SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,079, dated September 26, 1882, Application filed June 5,1882. (No model.)

. Be it known that I, JEROME HIBBARD, a

citizen of the United States, residing atSouth Butler, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket-Making Machinmarked thereon ,which form a pa rt of this specification.

My invention relates to a machine for making baskets; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangementof parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to produce a convenient and efficient machine to be employed in the manufacture of "diamond and other baskets, and it is shown in the devices and elements illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the table detached to show the position of. the splints. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view of the former, push-off device, and the form; Fig. 4, a back elevation of the push-01f device, and Fig. 5 a side elevation of myinvention with the push-ofi' device removed.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A'represents the base-plate or frame, rigid with which is a vertical standard, B, in the upper portion of which is pivoted a cross-bar, 0, provided with nail-pockets c, and to which is hinged the laying-out table 0, having pins 0 Arranged horizontally and rigid with the standard B is a bar, D, upon which is loosely hung the form E, which is readily removed when it is desired to use one of a different shape or size, and which turns easily upon the shaft D.

Pivoted .to the base A is a lever, H, which carries upon its upper extremity a shaft, I, upon which is loosely hung a former. This former consists essentially of a body, J, having flaring rigid sides J ,which give the former the approximate form of a box with open corners. pedal-leverpr toggle, H, pivoted thereto, and

to a limb, H which in turn is pivoted to the placed upon pins (2 upon the form E. Power then applied to the treadle H forces the lever H and the former toward a vertical position, the pins 6 being received in corresponding apertures in the former. The rigid flaring sides bend the splints composing the basket over the form and permit theweaving in of said splints at the sides and corners.

The form E is of a size and form corresponding with the shape of the basket to be made, and the back edge forms a bearing, E,wl1ereon the basket-band is nailed.

Pivoted at m to the base A is lever M,which is loosely connected to a link, M, pivoted to a crank-lever, M which is pivoted to the standard at m. The opposite end of this lever M connects with a cross-frame, N,which is loosely hung upon the bar D, and which has guidepins N, which work loosely in holes in the form E, and arms N which pass outside the form E and have shoulders n against which the baskets band rests while beingnailed to h, upon the lever H, striking the lever M, forces the frame N outward, the shoulders 42 of the arms N pressing against the basket-band, and the basket in a finished condition is forced off the form. It will be observed that this entire operation is performed by a single pedal-lever, and that the push-otf device is operated automatically.

It will be observed that the push-off device and mechanism for operating the same may be omitted, in which case the arms N are secured to the form, as shown in Fig. 5.

The lever H is operated by means of'a of basket or many particular construction of the devices named. The machine would be equally serviceable in the manufacture of a great many different forms or varieties of haskets.

Modifications in details of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essential features of which are shown and described.

The laying-out table is held in horizontal position by means of a button or other catch,

and when tipped back exposes the nail-pouches, as shown.

Having now described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In a basket-making machine, a former having rigid flaring sides, combined with a form having face pj ns, means, substantially as described, fdr'iorcin g the said former against the form, and means, substantially as described, for automatically forcing the completed basket off the form, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

3. The former E, having pins e, and the frame N, having arms N with shoulders n combined with the former J, and with means for automatically forcing a basket off the form as the former is withdrawn, all substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore shown and set forth.

4. The lever H, having pin h, and the lever M M combined with the frame N, having arms N 72 the spring N the swiveled form E and former, and operating means, all substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore shown and set forth.
