To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR J. ToREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pencil-PointProtector, Adjustalole Eraser, and Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a tubular attach ment to be applied to a pencil or to a fountain pen and adapted to he slipped on the forward end thereof for protecting the point or to be applied to the rear end when the pencil or pen is in use. More particularly the invention relates to an attachment of the indicated character equipped with an eraser.

An important object of my invention is to provide a protector having an eraser tightly held in the protector to protrude therethrough for erasing and movable longitudinally in response to pressure exerted against the inner end of the eraser to adjust the latter for projecting a new portion thereof as the eraser is worn away.

A further important object of the invention is to provide an eraser constituting a sharpening medium whereby to maintain the pencil lead in sharp condition.

The invention also has for its objects to provide a holding tongue integral with the protector adapted to engage the pocket into which the pencil or pen is placed; to provide a tubular attachment of the indicated character possessing strength and durability and adapted to be firmly retained on pencils Or pens of difierent diameters; and to provide a tubular attachment equipped with a scale thereon.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a protector and eraser embodying my invention showing the same applied to a pencil;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view with parts broken away and others in longitudinal section, illustrating the eraser modified with respect to its sharpening means;

In carrying out my invention a shell or tubular body 10 is provided, the inner end of whlch and preferably for the major portlon of its length is made cylindrical to be slipped onto either end of a pencil A. A holding tongue 11 is formed integral with the casing 10 by slitting the latter longitudinally from its inner end on approximately parallel lines and bending the material. o-utwardlyso that the tongue will be offset as indicated in Fig. 2. whereby the tongue will be adapted to be slipped over a pocket into which the pencil is inserted and by its resiliency to hold the attaclnncnt and pencil to the pocket. In order to strengthen thetubiu lar body 10 and provide a rounded edge at the inner extremity, the material at said inner end is return bent forming a reinforcing band 13 integral with the shell.

The outer end 14: of the tubular body 10 is slightly tapered and within the same there is fitted an eraser 15 of rubber or equivalent material which is tapered approximately to correspond with the taper of the portion 1a. The outer end of the eraser .15 is adapted to protrude but as the eraser wears away it is adapted to be forced outwardly by pressure applied to the inner end thereof. Thus, the adjustability of the eraser enables new portions thereof to be projected for use whereas the ordinary eraser on pencils or pencil attachments is entirely worn away for the available portion by a short period of use. In order to cause the tapered port-ion 1+ of the body to firmly retain the eraser against turningor other movement, the said tapered portion is slitted longitudinally one or more places as at 16 so that the casing may expand as the eraser is adjusted by being forced outwardly and the casing may have longitudinal corrugations (10, Fig. 5. and 10 Fig. 6) on the inner surface presenting alternate ridges and depressions, to prevent turning or other accidental movement of the I provide a sharpening or abrading or reducing means-associated with the eraser for which purpose the latter is formed with a tapering cavity 17 equipped with any cutting, abrading or reducing means 18 hereinafter referred to as a sharpening medium.

In the form shown in Fig. 2 the sharpening medium consists of emery powder or the like applied to the walls of the cavity 17.

In the form shown in Fig. 3 the body 10 with its tapered end 14, slit or slits 16 and ribs when employed, are the same as previously described but the eraser 15 has in the tapered cavity 17 thereof a cutter 18 which is held firmly in place in the resilient eraser. With either form of cutting medium the casing 10 is slipped onto the pencil sufficiently forthe pencil point a, Fig. 2, to be subjected to the action of said cutting medium, or, obviously, the eraser may be removed to be employed either as an eraser or as a sharpener independently of its connection with other parts of the invention, and indeed, the cavity with its sharpening medium may be embodied in erasers other than a tapered eraser forming a part of a pencil or pen attachment.

In the form shown in Fig. '-.l the invention is embodied in the protective tubular cap 10 of a pen A to protect the point or nib a thereof. In this form of the invention the tubular cap 10 is gradually thickened at its outer end to vpresent a tapered interior to receive a tapering eraser 15 and at the same time to provide increased strength at the outer end of the cap to withstand the pressure exerted thereon in forcing the eraser outwardly to present a new portion thereof. The eraser in this case is a sand rubber. If desired, a reinforcing band 10 may be applied to the cap 10.

In practice I provide ameasuring scale longitudinally on the exterior of the shell 10 as clearly shown at 19, Fig. 1, so that the device can constitute a rule. Obviously, when the pencil is in use the attachment is slipped on the rear end of the pencil.

I wish to state in conclusion that although the illustrated examples constitute practical embodiments of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described 'my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the class described, a tubular tapered protector, and a tapered eraser therein adapted to be forced outwardly to present a new projecting portion for use beyond the protector, the said protector presenting interior longitudinal corrugations to accommodate the increasing mass of the eraser presented to the corrugations when the eraser is moved outwardly. 1

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tapered casing having longitudinal depressions and ribs at the interior thereof, of a tapered eraser having a conical recess in the inner end thereof, and a pencil sharpening medium carriedby said eraser in the said recess and in fixed relation to the walls thereof.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tapered casing, of a tapered eraser, having a conical recess in the inner end thereof, and a pencil sharpening medium carried by the eraser in the said recess and in fixed relation to the walls of the recess, the eraser being adjustable with said sharpening medium longitudinally in the casing to present a new projecting portion of the eraser beyond the casing.

a. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing having longitudinal depressions and ribs at the interior thereof, ,of an eraser having a recess in the inner end thereof, and a pencil sharpening medium in the said recess in fixed relation to the walls thereof.
