FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,342, dated January 1, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WALDEMAR OFELDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Feed Water Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others IO skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to automatic feed-regulating devices for boilers,and particularly to feed-water regulators of the type operated by expansion and contraction of an expansible member under the influence of the variations of heat due to the variation of water-level.
My invention consists in the novel construction of the feed-water-regulating device.
The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction of feed-water regulators and to render the same entirely automatic in their operation and readily adjustable. This object is attained in the in- 2 5 vention herein described, and illustrated in V the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification, which drawing shows a central vertical section of. a Watertube boiler provided with my feed-water regu- 0 lator.
In the drawing, A designates a steam-drum, and B a water-drum. These drums are connected by spiral pipe-coils 0 within the combustion-chamber of the boiler.
5 D designates a burner adapted for burning liquid fuel, but in its stead any other device for generating heat may be substituted. The combustion-chamber is inclosed by a casing E, from which rises the funnel F. i
G designates a perforated circulating-pipe within the steam-drum A.
H and I designate other circulating-pipes, by which pipe G is connected with the waterdrum B. Said pipe Gis provided on its lower side with a number of perforations K K and on its upper side with one or more perforations L. Within it is an expansible rod or tube M, formed of copper or other suitable material. At the right-hand end of the tube G said expansible memberM is screw-threaded and passes through a screw-threaded opening in a plug N, closing that end of the tube G. At the left-hand end of the boiler the expansible member M passes through a suitable guide 0 and engages the feed-valve, as hereinafter described.
P designates the feed-pipe. It is connected to a valve-casing Q, itself connected to the elbow R, connecting circulating-pipes H and G. \Vithi-n the valve-casing Q is a valveplug S and a spring T, tending to keep the plug seated. The end of the expansible member M rests in a socket in the valve-plug S. There is no positive connection between the valve-plug and the expansible member, and hence when said member contracts the valve is seated independently of said member by the springT or by the water-pressure behind it. Expansion of the member M causes the valve, to open, however.
The normal water-level of the boiler is approximately that of the expansible member M. When the water is at such level in the drum Ait will surround the member M, and the length of the latter will then be such that the valve S will be closed; but when the water-level has fallen below rod M steam entering through the opening L and surrounding said rod will expand the same, so as to open the feed-valve and admit the water to the boiler. As soon as the water-level has risen sufficiently to submerge the rod M the temperature. of the latter falls, the rod contracts, and the spring T or the water-pressure behind the valve closes the latter, so shutting off the supply of feed-water.
By rotating the expansible member M by means of hand-wheel V the degree of opening of the feed-valve may be varied as desired.
Having thus completely described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a feed-water regulator, the combination, with a chamber adapted to communicate with the steam and Water spaces of a boiler, of an expansible member within said chamber, and adj ustably mounted at one end so that it may be adjusted in position lengthwise, and means at the other end of said expansible member, and adapted to be operated thereby, for regulating the supply of feedwater as said member expands and contracts.
2. In a feed-Water regulator, the combination, with a chamber adapted to communicate with the steam and water spaces of a boiler, and having within it an expansible member fixed at one end and adapted to expand and contract with variations of Waterlevel, of a feed-pipe, and a valve interposed between the same and said chamber, and having; a valve-plug adapted to be operated by the expansion of said expansible member.
In a feed-water regulator, the combination, with a chamber adapted to communicate with the steam and water spaces of a boiler, and having within it an expansible member fixed at one end of said chamber and extending through the latter to the other end thereof, of a feed-pipe at said other end of said chamber, a valve interposed between said feed-pipe and chamber and having a valve-plug against which said expansible member abuts, and a spring for seating said valve-plug when said member contracts.
4. In a boiler, the combination, with steam and water drums, a chamber within said steam-drum and in communication with the steam and water spaces thereof, circulatingpipes connecting the ends of said chamber with the Water-drum, and an expansible member Within said chamber, of a feed-pipe, a valve at one end of said chamber and interposed between the same and said feed-pipe, and adapted to be operated by the expansion and contraction of said expansible member.
