PLIERS.
Application filed January 15, 1,921.Y Serial No. 437,382. i
To alla/17mm 'it' may concern.' l
g Be it Vknown that l, WILLIAM H. S. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahogaand State of Ghio, have invented a certain new and useful' `improvement ina. top plan view and Fig. 4- is a front eleva-v tion.
Carpenters or other persons making .or`
working with wooden articles or articles of analogous material are frequently under the necessity of extracting nails, particularly short wire vnails or brads which are .too small to be operated upon by the usual claws of a hammer and for this purpose carpenters pliers are used which are provided with `jaws that may be manipulated to bite the nail and further manipulated to extract the nai.
The pliers which form the subject matter of the present invention are for a similar purpose but are so formed as t0 permit access ofl the head of the pliers to positions and the use of the pliers under conditions where the usual forms of pliers cannot get close enough to the nail t-o grip it, as for instance where the nail to be removed is close to an upstanding board or in the corner. r In the present instance the pliers are formed by two pivoted members, these mem bers having hand gripping portions l and 2 and provided with cheek portions 3 and 4+. which are in engagement and are secured inpengagement with each other by means of a pin 5. Each 0f the grippingA portions 2 and 3 are provided with a head, the head for the member l being indicated at 6 and the head for the member llbeing indicated at 7. The head members 6 and 7 are in alignment and the parts are so assembled that when the grip portions l and 2 are brought together, the head portions likewise movel toward each other and into engagement. e
The head member 6 hasv a straight'top portion 6a anda short rightl angle portion 6b which terminates in jaws/such as indicated at 6c, there beings-two jaws c'which are separated by a space. The head member" 7 has 'A a long arm 7a which'terminates lin two Vjaws 1b, these jaws cooperatingwith the jaws 6C.
. The arm 7 is roundedat the portion indicatedy at 7c as clearly indicated in the drawing.
of a nail whiohis near an upstanding board, or in other words near. a corner, the 'surface 6L may be moved up againstthe board and still leave room enough for the fingers to get behind the gripping member l. n i
When the jaws ofthe pliers are 'closed upon a nail, the pliers are used as a lever', the. arm 7a with its curved portion 7care Fhe plane of the top surface 6"a of the jaw i 6 is slightly above the grip member 1 so that in manipulating the pliers to get hold l rocked upon the surface at which the nail is positioned, thus effecting a lever move-v nient whichv will make the removal of the nail much easier than a direct pull.
The
double gripping ridges o n each jaw, afford two vpoints of contact with a nail which makes tliebiting action more certain and lessens the danger of cutting the nail in two. y v vided with extensions 6d and 7d.
the 'nail lies too flush to the board in which it is driven to be grasped by the jaws 6, or
The jaw members 6 and 7b are pro-f j y These extensions permitJ the nail to bev gripped where board andit is desired to extract it, the
wood may be removed in the proximity of the head of the nail and start it and extract the nail.v
The particular advantage of the pliers constructed as herein described lies in the fact that by having the head 6 with aA flat plane side and having the jaw of the head i i long side 7, gives a muchmore effective leverage on the nail vthan caribe obtained with pliers of usual construction.
Having described my invention, I claim Additionally, by having the jaw 7 with its l. Pliers comprising a pair of crossed pivotedhandle portions and'oppositely dis.-
posed heads, one of said heads being straight v with a short jaw member, the lother head 90 lwhere a nail has been driven flush with the'` i being curved and having a long jaw member. the said jaw members terminating in directly,7 opposed gripping portions.
2. Pliers comprising a pair of crossed piroted handle port-ions and oppositelj; disposed heads, one oi' said heads being straight with a short jaw member, the other head being curved and haring a long an' member, each of said jaw members being provided at its end portion with a plurality ot parallel.A
gripping portions, the gripping portions on each jaw being spaced apart and the gripping portions o one jaw being directly` opposed to those ot the other jaw.
3. Pliers Comprising a lair of crossed piroted handle portions and oppositely disposed heads, one of said heads being straight With a short janY n'iember, the other head being curved and having a long jaw niember, each of saidjaw members terminating in gripping portions7 the said gripping portions extending laterally on both sides ott each the jaws. s
l. Pliers comprising a pair ot crossed pivoted handle portions -and oppositely disposed heads7 one of said heads being straight with a short Jaw member, the other head being curved and having a long jan' member, f
traight outer edge surface, the piane of said surface extended, being' outside off the handle portion which is associated with the other head ot the pliers when the pliers are 1n gripping positiom the said head being pron vided with an inwardly extending jan member, the other head being curved and haring a long aw member, said jaw members har-k ing cooperating directly opposed f gripping portions.
ln testimony whereof, l hereunto affix my signature.
