UNITED. STATES new P T E;
KEY ras'rnnnn.
Application filedlanuary 13, 1922 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOYD H. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in key fasteners and has as its primary object to provide a device which may be readily engaged over the knob shank of any ordinary door lock and coact with the key of the lock in a manner to prevent the key being turned in the look from the outside or being pushed out of the lock for the insertion of a skeleton key.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it cannot become accidentally disengaged from the key after application. thereto and yet may be readily displaced when it becomes necessary to turn the key, and without at the same time requiring its complete removal or disengagement from the knob shank of the lock.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that while its locking element may be readily engaged in the opening of the key handle and disengaged therefrom, it will so seat within the opening as to positively preclude rotation of the key to any appreciable extent.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it may be readily stamped or otherwise formed from a single one-piece strip of metal.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in use;
Figure 2 is a and Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof.
The device embodying the invention comprises a yoke which is indicated in general by the numeral 1, and this yoke includes sides 2 and 3, and a connecting top portion 4 extending between said sides and integral therewith, the latter portion being preferably arched to adapt it to engage over the shank of the door knob as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. Preferably the device is formed from a single integral strip of resilient metal, and the side 2 of the yoke has its lower end portion bent to extend .1n-
front elevation of the device;
wardly at an obtuse angle as indicated by the numeral 5 and thence outwardly substantially at right angles to its portion 5 to pro- Serial no. 525,927.
vide a hp 6, the bend between the portion 5 and lip 6 and indicated by the numeral 7 being somewhat rounded so as to adapt it to ride past the knob shank in the application and removal of the device. The lower portion of the side 3 of the yoke is bent as at 8 to provide a shank 9 which extends inwardly and downwardly at an obtuse angle to the said side 3 and is located opposite the bend 7 in the lower portion of the side 2 of the yoke. By reference to Figure 2 of the drawings it will be observed that the portions 5 and 9 of the yoke provide a restricted throat 10 at the lower end of the yoke which in practice will be somewhat narrower than the diameter of the knob shank over which the yoke is to be applied, so that the device may be snapped over the shank and will not be liable to become accidentally disengaged therefrom and yet may be readily removed whenever required, the resiliency of the metal of which the device is formed permitting the sides of the yoke to spring apart as the bend 7 and shank portion 9 ride past the knob shank.
As the device is formed from a flat strip of metal, the shank 9 is twisted as indicated at 11 so as to dispose the width of the lower portion of the device transversely with re- 35 lation to the plane of the yoke, and below the shank the device is provided with an offset or forwardly and downwardly inclined portion 12 terminating in a vertically depending locking finger 13 occupying a plane parallel to and in advance of the plane occupied by the yoke 1. Due to the inclination of the portion 12, the locking finger 13 is disposed in offset relation to the yoke and is thus positioned to adapt it to be inserted through the opening in the handle of the key to be fastened as clearly shown in Figure 1, this finger or the portion 12 seating in said opening when the device is properly applied to the knob thus preventing rotation of the key as well as its disengagement from the keyhole of the lock. It will be evident that inasmuch as the portion 12 and locking finger 13 are transversely with relation to the disposed yoke, either of these portions, when of the required width, will so nearly fill the opening in the handle of the key as to prevent any appreciable rotation of the said key.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A key fastener comprising a knob shank hank of the lock and 100 engaging yoke having resiliently connected sides formed to provide a restricted throat at the lower end of the yoke, one of said sides being continued downwardly and provided with a depending locking finger rigid with respect thereto and offset With relation to the plane of the said yoke.
2. A key fastener comprisinga knob shank engaging yoke having resiliently connected 1 sides formed to provide a restricted throat at thelo-wer end of the yoke, oneof said sides having an integral rigid downward exten sion provided with a rigid depending lockingfingeroffset with relation to the plane of the said yoke, the other said side being deflected laterally away from the first mentioned side to adapt the yoke to be readily passed over the doorknob shank.
In testimon whereof I afiix my signature.
