Description

June 25, 1923.
J. KING WAX SPREADER Filed July 12 1921 Patented June 26, 1923.
UNITED STATES PAT WAX SlEhZRlLADER.
Application filed m 12,
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that James KING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, has invented new and useful Improvements in Na r; Spreaders, of which i the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient means for spreading and polishing wax on floors and similar surfaces to avoid the inconvenience incident to the use of brushes or like manually operable means commonly employed in this connection, not only with a view to securing a better result in the more even spreading of the wax but to accomplish the object in less time than is possible under the ordinary conditions and with less effort upon the part of the operator, in that the latter is permitted to maintain a standing posture while operating the same; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the ac companying drawings, wherein *igure 1 is a perspective view of a spreader embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View of the same.
Figure 3 is an inverted view of the head with the plunger omitted.
Figure 4: is a detail view of the plunger,
The device consists essentially of an elon-- gated head 10 having a depending flange 11 throughout its perimeter fitted with a felt pressure member 12 on the bottom edges thereof, the space bounded by the felt pressure element and the flanges being occupied by a plunger 13 having a stem 14 extending through an opening 15 in the top of the head and fitted with a thumb nut 16. A coil spring 17 is arranged on the stem to yieldingly impel the plunger downward.
The head is adapted to be connected with a suitable handle 18 by means of a yoke or Y 19 having pivotal connection as indicated at 20 with the ends of the head so that the latter is adapted in the movement of the device to follow the surface of the floor or other object which is being polished while. the angular position of the handle may be varied at the convenience of the operator.
In operation it is preferable to extend a rubbing cloth 21, over the face of the head including the felt pressure element and the exposed surface of the plunger, and to facilitate such arrangement a retaining ring 22 1921. Serial No. 424,047.
is fitted against a shoulder formed adjacent the reduced lower portion of the flange 11 and serves to hold the rubbing cloth in proper position.
The surface of the plunger may be arranged either flush wit-h or slightly above the exposed edge surface of the felt pressure element, or may be projected to hold the cloth in contact with the surface of the floor, ac cording to whether or not a hard or relatively soft finish is to be applied to the floor, said plunger otherwise serving as a means of reinforcing the pressure member and maintaining it in proper position with relation to the head during the rubbing operation. The plunger may be adjusted from time to time as may be required by the character of the work to be performed. Since the rubbing cloth is primarily the means of application of the wax to the floor, the cloth is saturated with wax if that of liquid character is used, prior to the application of the cloth to the head. If the hard wax is employed it may be applied to the rubber cloth either before or after the attachment of the latter to the head.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A wax spreading and floor rubbing implement having a head provided with a depending flange extending throughout its perimeter, a felt pressure element secured to the lower edge of said flange, a plunger arranged within the space bounded by said pressure element and flange and movable toward and from the head, a rubbing cloth disposed in spanning relation with the surface of the pressure element and plunger, and means for adjusting the plunger to vary its position with reference to said rubbing cloth.
2. A wax spreading and floor rubbing implement having a head provided with a depending fiange extending throughout its perimeter, a felt pressure element secured to the lower edge of saidflange, a plunger arranged within the space bounded by said pressure element and flange and movable toward and from the head, a rubbing cloth disposed in spanning relation with the surface of the pressure element and plunger, the plunger having a stem extended through a guide opening in the head, a thumb nut engaged with the extremity of the stem and bearing on top of the head, and a spring in surrounding relation to the stem and com pressed between the top of the plunger and the under face of the head. r
3. A Wax spreading and floor rubbing in1-.
perimeter, a rubbing cloth spanning the free edges of the flange and detachably secured to the head, a plunger mounted in the space bounded by the flange and bearing against the cloth to tension the latter, adjustable means for the plunger, and means for yieldingly holding the plunger in tensiona-ble relation With the rubbing cloth in various posltions of achustment of the plunger.
Intestimony whereof he affixes his signature.
J AMES KING.
