Application filed March 24,1921. Serial No. 455,336.
; To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownfthat I WILMAR F. Lnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement vinPortable Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, andexactdescription.
This invention relates to improvements in portable lamps, and in particular to a certain novel construction ,of-the' lamp base embodying an improved means for coupling" together certain parts. v
The improvements'can be best understood from the following detailed description, in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred construction, and in which,
Figure 1 represents a lamp, in vertical sect-ion;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the base; and
Figure 3 is a detail view, showing in side elevation the top portion of the base and the pivotal. connection for the lamp.
The lamp comprises a base portion 1, pivot 3, which connects the base with the switch socket 5, which receives the lamp bulb 6, the latter supporting a shade 8. The base 1 is preferably made of sheet metal and may be of conical form as shown. "The base is hollow, and a strip of metal 7, which may be provided at or near its ends with angularly bent ears 9, 10, is located within the base.
with the base The cars 9 and 10 are for the purpose of supporting lamp-suspending devices 12 and 14 adapted to be folded out, when desired, in suitable position, for sustaining the lamp from a nail or screw projecting from a vertical wall, or from a horizontal rail, at will. These lamp suspending devices form no part of the present invention but are merely described for a better understanding of the improvements which are claimed'herein.
The metal strip 7 will be hereinafter referred to as a holder inasmuch as it performs the function of holding or supportingthe lamp-sustaining members 12 and 14. The upper portion of the sheet metal shell. constituting the base 1 is occupied by a weight 13 which isshaped to exactly 'fit within the base, and is provided with a central vertical perforation to receive a long screw 15 having'a taperin head 15, and its opposite end threaded. is screw extends through a perforation in 'a horizontaliportion of'the holder and receives aclamping nut 17, which serves'to fasten together; the
several parts. The pivot 3 for conruectin'g the upper portion of the lampwith the base is composed of a lower member preferably? made of sheet metal, and having upstand 111g: spaced lugs. "The lugs v4, 4, receiveb'e tween them a bifurcated member'18fhaviiig s a' threaded shank 21, and being perforated toaline with perforations in the'lugs 4, 4; to'r'ece-ive a pivot bolt 19, which holds these parts together with capacity'forf swinging movement in a verticalplaneL' The blankfrom which the lugs 4,4, are formed is provided, in its process of manufacture, with two opposite, laterally extending lugs 4 4 located preferably at. right angles to the upstanding lugs 4, 4, and bent downwardly to I enter recesses in the upper portion of the weight13,.as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing. The lugs 4 4*, also pass through slits or openings in the upper part of the base 1, and the screw 15 passes,
through central apertures in the base of the blank from which the lugs are .formed,in
the top portion of the sheet metal lamp base- 1, the weight 13, and the holder 7 whereby i when the nut 17 is applied to the threaded end of the bolt and turned thereon these several parts will be firmly clamped together in.
the proper positions which they should occupy in the finished lamp.
It will be seen that by the construction I described a very simple arrangement is provided forholding together, by a single member, the lower portion of the lamp-pivoting element. the lamp base, the weight, and the holder for the lamp sustaining means. Engagement of the lugs 4 4 with walls of the recesses in the weight prevents rotation of the pivot 3 relative to the base and weight,-
which is important with the construction ing books 12 and 14 in the plane of moveits plane of movement will be correct relativeto the hook,
Having described the invention what is claimed is: i
1. In adevice of the class described, the combination with alamp base, ofa-weight located in the upper portion of said base, a
lamp pivoting member'on said base, means on said lamp pivoting Inemberengaging the base and weight to prevent relative rotati-on of said parts, and a single fastening gether member for securing the Several parts to- 2.111 a device ofthe class described, thecombination owith a hollow sheet metal base,
a weight in the upper portion thereof, a lamp pivoting member comprising upstanding lugs to receive a co-operating pivoting .member, means projecting from the first mentioned lamp pivoting member and en- :gaging said base andweight, and a screw passing through the lamp pivoting member base and weight provided with clamping means for securing the several parts to- Y 7 gether. I
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow lamp base, a
K weight located in the upper portion of said base, a lamp pivoting member comprising spaced upwardly extending lugs, and spaced downwardly extending lugs, the latter passingthrough apertures in said base and seated in recesses in said weight, and a clamping screw extending through'the-lamp pivoting member, base and weight, and arranged to fasten said. parts together, i V M 7 4:. In a. device offthe. class described, the combination with a hollow sheet metal base,
provided with spaced apertures at its top,
a weight within said base and provided with recesses in alinement with said apertures, a lamp-pivoting member sustained uponsaid base and having downwardly extending lugs entering'said apertures and said recesses, a
holder within the base and provided witha'.
portion fitting against the lower portion ofsaid weight, and a. clamping screw extenda 17th day of March A.
