FRANK WILLIAMS, F HOT SPRINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINED PENCIL SHARPENER AND GUARD.
Application'filed July 12, 1921. Serial No. 484,087.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK VVILLiAMs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident ofHot Springs, in the county of Fall River and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pencil Sharpeners and Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stationery and particularly to a pencil sharpener and holder, the said invention having for an object the provision of novel means whereby a sharpener is provided which may consti- 16 tute a guard for the lead after the pencil is sharpened, or it may be employed as a means for retaining a pencil in a pocket to guard against loss of the pencil; and thesaid invention furthermore has for its object the provision of a combined sharpener and guard constructed of a single piece of material having the characteristics and advanta es stated.
% Vith the foregoing and other objects in 7 26 view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a View in elevatlon of a pencil, showing a device embodying the invention app-lied thereto;
Figure 2 illustrates a similar view of the opposite side of the pencil and guard;
Figure 3 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of the device;
Figure 4 illustrates a perspective view of a clamping ring; and
- Figure 5 illustrates a perspective view of the end and a fragment of the said device.
In these drawings 10 denotes a tubular body having a conical or tapered outer end 11. The body is slotted longitudinally from its inner end as at 12 and terminates in an enlarged aperture 13. The purpose of the 65 the said clip bein of resilient material and preferably of slig tly less diameter than the ;the body on the pencil. The body has an annular head 16 near its inner end which constitutes an abutment for the cli to prevent its movement longitudinally of the said j bOdy.
The body is furthermore provided with longitudinally extending serrations or ribs 16 to insure a firm fingerhold when the body is being turned, as is done when a pencil is to be sharpened, as will presently appear.
The tapered or conical end 11 has a longitudinally extending slot 17 which forms a clearance for the escape of the cuttings during the sharpening operation, and the material of the body on one side of the slot is bent inwardly slightly and the edge is beveled or sharpened to produce a cutting blade which operates to sharpen the pencil.
The outer end of the body has'an aperture which is but slightly greater than the aperture of the lead of pencils now in ordinary use, and it is the purpose of the inventor that the lead shall project from the outer end. of the body to expose the lead for use when the pencil is manipulated, although, if desired, the pencil could-be pulled inwardly slightly in order to conceal the lead within the area of the body, a condition which would result-in protecting the lead while it is not in use.
The body at the outer end is further provided with a resilient tongue 18 which spans the slot and overlies a portion of the body on the opposite side of the slot, the said tongue acting to form a guard at the ena part of the pencil, and this finger is offset with relation to the surface of the pencil to form a clearance for the reception of the material forming the garment having a pocket to which the pencil is applied, it being understood that the finger will bear against the outer surface of the material and press it against the pencil with a'clam ping action to prevent dislodgmeiit of the pencil from the pocket. The outer extremity of the finger is curved. inwardly to form a bead 20 to increase the frictional contact between the fin er and the garment.
It has been ound that adevice made in accordance with this invention can be inex- 6 pensively manufactured and that it will prove efficient and satisfactory in the particulars enumerated.
I claim: In a combined pencil sharpener and guard, 10 a body having a cylindrica portion with a means for retainin longitudinally extending slot at the inner end, the said body being tapered toward the outer end and provided with a longitudina-lly extending slot, the edge of the said slot being shaped to form a cutting blade,
a tongue extending from the body on one,
side of the slot and projecting over the said slot at the outer end of the said body, and
the bod on a encil. RANK ILL AMS.
