J. O. WINKS HA IR CURLER Filed Aug. 24 1921 f 7 4 1 21 1x 4 f iajv IN V EN TOR Ja/m' l7. Mun:
A TTORNE Y JOHN D. WINKS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSKGNOB 6F ONE- BRADLEY L. BENSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR CUBLEE.
Application filed August 24, 1921. Serial no. 94,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JonN O. \VINKS, a citizen of the United! States of America, residing at 1014 Balboa Building, San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, hasinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an improved hair curler and relates particularly to that class of curlers used by women to engage a coil or curl of hair over night, to produce a wavy effect when the curlers are removed and .the hair combed out.
The objects of the invention include;
1. The provision of a curler for over night use which is small, compact, and which is made entirely of flexible rubber, in order to prevent injury to the hair or discomfort to the wearer.
2. The provision of a non-metallic curler so constructed that the finished article can be sold for a few cents.
3. The provision of ahair curle-rwhich is inconspicuous when in use and which will have no rigid projections protruding from the head to menace the eyesight or comfort of a bedfellow.
In this specification and the annexed] drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description it is desired to cover the invention in whatever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying one sheet of drawings;
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my rubber curler.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line IIIIII.
Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line- IVIV. FFig. 5 is a view of the reverse side of Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a fragment of rubber tubing cut in a configuration suitable for making my curler in the preferred form shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive and showing a rubber band! positioned thereon for permanent engagement therewith.
Fig. 7 is an end view of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8
section, to form a tongue adapted to be bent as indicated in dotted ines,'in Fig. 6, and in serted within the casing 1 to the position shown in Fig. 4.
I prefer to cut away the wall of the tubing, in substantially circular form, a portion on each side as indicated at 3, to facilitate the bending operation and to better engage a continuous elastic band 4.
When the tongue 2 is inserted in the casing 1 as shown in Fig. 4, it serves a'twofold purpose; it reinforces and adds rigidity to the tube 1 and secures the rubber band 4 against withdrawal. The frictional engagement of the tongue 2 a ainst the'inner wall of the casing 1 makes it difiicult to remove the tongue but still leaves it possible to open to replace the band 4 when it becomes broken or worn.
The apertures 3 serve to give a trim appearance to one end of the curler when made up, and also engage the band 4 in such a manner that no amount of direct pull on the band 4. will withdraw the tongue 2.
The end of the tubular casing 1 remote from the rubber band 4, is bifurcated as indicated at 6 and preferably inclined to facilitate the entrance of the elastic band 4 for engagement as shown in Figs. 5 and 8.
In order to obviate the tendency to split the body portion or casing 1 when the band 4 is under tension, I prefer to perforate the wall as shown at 7, Figs. 2 and 4, at the end of the cut 6. 4
The operation of my curler is as follows:
The device as shown in Fig. 1 is held in one hand and a strand 8 of hair is coiled about the body portion 1 as shown in Fig. 8. The band 4 is then stretched and engaged in the perforation 7 to hold the strand of hair in place until the curler is removed.
I claim:
1. A hair curler comprising a flexible tubular member, a tongue member integral with said tubular member and adapted to be inserted in said tubular member, and an elastic band engaged by said tongue member so inserted, and means on said tubular memwhen so inserted, her for removably engaging said elastic 2. A hair curler comprising a flexible band at the end remote from that to which 10 tubular member, a tongue member integral said band is secured. 5 with said tubular member and adapted to be In testimony whereof I am); my signature.
inserted in said tubular member, an elastic JOHN 0. WINKS.
