi-k nation of an anvil, a body carried recipro-V cably thereby and provided with a valve stem supporting portion, and a cooperating hammer element. i
. 2. In a valve stem lengthener, the combination of an anvil, a body carried reciprocably'thereby and provided with a laterally extended valve stem supporting portion, and a cooperating hammer element.
'3. In a valve stem lengthener, the combination of an anvil, a body carried reciprocably thereby and provided with a valve stem supporting portion and with means for limiting reciprocation in both directions, and a cooperating hammer element.
4. In a valve stem-'lengthener, the c ombination of an anvil', a body carried recip-Y rocably thereby and provided with a portionV to maintain a valve stem in a straight line transversely of' the anvil while'being swedged. Y 5. In a valve Stem lengthener, the combination of a body having a stem channel -iny invention cooperating means forsimnlteneously swaging opposed portions o the valve stein.
7. ln :L valve stein lengthener, the Combination of vmeans for holding valve stem against lateral distortion, rneansfor" swag-Y ing one side of the valve stein, opposed niezrnsff-or swaging the oppositeside of the -valve stem, and eooperatinfr means disposed in linewith the valve stern, for @aging the extent of the lengthening operation.
