To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Honaon J. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at l Vatervliet, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Shade Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my present invention is the provision of an improved window shade supporter embodying such a construction that the shade-roller brackets may be adjustably and safely fixed at various distances from the top of a window casing according to the amount of space for the passage of air that it is desired to allow for ventilating purposes between the shade roller and the top of the window casing.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window equipped with my improvement.

Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken through one of the upright bars of the shade supporter and illustrating the manner in which the shade bracket is interlocked with and supported by said bar.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

The window casing l, and the shade roller 2 may be and preferably are of the ordinary well known construction.

My improvement comprises two upright bars 3 and shade brackets 4, one to each bar 3. The bars 3 are identical in construction, and therefore a detailed description of the one shown in Fig. 3 will sufiice to impart a definite understanding of both. Said bar 3 is preferably formed of metal, and comprises upper and lower portions 5 and 6 in which are apertures 7 for the passage of attaching screws, and a body portion 8, flanged at 8 and 8", and having spaced transverse portions 9, the said transverse Specification of Letters Patent.

portions 9 separated by slots or openings 9. The portions 5 of the bars 3 are affixed to the inner sides of the upper portions of the side stiles of the casing 1. It is preferred in practice to make each of the bars 3 in one piece of metal, but they may be made of any other 'material compatible with their purpose without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention.

Each of the shade brackets 4 comprises a body and an arm 10, preferably integral with the body and adapted to receive either the trunnion or the spring shaft section at the adjacent end of the shade roller 2. The body of each bracket 4: is preferably of sheet-metal and is bent into loop form so as to afford a resilient tongue 11. The body of the bracket is extended below the arm 10 so as to form a pendent resilient tongue 12.

In the practical use of the improvement each bracket is made to straddle one of the transverse portions 9 of its respective bar 3, so that the tongue 12 will rest at the inner side of the next lower transverse portion 9, and so that the tongue 11 will yieldingly bear against and be frictionally engaged with the inner side of the body of the bar 3. This relative arrangement will tend to prevent casual upward movement of the bracket, and it will also be noticed that the straddling of the bracket over one transverse portion 9 and the arrangement of the tongue 12 at the inner side of the next lower transverse portion 9 may be depended upon to effectively prevent accidental lateral disconnection of the bracket from its bar. When, however, it is desired to disconnect a bracket 1 from its bar 3, the same may be readily accomplished by simply moving the bracket upwardly relatively to the bar and so as to disengage the looped portion of the bracket from one transverse portion 9 and the tongue 12 of the bracket from a lower transverse portion 9.

It will be manifest from the foregoing that by reason of each of the bars 3 having a considerable number of transverse portions 9, the brackets 4 may be locked at various distances below the top of the window casing according to the space it is desired to have between the shade roller and the top of the casing.
