RENEWABLE CHECK-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,962, dated March 24;, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAY II. EASTER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Hazlewood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewable Check-Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to renewable checkvalves for pumps, and has for its object the production of a very simple and efficient valve that can be readily removed when it is so desired. This invention is especially adapted to be used on what are known as coal-barge pumps, but it is adaptable for other pumps as well. Valves at present in use on pumps of the class mentioned quickly wear out, and owing to the construction of the pump, or, rather, of the valve-casing and valve, it is impossible to remove the old valve and replace it by a new one without taking the pump all apart, thereby causing great expense, time and trouble. To remedy this serious objection and to provide a more efficient valve are the objects of my invention.
With these ends in view my invention consists, in general terms, of a valve-casing, two walls of which are utilized for part of the valve-seat, removable pins or keys adapted to pass through the valve-casing and act as part of the valve-seat, a central cross-piece which also helps to make up the valvesea-t, the valve, and a central cross-rod terminating at each end in depending arms substantially at right angles to said cross-rod, the valve beingheld in position within the casing by means of the central cross-piece and the said rod, all as more fully hereinafter described and particularly claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, Fig. 2 a central vertical section, Fig. 3 a bottom plan view partly in section, Fig. 4 a central section taken at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a detail, of valve.
Referring to the drawings, the valve-casing is made up of four walls a d and b I), two each of these walls being similarthat is to say, walls (L and a are each provided with two holes 0, which when the casing is put together come directly opposite each other. Each of the walls (L and a is provided on its inner side with a projecting ledge (I, which ledge forms part of the valve-seat. Each ledge has a cutout portion 6, adjacent to and on a line with the holes a. The walls I) and b of the casing each have a cut-away part f and each a track g, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
h is a central cross-piece extending entirely across the casing and passing through the cut-away portion f of the walls I) and b. The piece h is provided with cut-away portions to fit snugly to the walls 1) and b. On both ends, outside the walls, the piece h is provided with holes 2, said holes passing entirely through the ends of the piece h.
j are two removable pins or keys which are adapted to pass through the apertures c of the Walls a and o. of the casing and be held in place in the casing by the walls I) and h, the cross-piece l2, and partly by the walls a and a.
7c is a valve preferably made of a backing of leather having two separate wooden blocks securely attach ed thereto by riveting or other suitable means.
Z is an iron rod passing centrally through the casing and parallel to the cross-piece h. The rod Z is provided at each end with a downwardly-projecting arm m. The arms m are screw threaded and are adapted to pass through the apertures i of the piece it.
n are nuts on the ends of the arms m.
The flexible central part of the valve it be ing held stationary between the rod Z and cross-piece 72 the side portions or parts having the blocks of wood thereon are permitted by this construction to rise and fall in response to the action of the pump-piston and thus perform the necessary opening and closing functions of the valve.
By this construction it will be seen that the valve-seat consists of the removable pins or keys j, the ledge d of the walls a and a, and the central cross-piece 72'. hen it is desired to take out an old valve, the keys 3' are removed by sliding them out through the holes a of the walls a, and a, the keys traveling along the track 9 in the walls I? and b. After the keys are removed the cross-piece h, together with the rod Z and the valve, are lifted from the casing. The nuts n on the arms on are removed and the rod Z, with its depending arms on, freed from the piece h. This frees the valve. A new valve may then be placed in position on the piece h, the rod Z placed over it, the arms of the rod passing down through the holes 1', the nuts are placed on the arms on, and the valve is securely held as before. It isthen placed within the casing and the keys put back, thus securely locking the valve within the casing.
I have not deemed it necessary to show my invention applied to any particular style of pump, as the pump forms no part thereof, and as the valve may be used on almost any form of pump.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a casing, a valve within said casing, a removable piece to which said valve is pivoted, and keys for looking said removable piece in position in said casing, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the casing, a valve located centrally within the casing, means for holding the valve in position, removable pins or keys passing through the casing and inclosed thereby, the valve-seat formed by a central cross-piece, the removable pins or keys and the ledges on the inside of the easing, all substantially as set forth.
In a valve of the class described,the fourwalled casing, two of the walls of said casing each provided with an aperture and a ledge, each of the other two walls provided with cut-away portions removable pins or keys adapted to enter the casing and be held therein by said walls, a central cross-piece, h, rod, Z, valve, k, said valve held between piece, it, and rod, Z, and adapted for lateral movement, said crosspiece, ledge and keys forming the valve-seat, substantially as described.
