Description

J. KLINE, Jr., & V. KLINE.
Car Platform.
No. 14,665. Patented Apr. 15, 1856.
amruuto-m'm. C0.N.Y. (ossnm cs PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAS. KLINE, JR., AND SIMON V. KLINE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-PLATFORM BETWEEN RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,665, dated April 15, 1856.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JAMES KLINE, J r., of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and SIMON V. KLINE, of same place, have invented a new and useful Connecting Safety-Platform on Railroad-Cars Which Secures a Safe Passage from One Car to Another; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
Said connecting platform is made as follows, of wood or iron slats, particularly described in Figure 1 drawing.
The slats A in No. 1 section are framed into the crosshead D in such a manner as to slide into the space B of No. 2 section and the slats C of No. 2 section are framed into the cross D, so as to slide into the spaces E of No. 1 section, so that when the cars bunt together the sections will close in a measure and when the cars draw apart as far as the coupling will allow the said platform will draw apart in a measure also at the same time leaving and securing a perfectly safe passage from one car to the other.
The inside end of said sections has a thin band of iron F, F passing completely around, secured with screws, bolts, or rivets, in the manner described in the drawing, so as to allow them to shove up or draw apart as the cars may operate upon them. We attach one end of said platform to the cars in drawings to guard against the side vibration of the cars. The other end of said platform we connect to the car by means of a link not welded at one end, in order that if the car ever breaks these couplings the link will draw apart before breaking the platform elsewhere, and at the same time have sufficient strength to operate the platform as desired. The railing T, T is put on the platform in such a manner as to pass each other when the sections close or draw apart. The many accidents which have occurred between railroad cars has induced us to study on the subject.
What we claim as our invention is- The peculiar construction of a connecting safety platform, bet-ween railroad cars operating substantially as described in the drawings and specification.
JAMES KLINE, JR. SIMON V. KLINE.
