Description

Patented. .lune l2, E923.
SH 1E. BEMIS, 0F.PHELADELPHIA,'PENNSYLVANIA.
CORSET.
Application filed .Tune 2S, 11922. Serialwltl'o. 571,374.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, SARAH E. BEMIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia. in the county of Philadelphia' and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Corsets, of 'which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to'corsets, and has for its object to provide means whereby ladies may carry valuables about their person with perfect safety. To this end l have provided the corset with orne or more pockets onits inner side; the pockets being of'such size and shape as to carry passports, money and other valuables.
Another object of the invention is to attach the pocket to the corset in such manner that the latter will not be disligured by rows of stitching or the like.
@ther objects and advantages oft-he invention w'ill be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, vin which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the corset in use. y Figure 2 is an elevation of the corset per se., the pocket flapbeing shown in open posit-ion. I
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the pocket taken on line k3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral 1 designates a corse-t of the type which extends from the .Waist line downwardly, .although the invention may be applied to other types as well. Each half of the corset is composed of three panels 2, 3 and 4;, the panels being defined by# the stiffening strips or ribs 5 seamed along the edges of the panels.
' In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, each of the central panels 3 is extended below the body of the corset and folded inwardlyupon itself to form a wall 6 of the pocket, the other wall of the pocket being formed by a portion of the panel 3, Each side edge of the turned over portion 6 is placed under the rib seam and stitched thereto, as indicated in Figure 2,
thereby forming the pocket without disfiguring the corset. A flap 7 is stitched to the panel 3 and is provided with a fastening means 8 to co-operate with a complementary. lfastening means 9 on the wall of the pocket.
As the pocket Lis located on the interior of the .corset and is exposed to moisture due to perspiration, which is liable to damage the Contents of the pocket, it has been found advisable to employ a waterproof lining, as indicatedat l0. This lining l() may be of rubber, rubberized fabric or similar waterproof material.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that l have combined with a corset one or more moisture-proof pockets which are concealed on the interior thereof and provide an extremely safe means for carrying money or other valuables. Furthermore, it should be noted that the exterior of the corset is in nowise marred or disfigured by the attachment of the pocket thereto.
In accordance with the patent statutes, ll have described what I now believe to be thebest embodiment, of the invention, but
ll do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myselfvor the scope of the invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such l aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
What I Claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
1. A corset composed of panels of flexible material, stiifening ribs seamed along the edges of the panels, one of said panels being extended below the/body ofthe corset and folded upon itself to form a pocket, the side edges of the folded portion being stitched by the seams which hold the stiffening ribs.
2. A corset composed of panels of flexible material` stifl'ening ribs seamed along the edges of the panels. one of said panels being extended below the body of the corset and folded inwardly upon itself to form a pocket on the inner wall of the corset, the side edges of the folded portion being stitched by thel SARAH E. BEMIS E. E).
