CHARLES R. MOORE, OF NEWPORT, VERMONT.
FASTENER FOR STORM VJINDOWS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 6, 1925.
This invention relates to fasteners for storm windows and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable device of this character which can be applied readily to a storm window, a hanging screen, or the like and which can be utilized for holding the window closed tightly or for fastening said window in outwardly extending position for ventilating, cleaning, etc.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will hold the window or screen pressed yieldingly against the main window frame so as to prevent rattling.
Another object is to provide a fastener which, when used for holding the storm window in open position, will be held firmly in place so as not to rattle.
A still further object is to provide a fastener which can be manipulated readily and will not interfere with the installation of ordinary sliding screens or the like and none of the parts of which need be detached from the window or the sash frame when the storm window is taken down at the end of the season.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear. as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the fastener in position for holding a storm window closed, a portion of the sill of the main window frame being broken away.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2.2 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 Figure 2, the position of the storm window when open, being indicated by broken lines. 7
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates the sill of the main window frame B and a hanging frame which can be a storm window, a screen or the like, has been indicated at C. In the structure shown the hanging frame is adapted to be seated against frame B when closed but Serial No. 21,072.
it can be swung to open position as shown by broken lines in Figure 3.
The fastener constituting the present invention includes an eye screw 1 into which is extended an eye 2 formed at one end of a shank 3 preferably resilient and which is formed. at its free end, with a hook l which opens downwardly. The'bill 5 of this hook has an extension which is bent toward the bill. and extended upwardly to provide a wedge shaped portion 6. The upper end of the extension merges into an eye 7 constituting a linger piece which extends over and laterally beyond. the hook 4.
A screw 8 extends upwardly from the sill A of the window and is so positioned that when the storm window C is closed the eye screw 1 will be located close to but at one side thereof. Another screw engages the bottom portion of the storm window 0 and is located where it can be engaged by the hook 4. An eye screw 9 extends outwardly from the sill A where it can be engaged by hook 4 when the storm window is open as hereinafter explained.
It will be noted that the eye 2 at one end of shank 3 is located wholly above the shank. Thus it is possible for this shank to rest upon or be supported very close to the sur face of the sill A when the fastener is in use. Consequently the screw'8 need extend only a short distance above the surface of the sill and still be high enough for proper engagement by the shank.
In using the fastener the frame C is drawn tightly against the frame B after which the shank 3 is swung toward frame 0 and against the screw or stud 8. Said shank is then sprung around this screw or stud until the hook 4 is brought to position above the screw 10 whereupon it will press downwardly into engagement with said screw and back of the head thereof. During the outward and upward springing of the shank while the hook is being applied to the screw 10 the head of screw 8 will prevent shank 3 from slipping out of engagement with said screw 8. The book 4 can be easily forced in or out of engagement with screw 10 by pressing on the finger piece 7. Ohviously while the fastener is thus engaged the shank is held under tension and the various parts will be prevented from rattling.
lVhen it is desired to open the hanging window or screen the fastener is disengaged from screw or stud 10 and the frame C is swung outwardly until the bill 5 of hook. 4: can be inserted downwardly into the eye 9. The upwardly diverging portion of the bill cooperates with said bill to form a resilient wedge which will bind tightly into'the eye 0 and hold the fastener securely in place and against rattling.
The fastener herein described is cheap. to manufacture, can be applied readily and is easily manipulated.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with a window frame having a projection thereon, of a frame mounted'to swing against and away from the window frame, a resilient shank movably connected to the swinging frame, a projeeti-ng member on the swinging frame, said resilient shank being movable into engagement with the projecting members on the window frame and the swinging frame to hold the swinging frame yieldingly in closed position, means upon the window frame for engagement by the shank to hold the swinging frame in open position, said means including an eye, and a compressible bill upon the shank insertable into and adapted to wedge within the eye.
2. The combination with a window frame having a projecting member thereon, of a frame mounted to swing against and away from the window frame, an eye extending from the sill, an eye projecting from the swinging frame, a resilient shank movably connected to the eye on the frame, a hook at one end of said shank, said shank adapted to spring about the projecting member on the window frame. during the application of the hook to. fastening position, a headed member: on the. swinging frame, for engagement by the hook when in holding position,
an extension on the hill of the hook cooperating therewithto yieldingly wedge into the eye on thesill when the hanging frame is in open position and a finger piece integral with said extension and overhanging and extending laterally from the hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own; I have hereto affixed my signature.
CHARLES R; MOORE.
