Description

Paieme Apt. 24, 1923.
y 1,453,039 PATENT OFFICE.
yHARRY H. CHINSKY AND EMIL HONSTETTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPARK PLUG.
Application iled pril 10, 1920. Serial No. 372,823.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that we, HARRY H. CHrNsItY, aicitizen of the United States, residing 1n Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, and- EMIL HoNsTE'r'rEn a citizen of the United States, residing in iBrooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York,
have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs,` of which the following is a specification.'
The objects of this invention are to provide a jump spark plug inwhich the spark is intensified due to the gap or space in its path of travel and delivered with an increased eii'ect.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting thel relative distance between the contacts and also the length of gap through which the current passes.
Another object is to provide a transparent casing` obtaining a sight feed7 effect whereby the spark in passing from one portion to another of the .conductor is plainly visible,
'and to provide means for cushioning and heat insulating the casing.
These objects! are 'attained by the novel construction andl combination of parts hereinafter desc-ribed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a spark plug made in vaccordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken Athrough the center of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view ,taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the metallic body of the plug, the same having a reduced step 11 from which extend a screw threaded stem 12 engageable in the motor head or like part where sparks are desired.
The upper portion ofthe body is surmounted by a hexagonal head 14 suited to receive a wrench in engaging the body in operative position.
containing, inl its lower portion, screwthreads receptive of a clamp ring 22, and the upper part of the cap is formedto present an inwardly extending ring or seat 23.
A porcelain insulator 25 is formed with a body portion suited to the conoidal chamber 15 and a cylindrical upper portion 26, the same rising from the inverted base 27 of the insulator, which is level with the bottom of the chamber 17, and disposed over these surfaces is a washer 28 clamped by the ring 22.
Formed with the ring 22 is an upwardly -and inwardlycurved casing 30, terminating in a raisedlhexagonal element 31 containing a central opening for the portion 26 of vthe insulator.
This insulator has a central longitudinal `passage to which is fitted a metallic sleeve with an expanded, curved base 41, the same resting on an annular seat formed with the casing 30, a packing ring 42 of asbestos being interposed between, while between the element 41V and seat 23 is a similar packing 43.
Thus as the cap 2O is tightened in the body of the plug, the casing 40 istightly but yieldingly held and due to the asbestos being a non-conductor of heat, breakage of the 'glass is prevented. it will also be seen that upon clamping the casing`40, the washer 28 and insulator are sition.
The upper end of the casing 40 is contracted in the manner of an ordinary glass bottle and provided 'with a cap 45 having a neck 46 engaging a. head 47 drilled and suited to receive a stem 49 which may be clamped by the lock nut 28, and which, at its inner end, carries a spherical head 50 registering with the head 38, the arrangement being such that these heads are relatively adjustable as to distances apart, thereby controlling the length of the spark as it passes between.
also firmly secured in poros It will'be understood that the usual electricalconnections are made with the extending stem 49 and body 10, and that the general assemblage is of the usual character as is also the purpose of: the invention.
Having thus described our invention and set forth the peculiar manner of its construction and improvements embraced therein, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
A spark plug comprising a body, an insulator therein, a ring,r above said insulator, a glass casing, means for clamping said casing to said ring, non-conducting, yielding packings between said casing and said ring`v a sleeve in said insulator, a sectional conductor in said sleeve, each section being independently adjustable longitudinally, a fixed terminal at the inner end-ot said body. and an adjustable terminal engaged at the outer end of said casing.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification.
HARRY u. cHiN'sKY. minJ HoNsTETTER.
