In the embodiment of the invention illus trated herewith, the tool is shown and described as employed for the purpose of bending down tongues which have been struck up from the metal portion of a seat frame for the purpose of bending the tongues in such a manner as to retain the apron in position relative to the frame. particularly applicable for use in the connection in which it is illustrated herewith, it is in no way confined to use with a seat frame, but is adapted to be employed in connectioirwifll any structure wherein metal tongues struck up from a portion of a sheet metal member areeapableof beingbent or' crimped in a manner similar to that illustrated herewith to retain or assist in retaining another element in proper position relative to the metal frame or for any other purpose. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a portion of a metal border frame such as is adapted to be employed as a border for a wire mesh 52 forming the base of a vehicle seat. The metal border frame 1 extends around the edge of-the seat and is provided upon its outer edgeportion with a groove 4 formed upon the upper face of the frame and adapted to extend throughout the entire length thereof, and an upstanding flange 5 located adjacent to and outwardly of the groove 4:. An apron 6 extending downwardly from the top portion of the seat has the lower edge thereof upturned as at 7 and this upturned edge portion may be stitched to the downwardly extending portion 6 asindicated at 8 in order to form a pocket extending along the lower edge of the apron which is adapted to receive a cord or rod 9, thus forming a bead upon the lower edge of the apron The lower edge portion of the apron 6, together with the cord or rod 9 carried thereby is positioned within the groove at formed in the outer edge of the framel, and secured therein by means of a plurality of tongues 10 struck up from the frame 1 at points adjacent to the inner edge of the groove 4:. After the lower edge portion of the apron 6 together with the bead carried thereby is positioned within the groove, the upwardly extending tongues 10 are crimped down upon the lower edge portion of the apron and the bead carried thereby in such a manner as to securely retain the lower edge portion of the apron in position relative to the frame and prevent separation of these parts.
The crimping tool illustrated herewith provides a ready and effective means for crimping the tongues 10 to bend the same into close engagement with the lower edge portion of the apron and prevent the same from becoming disengaged from the frame.
The crimping tool comprises a handle 11 provided with an angular offset portion 12 formed adjacent one end thereof, and preferably disposed at an angle of substantially 90 to the handle portion 11. The offset portion 12 is provided upon opposite sides with rounded shoulders 13 formed by cutting away a portion of the angular extension in such a manner as to leave a narrowed portion 14 extending outwardly from the rounded shoulders. The rounded shoulders are preferably so formed as to be in substantial alignment with each other transversely of the angular extension, and as shown in Figures II and III, these rounded shoulders are adapted to bear against the under surface of the frame when the tool is in operative position relative to the frame.
c I Vl1en the lower beaded portion of the apron is positioned within the groove formed in the outer edge of the border frame, the narrowed end of the angular portion of the tool is inserted in one of the openings 15 formed in the frame, in the position illustrated in Figure II, so that the rounded shoulders 13'will engage with the under surface of the frame and the narrowed part of the angular offset portion bear against the tongue 10. The tool is then turned. from the position shown in Figure II to the position shown in Figure III, whereby the tongue 10 is crimped down against the upper surface of the bead in such a manner as to securely retain the lower edge of tie apron between the tongue and the upwardly extending flange 5. It will be seen that the rounded shoulders 13 constantly provide a bearing for the tool against the under surface of the frame so as to furnish a suitable fulcrum about which the tool will pivot while bending down the tongue 10.
WVhile the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of con struction may be resorted to, and the preceding description is notto be construed as in any way limiting the use to which the struc provided with a pair of rounded shoulders located. at opposite sides thereof, and a reduced portion located between said shoulder and extending outwardly therefrom.

In a device of the class described, a handle, a laterally extending portion formed integral with the handle adjacent one end thereof, said laterally extending portion having its side edges cut away to form shoulders, and a narrow portion extending outwardly from the shoulders, said shoulders being rounded off on their sides remote from the handle.

handle, a portion bent at an angle of substantially 90 with the handle, said'bent portion having its outer edge reduced adjacent the end thereof to form rounded shoulders upon opposite sides thereof. 5.
