Be it known that I, GATO HAARBERG, a citiZen of the United States, and a resident of Trondhjem, Norway, have invented a new and Improved Portable Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in portable handles, an object of the invention being to provide a handle, which can be used to quickly and conveniently engage the wall of a box, crate, or other container or similar article, so that the handle, when grasped by the operator, may be utilized to lift or otherwise manipulate the article with which it is in engagement.

A further object is to provide a portable handle, which will engage opposite sides of a boX or other article and operate to embed spurs in the faces of the article to prevent slipping of the handle, said engagement of the spurs with the article being controlled by the weight of the article, so that the handle can be used to lift or manipulate the article without danger of slipping and without materially disfiguring the article.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations. and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

My improved device comprises a fork l having a relatively straight or flat intermediate portion 2 and provided with a hand grip 3, preferably secured between the arms of the fork by means of a bolt t and nut said bolt projected through the arms and through the handhold.

In other words, the arm 6 extends upwardly from the intermediate portion the desired distance and then curves upwardly and then downwardly away from the fork, and then extends downwardly a distance apprecably Serial No. 487,787.

below the plane of the fork l and is provided at its lower end with a spur 7. Similar spurs 7 are secured to the relatively flat or straight intermediate portion 2 of the fork l at opposite sides of the arm G, and these spurs preferably have a slight upward curvature and are adapted to engage opposite sides of the wall 8 of a box or other article with which the handle is in engagement. The spurs 7 are preferably removably connected to their supporting members and with this end in view.` are provided with Shanks 9 which are projected through their supporting members, and nuts 10 are screwed' onto the threaded ends of the Shanks to hold the spurs in place, yet permit their removal and replacement, as occasion may require.

lit is to be understood that the extremity of the arm 6 is spaced from the fork l a distance sufficient to accommodate the wall 8 of a box or other article between said eirtremity of the arm and the fork, so that the handle can be conveniently placed in position over said wall and when an upward pull is had on the grip or handheld 3 the spurs of the arm 6 and fork l will be caused to engage and embed, or partially embed themselves in the wall, and hence. the handle can be used as a lifting or manipulating means for the box or other article with which it is in engagement.

W'hen it is desired to release the handle from the box, it is simply necessary to give the grip or handheld f3 a downward pres` sure, which will. force the spurs 7 out of the box and the handle can be detached.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence l do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

As a new article of manufacture, a portable handle consisting of a for?, having straight intermediate portion, and a handhold secured to the ends of the fork, a pair of spurs on the intermediate portion of the fork, a gooseneck arm fixed to the upper face of the intermediate portion of the fork at the center thereof, and a spur on the arm.
