Application led August 27, 1921.
To all w 710m it may concern Be it known that PHrLIIf R. DIXON, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, has invented new and useful Improvements in Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a gas burner for use in connection with stoves, boiler furnaces, and the like whereby a more complete and approximately perfect 'combustion of the fuel and therefore economy in the use thereof may be secured than is possible with the commercial types of burners andL more particularly to'provide a burner wherein a thorough mixing of the gas or fuel and air induced by an expansion thereof and therefore an increased activity of relative move ment of the elements thereof maybe secured` due to the heat of the combustion at the burner, to which the fuel and ugas are subjected in their approach to vthe comblestion point without diverting the heat due to such combustion from the purpose for which'it is primarily intended and hence without detrartirg from the efficiency of the burner as a heating agent; and with this object in View the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The` burner consistsl essentially of a burner head or tiplO which in the construction illustrated in Figures 1. and 2 is of substantially flat horizontal form having a plurality of burner orifices 11 and a mixing tube l2 in communication with the burner tip or head and arranged in the path of the fiame and heat generated at the `outer burner orifices so as to be maintained at a relatively high temperature to cause an expansion of the gas and air passlng therethrou h in its path to the burner head or tip, said seria No. 495,853.

The exposure of the mixture 'of gas and` air to the heat of the burne'inhead or tip not only predisposes the mixture \to better combustion by reason of the high temperature thereof but causes a more rapid molecular movement of the 'gas and air in'. the passage thereof through the mixing tube so that a more intimate mixture thereof is secured, such increased rapidity of molecu lar movement being incident to the expansionv thereof, and consequently when lthe mixture reaches the combustion point and is ignited the maximum efficiency is secured.
In the construction illustrated in Figure 3 the mixing tube 17 is correspondingly arranged in the pathof the heat at the comthe portion of the mixing tube within the furna-e 'being suitably protected fromr the direct contact of the flame by a suitable `shield 21 of 'fire'clay or itsy equivalent while being subject to heat of a degree sufficient' to effect the expansion and' hence efficient mixture' of thef gas and air of which the former is introduced into the mixing tube by the gas supply pipe 22/ fitted with lthe controlling valve 23. yThe air as in the ther form of the invention is admitted yat 24' by i induction.
