Application filed November I 0 all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that'I, WILLIAM B. MAR- SHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Lauderdale, in the county of Broward and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rapid Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
Experience has demonstrated the desira- 'bility of means for rapidly heating a small quantity of water or other liquid for various purposes. Therefore, the object of my present invention is the provision of a rapid boiler, i. e., a device adapted to be pushed into a fire as to hold water or other liquid in close proximity to the fire so as to assure the quick heating or boiling of the water. The invention also contemplates the provision of a device susceptible of being arranged in standing position on a floor, and one which when not in use may be hung up out of the way.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a view illustrative of the manner in which my novel boiler is positioned on a hearth, floor or other support; said view also showing by dotted lines the arrangement of the legs when the boiler is to be pressed into an open grate, a stove or other fire holder. The legs are also arranged in said dotted line position when the device is to be hung upon a nail or other support.

dicated by 2, and it is designed to be normally closed through the medium of a hinged lid 3. Appropriately fi-Xed at 4 to the holder 1 is a handle 5 which is also preferably of metal and is provided adjacent to its upper end with an aperture 6 so that it can be conveniently hung on a nail or hook. The lower portion of the said handle 5 is arranged in lapped relation to the upper portion of the holder '1, and practically throughout its length the h'andle'5 is of channel vform in cross section, i. e., as a major portion 7 and rearwardly extending side flanges 8. At their upper ends the side flanges S are provided. with retaining lips 9, inwardly. directed and adapted to serve an important purpose hereinafter set forth.
At an intermediate point in, the length of the handle 5 the flanges 8 are providedwith enlargements 10, Figures 1, 2 and 4, and between the said enlargementsis a transverse pin 11 on which is mounted an anti-friction roller 12, Figure 4. The said enlargements 1.0 are characterized by arcuate edges 12, and. between the enlargements 10 is an arcuate plate 13, the edges of which are slightly flared as indicated by 14 in F ig ure 2 so as to afford slots 15 between the said :edges 14 and the edges 12 which latter may also be flared as in Figure 2 when deemed expedient. The ends of the plate '13 are connected at 16 to the major port tion 7 of the handle 5, and it will-be readily noted that the said plate 18 in combination with the enlargements l0 and the major portion of the handle 5 constitutes a housing. It will also be noted by particular reference to Figure 2 that the plate 13 is provided adjacent to its lowci end with edge shoulders 17. Figures 2 and 8. The legs of my novel device are designated by 18 and best shown in Figures 1, 2 and 7. The said legs 18 are possessed of resiliency and are provided at their inner ends with spring coils 19, Figures 4t and 7, which are merged into a loop 20.
When my novel device is to be stood on a hearth or other support, the legs 18 are locked in working position as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the said legs being at that time in engagement with the shoulders 17 of the plate 13. When it is desired to shift the legs 18 from the position shown in full lines in Figures 1 and 2 to the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 1, it is simply necessary for the operator to press the legs 18 outwardly and out of engagement with the shoulders 17, and then swing the legs upwardly through the slots 15. It will also be noticed that as the legs 18 approach the dotted line position in Figure 1 they may be snapped into engagement with the lips 9, so as to be securely retainedin idle position. With the legs 18 in the idle position the holder 1 may be conveniently thrust into a fire and conveniently removed therefrom, and it will also be noted that it is desirable to secure the legs in the idle position when the device is to be hung on a nail or the like. For the shifting of the legs 18 from the idle position to the working position, shown by dotted lines and full lines, respec tively, in Figure 1, it is simply necessary for the operator to disengage the legs from the lips 9 and then swing the legs through the slots and into engagement with the shoulders 17 when the legs will be securely locked as shown in Figures 2 anl 8 so as to safely maintain the holder 1. in the upright position shown in Figures 1 and 2.
In the hinging of the lid 3 to the handle 5, I prefer to form the hinge members integral'with the lid 3 and the major portion of the handle 5, respectively, and to connect the said members through the medium of a pintle 22, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
When the legs 18 are swung upwardly precedent to being put into engagement with the lips 9, it will be manifest that the loop 20 will bind against the upper portion of the arcuate plate 13, and will thereby put the legs 18 under tension so that when sprung into engagement with the lips 9, the said legs will be held against casual release.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple device possessed of a wide range of utility and have constructed the said device in such manner that it is susceptible of ready adjustment, and well adapted to withstand the rough eeeeee usage to which fire implements are ordinarily subjected.
Having described my invention, what I plaim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
1. A water heating device comprising a water holder tapered toward one end, a handle fixed to the opposite portion of the holder, and legs hingedly connected with the handle and arranged to be swung toward and away from the upper portion of the handle, the handle being provided with means to engage and retain the legsin their lower working position.
2. A water heating device comprising handle, a water holder connected with the handle and tapered toward its end remote from the handle, and supporting means to maintain the water holder in upright position on its reduced end, said supporting means bein connectedv with and adjustable relatively to the handle.
3. A water heating device comprising a water holder tapered toward one end, a handle fixed to the opposite portion of the water holder, said handle having side flanges and also having retaining lips on the side flanges at the upper ends thereof, resilient legs hingedly connected to the handle, and means on the handleto detachably retain said legs in their lower working position, the legs adapted when released and swung upwardly to be snapped into engagement with the said retaining lips.
4. A water heating device comprising a water holder tapered toward one end, a handle fixed to said water holder and having side flanges and also having retaining lips at the upper ends of the side flanges and enlargen'ients on the lower portions of said flanges, an arcuate plate connected to the handle and spaced from the edges of the said enlargements to form slots, and having shoulders at its sides adjacent to its lower end, a pin carried by said enlargements of the flanges, resilient legs movable in the said slots and into and out of engagement with the said lips and the said shoulders, a loop, and coils adjoining the inner ends of the legs and the ends of the loop and disposed about said pin, said loop adapted on the upward movement of the legs to bind against the upper portion ofthe arcuate plate and thereby put the legsunder tension.
