UNITED STATES b 1,454,146 PATENT I -W ROGER w. ANDREWS, or PITTSBU GH, rENNsYLvANIA, Assre o r0 ORTHERN,
EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION or ,IPENN SYLVAN IA.
To all whom it'mag concern:
Be it known that I, ROGER W.- ANDREws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county. of-Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Feed-Water Regulators, of which the. fol- This invention relates to apparatus for controlling the flow of water-to boilers, and
this application is a division of'my copend ing application, Serial No. 238,765, filed June 7, 1918.
In the operation of steam boilers I have found it desirable, in the use of feed-water regulators operating the feed-water valve of the boiler, to vary more or less,f'at times, the opening of the valve, independently of the regulator, and witlioutinterfering w th the normal operation o-fthe' regulator on the valve. l I
For instance, it has been found in practice, in feeding water to boilers, particularly those, of large capacity or comprising several drums, that the water level in different portions of the boiler, particularly in different drums, may Vary verymaterially, due partly to irregular conditions of the fire which causes variations in the temperature of the water. By the ordinary method of controlling the feed-water valve by a single regulator connected to one drum water will be fed into that drum without reference to the elevation of the waterin the other drum.
One of the objects of this invention is to cause both drums to assist inthe regulation of the feed-water valve, so that if the water in either becomes high or low the valve will be operated accordingly.
Of the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a boiler having three drums and two feedwa ter regulators operating the feed-water valve,v which embodies the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the feed-Water valvev and the imme-- diate operating means along'the line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3 of Figure 2; Fig. 4 is a section along-the line H of Fig. 1.
Any suitable type of feed-water regulator may be used, yet, for the purpose of illustrating my invention, I prefer the type which is fully shown and described in the Patent No. 1,1?i883 i su d to meJuly 21,
BOILER FEED-WATER, REGULATOR.
1915. In this particular instance the. regulators-are shown at the same elevation, and inclination and length; but-it should ;be
understood that unlike regulators may be application filed August 25, I i i v as Y trolling lever 73 and tube 7l -oontrolling lever 74, in a suitable mannen Tube is -j connected by pipes 75 and 76 with the re-,
.mote drum 77 of the boiler, andtube 71 is connected, by means ofpipes 78 and 79, with the adjacent drum 80 of the boiler. tubes are operatively connected in any suitable manner to the-same feed-water valve- 82 in thepipe 88 which delivers water to the lower portion of the drum 80.
The valve 82, whichjI prefer to use'with I i has a seat 85. These two members "are Both this system, comprises a plunger 84 which tudinal movement, and they have ports 86 shown in Fig. 3, the ports are entirely I closed. Also relative longitudinal movement will vary the openings in the ordinary manner. I l I I prefer 1n this part cular case to operativelyjconnect the tubes 70 and 71 to the valve 82 in the following manner: Tub 71 is operatively connected tot-he stem 92 0f plunger 84. This connection is made by means of the lever 74: a rod 88 and a weighted be seen by this that, as the tube 71 expands,
th plunger 84 will be given a. longitudinal 1 movement. And tube 72 is operatively connected to the same stem 92 by' means of the lever 7 3 rod 90 and a weighted arm 91 fixed to the stem 92. Bythis arrangement, when the tube 72 expands the valve plunger will be given a rotational movement, it being understood that the end 94 of the, lever 89 is rotatably connected to the plunger stem 92. e
As a consequence, whenever the water-level in the remote drum 77 varies, it will have an effect on the feed-water valve in addition to lever 89 pivoted to thefframe 93. It will the normal effect of the ordinary feed-water regulator 71 which is controlled in the Ql-dit I nary bl h drum 80.;
mounted for relative and rotational longi 7 Although I have described with much particularity the specific feed-water regulator system which I prefer, yet I wish it understood that other types and forms of feed water regulators may be used, and various other modifications in the system, may be made by those skilled in the art to produce substantially the same results without departing from th scope of my invention as disclosed by the following claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a boiler, two feedwater regulators. and a feed-water valve, said valve comprising a plunger and a seat therefor, said plunger and seat being relatively movable rotationally and longitudinally, the first of said feed-water regulators being operatively connected with said boiler and with said valve and arranged to move said plunger and seat relatively longitudinally, and the second of said feed-water regulators being, operatively connected with said boiler at a portion-oil said boiler remote from the'point of connection of said first regulator, said second regulator being also operatively connected with said valve and adapted to move saidplunger and seat relatively rotationally, said splunger and seat when in one relative positioni'orming an opening through said valve, and said opening being varied as said plunger and seat are moved relatively either rotationally or longitudinally.
Y 2. The combination of a boiler, a feedwater valve for said boiler, said valve having a plunger, a feed-water regulator operatively connected with said boiler and with said valve and being arranged to move the valve plunger to vary the opening through said valve, and a second feedswate'r regu- )luralit of drums a teed-water valve for saidboiler, said valve having a plunger and a seat therefor, a teed-water regulator operatively connected with one drum of said boiler and with said valve and arranged to vary the relative positions of the valve plunger and its seat in order to vary the opening through said valve, and a second teed-water regulator operatively connected with another drum of said boiler and with positions of the plunger and seat independently of said first mentionedifeed-watcr regulator. v l I i In testimony wliereot, I hereunto set my hand. a I v noeER W.
