srron LAST.
Application filed July 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn W. Bnocn- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, in; the county of Hamilton a and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Shoe Last, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein is of the same general class described in my two co- 1o pending applications, in which the general object is to provide a last which has a re newable toe which may be ohanged'as often as the style changes without having to re new the entire last. In the invention described herein the particular object in view has been to produce a last in which the re newable toe is attached to the body of the last in a manner such that greater strength is obtained than heretofore so that the last will be enabled to withstand more rough usage.
This and other objects are attained in the last. described in the specification and illustrated in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a partial plan view of the toe portion of a last embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing in a somewhat detached manner, a new toe and the body portion of the last.
Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation of a last embodying my invention.
Fig. t is a transverse sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2.
In the construction I have chosen to illus- 3 trate as an embodiment of my invention two side dowels 5 and 6 are inset into the sides of the body and toe. A centrally located dowel 7 is mortised into the body of the last as Well as into the toe. I have shown 40 a slightly reduced shank 8 for first securing the dowel in the body portion in order to leave an enlarged head 9 for entrance into the toe, although this condition may be re- 1922. Serial No. 574,234.
I versed or the dowel made of uniform mensions from end to end, if desired. The fastening of the dowel 7 in the body portron as well as in the toe is preferably accomplished by small vertically extending dowels 10 and 11 passing through dowel T as well as the wood of the body and toe lying above and below the dowel, in additlon to glue. The side dowels 5 and 6 are secured in their mounting slots by means of glue only.
An advantage of my improved construc tion over the other renewable or changeable toe last constructions is that the dowel, while strengthening the joint between the toe and body by reason of its presence alone, is'also reenforced by the presence of a certain amount of wood of the body and toe, lying above and below the dowel, as for example, at 12 and 18 in Fig. 4.
Thus by reason of my construction, the end and cross grain of the toe portion of all lasts, is strengthened and the last made more capable of rough usage, at the same time that its toe is made a practical and changeable feature of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is v A shoe last comprising a body, a renewable toe portion, and means for securing the toe portion to the body portion, said means comprising a central dowel recessed into the body and toe portion, the wood of the body and toe entirely surrounding the dowel, and side dowels recessed into the sides of the body and toe.
In witness whereof, I afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH w. BROCKMAN.
