Bel it known that I, Hnnnr D. HILDE- innxNn, .residing at Mount Vernon', in the county ot Knox and State oi Ohio, a citizen ot the United States,lhave invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in '"ialves'ot' which improvements `the 4following is specification.- i
'ln Lettersfiatent No. 1,229,456, granted June 12, 19t?, descrilicd and shown a construction ot` valve mechanism having in combination oppositely disposed valve seats having ports therethrough and valves consisting ot resilient metal strips which were so supported by abutments in operative relation to the ports that the strips could be bent or :tlexed` by the pressure of fluid to permit of escape ot' fluid through the ports. In one ot the constructions shown in said patent, the supporting abutments were arranged adjacent to the ends of the strip and the openingiiexure of the spring was intermediate suchl abutments. In another torni the supporting abutment is arranged to bear against they strips at points approximately midway their lengths `so that the opening ot' the valve is due to the iieXure of the strip on opposite sides of the abutinents.
The invention described and claimed herein has for its objecta construction oi valve mechanism, in which the valves are maintained in normal or closed position by a suitably constructed and arranged resilient means, and the opening of the port is effected by substantially equal movement 01"' the strip `for its entire lengthr against such pressure or by such equal movement and more or less tlexure ot the strip forming the valve. The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the construction shown in Fig. i `the springs are arranged to bear at `their ends in the strips and against one another at a point intermediate the ends while Fig. 8 shows a reversed arrangement ot the springs, the springs being in contact with the valve at points intermediate their while the latter are in contact. It is characteristic of the construction shown herein that the resilient means interposed between the valve strips is operative on both valves. This` characteristic is found in the form shown in Fig. i and Fig. S, for although neither springis in direct engagement with both valves, the springs ha-vetheir ends .or points intermediate the ends in Contact so that each valve is controlled by both springs.
I claim herein as my invention: 1.,A valve mechanism for pumps, etc., having in combination two ,oppositely disposed valve seats having ports therethrough, flat strips of suitable material for closing the ports, both side edges of said strips being free to move substantially equal distanees from the seats and a spring 'tor yieldingly holding said strips against the valve seats.
2. Av valve mechanism'for pumps, etc., having in combination two oppositely disposed valve seats having ports therethrough, metal strips for closing said, ports, the side edges oi' said strips being free to move substantially equal distances :trom the seats and resilient means interposed between the valve strips for yieldingly holding said valves against the seats. i
3. A valve mechanism for pumps, etc.. having in combination two oppositely disposed valve seats having ports therethrough, metal valve strips for closing said ports, both side edges of said strips being free to move substantially equal distances from the seats and a spring adapted to bear against both strips for yieldingly holding the same against the respective seats.
