Description
I. LORENTZEN.-
NAIL FULLER.
APPLICA'HON FILED MAR. 21. 1-921.
PATENT IVER LORENTZEN, OF CLEAR LAKE. SOUTH DAKOTA.
NAIL-FULLER.
Application filed March 21, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVER LoREN'rznN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Clear Lake, in the county of Deuel and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to nail pullers, and particularly to that class of nail pullers wherein the head of the nail is clamped between two heads and the closed heads rocked to withdraw the nail.
The general object of my invention is to provide a very effective device of this character having jaws which may be driven into the wood on each side of a nail by the application of a hammer to the head of the implement and these jaws then closed, one of the jaws being formed to provide a rounded or cam-like surface acting to cause the implement to withdraw the nail upon the rocking of the implement.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with coacting wire cutting blades or members.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of my device showing the jaws closed;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation showing teh jaws open and in applied position for being forced into gripping engagement with a nail;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the head 10 and its jaw;
' Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head 11 and its jaw.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that this implement comprises two heads 10 and 11. The head 11 is recessed upon one face, as at 12, the rear wall of this recess being concavely curved, as at 13. Attached to this head 11 is the handle 14. The head 10 is also recessed upon one face. as at 15, to confront the recessed face 12 of the head 11 and the rear edge of the head is curved to conform to the curvature 13 of the rear wall. This head is provided with the handle shank 16. These heads 10 and 11 are pivoted to each other for rotation around a common axis by means of the pivot pin or stud 17 The head- 10 is formed with the outwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

projecting jaw 18 whose inner face is concavely curved, as at 19, to form a tooth 20, and the head 11 is correspondingly formed with an outwardly projecting jaw 21 whose face confronting the jaw 18 is concavely curved to form the biting or cutting tooth 22. Thus when these jaws are forced together a space is left between the concavely curved confronting faces of the jaws. These j aws, it will be seen, are of the full width of the implement.
At the base of the curved face 19 the head 10 is formed with a square recess and the head 11 with a square recess 24:. When the jaws are opened to a certain point, these recesses are in register with each other but when the jaws are closed by forcing the handles 14 and 16 toward each other, the recesses 23 andv 24 will be out of alinement. These recesses, therefore, may be used for cutting wire in an obvious manner, the wire being disposed through these recesses when the jaws are opened and then the jaws closed to cut the wire. The head 11 is formed opposite its jaw 21 with a flat face 2 In the use of this device as a nail puller, the jaws are opened and disposed on each side of a nail, as illustrated in the drawing, and then the hammer is applied to the face 25 to drive the jaws into the wood on each side of the nail. lVhen the toothed ends of the jaws have been driven a sufficient. distance under the wood, the jaws are closed on the nail and then the device is rocked, as upon the curved face 26 of head 10, thus acting to pull the nail out of the wood. This device will not only pull nails having heads but may be also used to offectively pull nails whose heads have been broken off. It may be also used as a staple puller and as a wrench and is especially useful in removing nails from boards nailed in an upright position. It will be obvious that the device may be made of various sizes and that it has a large range of usefulness.
I claim An implement of the character described comprising two heads recessed upon their confronting faces and having handles, the heads being pivoted to each other for rotation around a common axis, both of said heads having integral outwardly projectin confronting jaws, the confronting faces of the jaws being concavely curved, the eX- tremities of the jaws being thereby formed with confronting biting teeth, one of said heads being thickened at its rear end immediately above the pivotal axis of the heads and formed with a flat face whereby a hammermay be applied to the implement, the
wall of the recess in the head having the thickened portion resting at all times upon the periphery of the other head. 10
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
IVER LORENTZEN.
