' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1919.
Application filed January 16, 1918, Seriallto. 212,140. Renewed May 12, 1919, Serial No. 296,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHARINE S. BAN- NING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented in the subjoined detail description.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention. j
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bag constructed in accordance with this invention as it appears when collapsed.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the other side of the bag in Fig. 1 as it appears when collapsed.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the bag distended.
Fig.- 4: is a sectional elevation on line an -w, Fig. 1 showing the bag distended.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail of one of the lower corners of the bag.
The bag has two sides 1, 2. which may be constructed, if desired, of a single piece of any suitable material, and the material may be waterproof if desired. The piece of ma terial from which the sides 1, 2 are made is preferably folded and the side edges are joined to form seams 3. The material is doubled and folded inat the lower ends of the seams 3 as indicated at 4 and stitches 5 Fig. 6 is an'enlarged sectional detail on are run transversely to the seams 3 at the lower ends thereof to fasten the folded in portion 4 in place. The free upper edge of the side 2 is provided'with a handle 6 a strip of material, the end portions 7 of said 5U formed by the intermediate slack portion of strip forming a binding along the greater portion of the free upper edge of the side 2,
The free upper margin of the side 1 is pro vided with spaced flaps 8 and fastened along said margin are the end portions 9 of a stri of material, said strip having an interme iate slack portion forming a handle 10.'
for holding thefiaps Sand a snap fastener 13 for'holding the flap 11. Thus the flaps 8 of the side 1 are fastened to the side 2 and the flap 11 of the side 2 extends between the flaps 8 and is fastened to the side 1.
The outside of the side 1 may be provided with a pocket formed between said side and a piece 14 which may be closed by a flap 15 fastened to the pocket piece by any suit.- able means as, for instance, a snap fastener 16.
The inside of the side 1 may be provided with a pocket or pockets formed between the instance-shown the pockets'll and 17 are substantially of the same size and the margins thereof register with one another and the stitches 18 fasten both the piece 17 and the piece 14: in place.
Additional fasteners 19 may be used to hold the sides 1, 2 in closed position anc these fasteners are positioned at the free upper margins of said sides. A lining.20. is shown 1n Fig. 4 and such lining may be omitted if desired.
It is readily seen that in practice to open the bag the flaps 8 and 11 will be unfastened .so that access can be had to the interior of the bag. To close the bag the flap 11 will be the handle 6, 10 being secured to opposite sides of the bag and owing to there being flaps foreach of the sides the bag may be very securely fastened and when held by the handles 6, rough usage without coming open.
I claim:
1. A bag comprising side members, strips fastened to the side members respectively and forming handles, spaced flaps on one of the side members, a flap on the other side member between the first named flaps and adapted to extend through the handle of the side member having the spaced flaps, and
means to .detachably fasten the flaps of each side member to the other side member.
2. A bag comprising side members fastened.. together along only a portion of the 10 will Withstand considerable said-side and a piece of material. 17 which is fastenedto the side 1 by stitches 18. In
inserted through the handle 10 and fastened. and the flaps 3 will be secured. Owing to margins, strips having their end portions fastened along portions of the free portion of the margins and having their intermediate portions slack to formihandles, a flap on one of the side members at the free margin thereof on each sideof the handle of said side member, a flap on the other side member at the free margin thereof adapted to extend through the handle of the first named side member, and means to detach- 10 ably fasten the flaps of each side member to the other side member.
Signed at Los Angeles, California, this 7th day of January, 1918.
