To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, EDWARD D. Mourns, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident ofthe city of Chicago, countyof Cook, and State of Illinois, have'inv'ented certain'new and useful Improvements in Seam Pressers for Shoe Uppers, of which the following 1 a specification.
This invention relates to seam pressers'for shoe uppers, and has for its object the pro vision of a device of this. character adapted to press seams of varyingthickness neatly and expeditiously.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Theuinvention consists .of a supporting table i1 of any suitable kind. Mounted on thetable1 is abase member int-he form of a-casting- 2 of any suitable material, and 1n said casting there is preferably prov1ded a groove 3 adapted to snugly accommodate an arm 4 which is swingingly mountedon the rear. end of said casting 2 by means of a pin a sectional view on the line 55 5transfi-xing projecting lugs6 on said casting as showninFig. 1. The arm ais non mally resiliently urgedto'inoperative posi-' tion by means of a tension spring 7 suitably securedto the-arm 1 at one end and having itsopposite end secured to an extension 9 on thecasting 2. The arm 1 is adapted to fit snugly 'in-the groovev3in the casting 2 -to hold same rigid when in operative position, and isretained in such position by means of a spring heldlatch 10 which is adapted to be retractedwby pressure onthe footstreadle 10' to :permit'th'e, outward swinging of the arm- 1 1.- The arm 4: preferably, supports at its outer end a housing 11 of any suitable kind in Whichis journaled a shaft12 carrying a roller 13, suchroller having its ends beveled as shown in Fig. 5.
Disposed above-the arm 4 and mounted on the casting 2 in any suitable manner is an arm 14, which may be'braced by a suitable framework if desired, a portion of a brace 15 being shown, which may be fastened in any suitable manner. Mounted in any suitable manner on the outer end of the arm 14 preferably above the housing ll-is ahousing 16 provided with slots 16' in its sides. Loosely disposed but snugly fittingwithin' the housing 16 is a second housing 17 which has a shaft 18, carrying a beveled roller 18', j ournaled in its opposite side walls, theends of such shaft projecting through the slots 16 in the housing 16. Threaded into the topwall of the housing 16 is abolttl9, the smooth .inner end of said bolt loosely p-rojecting through the top wall 'of the inner housing 17 and being held in such position by a flange 2O thereon. Mounted between the inner surface of the top wall of: the housing 16 and the outer surface of the top wall ofthe housing 17 in any suitable manner are compression springs 21 which normally urge the housing17 and the roller 1 toward the roller 13. By adjusting the threaded bolt 19, the clearance between the rollers 18? and 13 may beregulated according to'the thickness of the seam to be operated upon and .the amountof pressure it'is desired to use in pressing such seam.
Theshaft 18 carryingthe roller 18 has mounted at one .end a pinion 22 which meshes with a driving worm 23 mounted onrthe outer end of a driveshaft 24 journaled in brackets 25 mounted on the arm 141, the opposite end of said shaft 24 having a pulley 26'keyedthereon adapted tobe connectedby a suitable means to a power pulley.
length of, the arm is occupied, when by pres sure on the foot treadle the arm 4 will automatically swing outwardly due to the tension exerted by the spring 7 and the pressed uppers disengaged from the arm 4- over the roller 13. The seam of a boot may also be pressed as above described, the arni-lsup-v porting same during the operation. By the employment of my apparatus the seams of shoe uppers or boots may be properly pressed during any stage of the construction thereof economiially and expeditiously.
While i have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A seam presser of the character described comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; and a swinging arm adapted to swing into and snugly en gage said groove and be rigidly supported against vertical movement.
2. In a seam presser of the character described comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; a swinging arm adapted to snugly engage said groove and be rigidly supported against vertical movement; a presserroller carried by said arm; another presser roller mounted adjacent to and cooperating with said first mentioned presser roller; and means for adjusting the pressure exerted by said rollers.
3. In a seam presser of the character de scribed comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; a swinging arm hinged on said base member and snugly engaging said groove and supported against vertical movement; means normally urging said arm to inoperative position; and means for retaining said arm in operative position.
4. In a seam presser of the character de scribed comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; an arm pivoted beyond said groove and adapted to swing thereinto and be supported against vertical movement; a lateral projection on said arm adjacent said. pivot; and a spring connected to said projection and said arm normally urging said arm to inoperative position.
5. In a seam presser of the character described comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; an arm pivoted beyond said groove and adapted to swing thereinto and be supported against vertical movement; a lateral projection on said arm adjacent said pivot; a spring connected to said projection and said arm normally urg ing said arm to inoperative position; a catch for holding said arm in operative position; and means for releasing said catch.
6. In a seam presser of the character described comprising a base member having a laterally opening groove; a swinging arm hinged on said base member and snugly engaging said groove; means normally urging said arm to inoperative position; means for retaining said arm in operative position; a presser roller mounted in the end of said arm; and an adjustable presser roller mounted above said firstnamed presser roller and co-operating therewith.

In a seam presser of the character described comprising a support; telescopic housings mounted on said support; a presser roller'mounted in the inner of said housings; a laterally swinging arm mounted adjacent said support and having a corresponding "presser roller (IO-Operating" Withsaid first-named presser roller; and resilient means engaging said inner'housingfor pressing the roller therein toward the presser roller mounted in said swinging arm.
8. In a seam presser of the character described comprising a support; telescopichousings mounted on said support; a presser roller mounted in the inner of said housings; a base member disposed adjacent said support having a laterally opening groove; a swinging arm carrying a pressing roller adapted to co-operate with said first-named pressing roller, said arm being adapted to. swing into said groove and be. supported thereby; and means engaging said inner housing for resiliently holding said first named roller in position.
9. In a seam presser of the character described comprising a support; telescopic housings mounted on said support; a'shaft mounted in the inner of said housings and siidably mounted in the outer of said housings; a presser roller mounted on said shaft in the inner of said housings; an adjusting screw threaded into said outer housing and having its inner end slidably secured to said inner housing; resilient means mounted between the outer surface of said inner h0us-' ings; a presser roller mounted on said shaft in the inner of said housings; an adjusting screw threaded into said outer housing and having its inner end slidably secured to said inner housing; resilient means mounted be. tween the outer surface of said inner housing and the inner surface of said outer hous ing; a pinion on one end of said shaft; and
driving means engaging said pinion and adapted to remain in operative engagement therewith despite movement of said shaft.
11. A seam presser of the character de scribed comprising a base member having a groove open at one side; and an arm adapted to swing into and snugly engage said groove and be rigidly supported against movement in all directions except toward the open side.
12. A seam presser of the character described comprising a base member having a groove open at one side; an arm adapted to swing into and snugly engage said groove and be rigidly supported against movement in all directions except toward the open side; and removable means for preventing movement of said arm toward said open side.
13. A seam presser of the character described; a base member having a groove open at one side; a supporting member disposed adjacent to said base member and having a presser roller mounted thereon; and an arm having a presser roller thereon adapted to swing into and snugly engage said groove the swinging of said arm into 14. A seam presser of the character de4 scribed; a base member having a groove open at one side; a supporting member disposed adjacent to said base member and having a presser roller mounted thereon; an arm having a presser roller thereon adapted to swing into and snugly engage said groove, the swinging of said arm into said groove causing said presser rollers to assume operative relation with respect to each other; means normally urging said arm out of engagement with said groove; and a spring catch for holding said arm in said- EDWARD D.
