UNITED STATES I 1,463,7(52 PATENT OFFMJE.
JOSEPH W. JOHNSON AND JOHN W. NOLDE, OF NEWBURGH, NEW YORK.
COMBINED CURTAIN SUPPORT AND SHADE HOLDER.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JOSEPH WV. JOHNSON" and JOHN l/V. NoLDE, citizens of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Curtain Supports and ShadeHolders, of which the following ls a specification.
This invention relates to combined window shade and curtain supports.
Theobject of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted to fit windows of difiierent sizes and which may be secured to the window frames with one set of fasteners avoiding marring of the frame.
Another object is to provide a support of this character which may be constructed from sheet metal strips so that it may be manufactured with a minimum amount of material at a small cost and will be light, strong and durable in construction.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 representsa perspective view of the upper portion of a window frame with this improved support shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the support detached, the top broken out for convenience in illustration.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 4 is a front elevation with parts broken out and in section.
The support or hanger constituting this invention comprises three sections 1, 2 and 3, the sections 1 and 3 being designed to be mounted on the sides of the window frame shown at F and which are connected by the intermediate section 2 in a manner pres ently to be described.
The sections 1 and ,3 are made exactly alike except that they are right and left, one
being designed to be secured to the right hand side of the window frame andthe other to the left hand side, and hence it is thought necessary to describe one only in detail.
The frame engaging section 1 is composedof an L-shaped member 4 and a straight member 5 adjustably connected by a silde 6 to adapt the section to fit window frames 1, 1921. Serial No. 511,991.
of different depths. The straight section or member 5 has an outwardly bowed portion 7 near its outer end which is apertured as shown at 8 to receive a shade roller pintle and on opposite sides of said bowed portion, the member 5 is apertured as shown at 9 to receive fastening elements for securing the sections to the window frame. The members 4 and 5, as well as the other portions'of the hangers are constructed of strap metal. One arm 10 of the member 4 is designed to lie against the outer face of the window frame as is shown clearly in Fig. 1, and has its free end folded inwardly as shown at 1113 form a socket to receive an upstanding strip 12 which is riveted or otherwise secured in said socket. Thi up standing member 12 is also constructed of strap metal'and is designed to support one end of section 2 which constitutes the cur tain holder. The upright member 12 may be of any desired length according to the height it is desired to space the section 2 above sections 1 and 3 and has its upper end folded downwardly and then upwardly to form a seat 13 to receive one end of section 2 as will be presently more fully described.
Section 2 which is supported at its opposite ends in the upstanding members 12 of the side frame engaging sections 1 and dow frames of different widths.
The members 14 and 15 are exactly alike except that one is the right and the other the left hand member and each is composed of a strip of metal with its outer end bent into substantialy U-shaped form with the terminal 17 thereof adapted to be inserted in the seat 13 of one of the upstanding members 12. The U-shaped formation of the outer ends of the members 14 and 15 spaces the body portions thereof in advance of the sections 1 and 3 and by the adjustment of the members 4 relatively to the members 5, the side sections 1 and 3 and section 2 may be positioned toward and away from the window frame at the will of the user so that the curtain suspended therefrom may be hung at any desired distance from the window frame. It is of course understood that engaging sections 1 and 3 provides for the disassembling of the parts and their storage in a small space when to be shipped or stored.
In the use of this hanger, the onlyfast'eners necessary for securing it to the frame are those which are inserted through the apertures 9 of the members off sections 1 and 3", and when they are so connected and the members l adjusted on members 5 so their arms 10 engage the outer faces of the frame, they will be securely held with the employment of a minimum number of fasteners and thereby avoid marring of the frame as 7 much as possible.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the'spec'ification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle of the inventionorisa'crificing any of its advantages.
A bracket comprising a frame engaging section consisting of an L-shaped member forming an inner and an outer arm, a rear- Wardly extending supporting ,memtger having an apertured bow-shaped gpor'tion intermediate its ends and an apertured inner terminal, means for slidably connecting said supporting member to said inner arm, said outer arm having its outer terminal ortion folded upon itself, a Vertically disposed member secured between said folded outer terminal portion and having itsfupper terminal portion bent upon itself to provide a support for the reception of one end ofa curtain support.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures hereto.
