Description
R. STRIJDE. Safety Platforms for Railway Cars.
Patented Nov. 18, 18-73.
William: wvwm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD STRODE, OF GOATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-PLATFORMS FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,804, dated November 18, 1873; application filed April 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it.known that I, RIcHARn STRODE, of Ooatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Platform for Railroad-Oars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The invention consists in the improvement of car-platforms and their connections, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top View. I
In the drawing, A represents the truck that receives the car thereupon, and B the platform, which projects in front of the car, and which is connected by a coupling with the corresponding part of an adjacent car. There is usually a considerable space between the adjacent cars for allowing them to play on a joint, so that they may assume a position at an angle to each other when passing around a curve. Into this intervening space intoxicated and careless persons are liable to fall and be crushed or materially injured. 0 O are pieces used to prevent the cars from telescoping, while D is a pendent stop, to arrest the car and prevent it from tumbling over an embankment when suddenly arrested. 0 O are plates, which extend from the end of one platform and overlap the other, so that all danger of the foot or leg becoming wedged between the beveled portion of the ends of platform is effectually prevented.
It will be observed that these plates 0 also assist in preventing the cars from telescoping, while the lower plates, 0, also prevent the cars from going up too closely together by locking and stopping them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the end-beveled platforms B B, of the plates 0 0, extending from one platform and overlapping the other, as and for the purpose set forth.
RICHARD STRODE.
